This happened on Monday night.
My Dad left work at 10pm and popped into Tescos to get some things. He left the store and got in his car. As he pulled out of the parking spot a man jumped in the passenger side holding a knife and told him to drive. My dad attempted to talk the man out whilst crawling along the car park the man seemed agitated so my dad pulled some money out of his pocket, the man took the money and got out and walked away.
My dad got out of his car and ran back to the store where some police were dealing with a drunk. They called for more police and took some details, they sent a car to drive around the industrial estate close by. At first they said they would have to impound his car for forensics but after the police had been chatting amongst themselves they came back with. " We've got a problem" They then went on to say even if we did find the man and IF it went to court it would probably fall through as as far as they are concerned he 'gave a man a lift then gave him some money'!
They gave him no crime number, nothing a sent him on his way!
He spoke to the store and asked about the CCTV footage and they said that IF they ask for it they give it to them but they haven't!
So basically my dad was mugged at knifepoint and nothing is going to happen!!!
Am I missing something, was that not a serious crime? I bet the bloke who'd stubbled around Tescos got off worse!!
At the end of it I suppose he's still here, and doesn't need more stress with an un-healthy high blood pressure, just frustrating the way the law works. People have to many rights sometimes!!

That's a dangerous thing to ask for on here mate. Somebody will say it's your Dad's own fault.
This country is a farce, that is my only comment.
That and write to the chief constable by email, copying your MP. Google will give you the addresses.
Hope your Dad's OK and not too shaken up.

Well the police are under a lot of pressure to produce good crime figures and clear up rates so nicking the drunk is good cos they got themselves as witnesses and a body in the cells, but recording a violent mugging is bad cos it goes down as a serious crime with no one nicked for it.
Maybe a case of "If you cant catch real criminals, make criminals out of those you can catch"
Its not just the Police. All the public sector are under pressure to "perform" and it matters not a jot if they actually do right or wrong as long as the figures look good.
Cynical?Me?No!

Your poor dad! Bet he'll be locking the car doors as soon as he gets in for a while now...
Could it have been possible the bloke was trying to get away from the police and saw your dad's car as an escape route?
Whereabouts was this?

In reality he was a junkie who needed cash sharpish, it sucks dude and you're right to be pi55ed off.
I would defo take it further, as ralph said, start with the local top man, then the papers if needed.
It is aggravated theft surely, or going equipped to steal, carrying a knife, the list goes on and on.

The highlighted text suggested to me that he needed to get out the place and was annoyed watsontrio's dad wasn't doing it quick enough, he didn't demand the cash upfront....just a thought anyway, doesn't help you to nail the bugger unless the drunk people knew him :-(

Sorry to hear what happened and hope your dad recovers quickly from the shock.
If only we were allowed for situations like this to do it crocodile dundee style "that's not a knife, this is a knife" but we all know in this country the victim will normally end up getting into trouble.

Sorry to here that it has happened to ur old man
Totally crazy, seeing if they catch the **** he'll get a minor offence because he's an addict. Joe public defending his/herself would get:
Possession of a offensive weapon
GBH- even though self defence
And 4 year in the nick
your poor dad. things like this make me mad. your dad done the right thing and at the end of the day come away with no scars apart from the mental aspect. things could have been a lot worse. i'm disgusted at the police response to what has happened but it seems to be a typical response form a few officers these days. they know that even if they had caught the bloke in the car with your dad he would be out on the street the next again day. the person your dad encountered are the ones that are taking the great out of britain.

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope your dad is ok.
My advice would be go the local police ask to speak with the duty inspector as you want to make a compliant, explain what happened but don't get angry. Do you any information about the officers that were there name, shoulder no? It shouldn't matter long as you know the time and location they should be able to find out what officers were there.
When they ask you how you want this dealt with don't go for a local investigation as it will be someone at that station that does it, ask for to investigated by professional standards. Do see your MP, your local council as the police get funding from them. That should do as a starting point.
Let us know, how that works out.

Cheers for the replies, will pass on about contacting local plod direct. He didin't get anything from police, sure he said that CID were there aswell?
Main thing is he's ok, shook up but ok. Could have ended much worse!

Exactly what I said. That or I said I'd do the Vinnie jones from Lock stock and planted the throttle and rammed a car, airbags are great when buckled in but deadly when un-buckled!](*,)
