Am I being completely stupid? I fitted my new chain and sprockets today but the front sprocket seems to be the wrong size. I've never had this issue before. I checked it against the old one and it seems fine, it has the same number of teeth and it is supposed to be for my model zx6.

When I turn the wheel it sticks at certain points, I presumed this was because the chain was tight but having left the bike on the paddock stand in gear to see if it "relaxed" a little over time nothing seems any better. :(

Is it possible that the manufacturing process has gone wrong on the sprocket and the teeth are slightly different? Or is there something obvious I am missing or is it normal? The problem is deffinately at the front, I've taken the sprocket cover off (bloody thing) and the chain appears to grip the sprocket and not let go when it needs to.

Help!

Sounds like the pitch of the chain or sprockets dont match.
Get your old sprocket and just offer it into the new chain, does it mate smoothly (leave out any inuendos)?

That's what I was thinking. They looked the same though but didn't even think about the chain. :S Surely it would cause issues with the rear sprocket too if it was the chain? Old sprocket may be in the bin :( Don't tell me I have to go digging, that's not a good look.

The pitch can be fractionally out where it seems the same but enough to not 'marry' with the chain.

Sounds like it to me anyway, but im no expert.

yeh sounds like the teeth are been forced over the sprocket and then getting stuck, looks like bin diving for you lol

I think that must be it. The chain fits for around 5 links and then starts to un-allign itself with the sprocket. So do I buy a new sprocket? Bloody thing, not good when the bike is your only transport.

Post up the manufacturer and part numbers of the new chain and the front sprocket.

It will give me, or somebody else who sees it first, the info they need to give you the advice you need.

Also, get a mod to move this to SV Talk, Tuning and Tweaking and you'll get a better response. Some of the guys who really know their technical onions only look at that section.

I would Ralph but the front sprocket didn't come with a number, I presume it's 4044-15 (written randomly on the invoice) but no idea what make it is. The chain is definately correct for the zx6, I checked at a dealer today. I've ordered a new one now anyway.

So did you order a specific size, or did the dealer send it to you as part of a chain and sprocket kit? If the dealer advised that's what you needed and sent you chain and sprockets all together or it was supplied as a final drive kit, the dealer should swap the sprocket free of charge IMO.

There will be lots of sprockets that are correct for a ZX6, that just means it fits, but there will be different sprocket widths and pitches, which needs to match up with your chain.

I got the original kit altogether off of ebay specifically for my bike. My theory is that they just gave the wrong front sprocket. Might contact them to see what they say about it.

Decided to go to the dealer today because I'm desperate to get the 6 back on the road. But he advised that the chain was correct and the sprocket I have ordered should fit it. Fingers crossed. This'll teach me to go cheap! :)

Are you sure the front and rear sprockets are aligned properly? I can't see how but if there not running in the same plane you could have with the chain running up the outside of the front sprcket. It would have to be Miiiiles out I would have thought though. Spacer missing or possibly the rear wheel out of line, possibly not put back straight after moving it?

I've been and checked. The wheel is fitted corectly. All the spacers are in because they were a pain in the ar$e to get in. My wheel alignment was out slightly before I changed the chain but I'm sure it's right now (Markings line up and I started with the bolts fully in and did 30 turns ish on each side). Still waiting on the new sprocket but will be fitting it tonight so fingers crossed it solves the problem. :S

Just as a side note; be careful not to take the marks on the swingarm , number of turns of the bolt or distance to the swingarm as gospel that the wheels are aligned.

That's true, I do it with number of turns first then have a look at the markings to see if they look about right. Usually check wheel against a broom pole too if I feel I need to.

Anyhoo, new sprocket is perfect. I checked the one that was fitted, the teeth were around .5mm wider than the oem one. Think I'll be having words with the seller. Thanks for the help everyone x
