if i get anything to do with cards/paypal/banks ect ect that looks fishy via email i always look at the email domain as it normally just doesn't look right or is spelt incorrectly.
just out of interest what was the email domain ?

mental - it never ceases to amaze me how people still end up giving their details out when they keep getting warned about this thing.

I just never give any details to links, if things need updating, i go to the site itself and never through links.
Police will only be interested if theres coffee and donuts in it for them

I am a Nigerian General with $35,000,000 which I need to be a secure location.

Your fee would be 10% of this value. If you message me your account and sort code and I will take care of the rest.

Jeremy Clarkson thought the same when he published his details in a column but mysteriously made a donation to charity ;)

never click through a link.. if its not asking for card details it might just give a nasty virus, even if i get .org or facebook notifications in my email, i just wait till im on the site, never click through, just my honest opinion

Paypal, banks etc always state that they will never ask for your login details once you have signed up. I've seen some of these fake emails, they look very authentic, but I always junk them straight away. Had one from Barclays Bank the other day saying that if i didnt sort thier last email request out, they would close my account. Didn't even know that I had an account with Barclays lol
You can always set up a new account if they did ever lose your data :)

Also if you are ever in doubt about the site you're on (shouldn't be but still), if you enter a wrong user name and password a genuine site will reject it, a scam one almost certainly won't.

If you look at the email although it says paypal etc you will also see the senders email address, usualy a hotmail or yahoo account. By clicking the reply button instead of the fake paypal it will have the hotmail account as to who it is being sent too. This is an easy way to spot it.

Banks, intermediaries, online shopping accounts etc, never send you an email to 'remind' you to update your details - why would they? If you try to use your account, having logged in etc under your own steam, they'll ask you to update you details then, and only if it needs doing. The reason scam emails are still so prevalent is that there still enough non-thinking people out there (men and wormen) to hoodwink :stupid:

Sure they do, paypal recently wrote to me as my card was going to expire and asked me to log in and enter details of a new card, the link was in the email too. I did it via the site login anyway.

Tell her to install Firefox with the google toolbar as well, they will both detect and stop you getting to fake sites.

dunno if this has been suggested, havent read through the entire thread.

If you configure your router to use opendns (www.opendns.com (http://www.opendns.com)) then one of the things you benefit from (apart from good fast reliable name resolution) is that they maintain a pretty good phishing site list. Doesnt matter then which browser or OS you use, it will get stopped at the router.

btw, opendns kindly blocked access to the URL in the original post.......and its free
