As some of you may know , I have had a bit of a shabby time over the last month . the Non-test fiasco of the car and then my Aunty passing away the next day ........ so I was glad to get October out of the way . November seemed to be perking up a bit and things seemed to be going my way . That is until today . I decided to visit Argos in Colwyn Bay to buy something . The shopping centre where it is based has automatic barriers , the kind where you press a button , it spits out a ticket and the barrier raises .

So I approach barrier , press the button , ticket ejects and I grab it , let clutch out and proceed onwards and BARRIER SLAMS DOWN ON ME and snaps my right hand Mirror off . I almost toppled the bike and I am almost incandescant with rage . I park the bike up , whisk my mirror off the floor and go in search of somebody slightly or vaguely responsible . I cannot find the office so I espy a young fellow with a high vis waistcoat on and ask him where I can go and enquire as to the nature of this faulty barrier . He takes one look at the mirror and says "What bike you got mate" ..... usual reply of SV and he replies "Nice , I`m a biker myself , I`ll take you to the manned office" .

So off we toddle . I tell him what has happened and he is grimacing and being non-commital but basically says the barriers are a liability . We approach a door and he knocks ..... no answer . I mention that the door is open and he points at a "No Access to Unauthorised Personnel" sign and says "but if somebody was to open the door themselves and go in then there is nothing they can really do ?" .... I take this as a good nod and thank him and knock on the door and open it and shout "Hello" . ........ not a sound in reply and now I am starting to get the Bollock-Ache with it all . I open the door and walk into CCTV central that is manned by 1 fellow . I hold my mirror up and say "you C*nts owe me a mirror" .

His face went a lovely shade of "Deathly White" and he rewound the footage from the digital system and as sure as eggs are oval you see it happen . In a mere second I take the ticket , let clutch out , barrier slams down right onto the bike hard enough to compress the front suspension and send the mirror towards the deck . I am happy they have this and he saves it . I get details of his superior and he takes my details . I also go about my business and order a new mirror . I am going to try and get this footage if I can as part of the deal .... otherwise I may go to press with it and also the H+S executive as some poor sod may end up worse .

Barstewards, again.

A split second further through the barrier could have hit you, then the 'where there's blame there's a claim' boys get involved.

Without a doubt , it would have hit me right in the chest and had me off if I had been quicker but I sincerely boubt I could have actually got through that quick .

Must be the same barrier system as at the Barcelo Las Margaritas that crashed down on my head earlier this year as I walked under it (No I did not put any barrier cream on my bruised noggin). Barriers are a liability, people like Davepreston drive them and do things to relieve the boredom.

Hope you get things sorted.

From what I understand due to the DPA you are entitled to this footage, however there may be a finding charge of around £10 and a 28 day wait. Request it in writing now.

Good work on keeping the bike upright if that barrier was enough to snap the mirror then that must have been some force. However I thought you were just supposed to ride round car park barriers, well thats what I do...

I so wouldn't go near them on a bike either, i have just assumed the sensors are geared towards cars. Hell theres videos of them hitting cars.

The sensor is about 2 foot past the barrier to allow the back of a car to get some clearance before it comes down , Squirrel ... I am interested in this DPA thingy , what`s the deal with it all ?
