View Full Version : How should Mr Endo lube his chain?

This is borne out of Mr Endo's "More Stupid Questions, I can't seem to get a answer", thread. He's still not getting an answer because I've given one bit of advice and Biker Biggles has given another. How he he going to be anything other than more confused? So we need a poll folks!

Please vote for whichever you think is the CORRECT advice. I have no interest in posting this Poll, which way the opinion swings. All that matters is that Mr Endo gets the right advice, or at least the advice that the majority believe to be right!

How should Mr Endo clean and lube his chain? He does not have a Scottoiler.

Please vote for what you would advise

A: Clean with parrafin, dry with rag, lube with a good quality chain lube

B: Never clean it, lube with used engine oil

Use parrafin and a paint brush from your local DIY store to clean the chain, then wipe it dry with a rag before applying the lube... Chain lube is personal preference, so long as you buy a decent brand and apply it as per the instructions

And now for the complete opposite advice.
First the chain.I have an SV with about 28000 miles on the current chain and sprockets.I have NEVER cleaned it or used any off the shelf chain lubes on it.I just put a bit of used engine oil on it and spread it around with an old paintbrush if I have time.Little and often.

both wrong : clean with parafin and a rag when required (read: pretty rarely) and coat with a quality lube as often as possible, 200 miles ish or before?

:D

or engine oil if you're using a scottoiler or alike...

Option 2, but I have a scottoiler on.

Biker Biggles has voted, does that mean I have to vote too to balance it out? :p

:D

NO KEITHD OPTION!! I hate the KeithD option! Stop confusing the lad and just vote for the one that's closest :p

Mr Endo obviously doesn't have a Scottoiler or he wouldn't be asking the question!

fine
option a is closer to what do. although I've found there's rarely build up worth cleaning off.
I'd be happy to use engine oil in a scottoiler or along side lube but I wouldn't have thought it'd cling well enough to be used on its own.

clean it with gunk once a week and lube it with old engine oil before every ride.

before every ride.

Couldn't be ar$ed with that personally, just get a Scottoiler. Mine gets done every 200 - 300 miles.

takes about 30 secs which is done while i'm checking rear tyre also for any nails etc(cause we all do that before every ride don't we?);)

Or in my case - buy Scottoiler, sort out getting it fixed in, fixer changes mind, dry chain and scottoiler in cellar.

Doesn't matter anyway. Havent ridden it in ages. It'll be a pile of siezed rust before it gets looked at again

i find motorex 622 chainlube will last upto 1000 miles between applications and pos 200 to 500 miles in the wet and in winter when its salty, and i can get a chain to last upto 20000 miles or more on some bikes.and i have never cleaned a chain before

Close enough, vote for the first one.

Correct answer IMO is either.

If you are using old engine oil, probably 100 miles in between applications is OK. Good quality chain lube a bit longer but not much.

Proper solution is scottoiler.

But I can't, as its not specific enough ;)

doesnt engine oil damage the 'o' rings in the chain?
and using a scottoiler will only lube one side of the chain or put more lube on one side of the chain.
i just buy can of chain lube and spray every few days or 200miles (i carry a can round with me most the time) clean with chain cleaner every services (3K intervals/monthly)

No

BS. No fact in this, scottoilers work fine.

Nasty old oil hasnt damaged my O rings in 28000 miles
It also hasnt cost me a penny.

As for the only lubing one side of the chain Ill await Sid Squid to put you right on that.:D

Well....if you spray any oil liberally over the centre........the chain rolls it all over anyway when it moves. Haven't had a chain naff up on me yet, but then I saturate the chain in oil.

Regarding BB having done 28,000 on the same set of sprockets/chain isn't that irrelevant?

If i rag a bike then they can be way past their best in well under 10,000. However if i carefully pulled away and was all round more delicate with everything i could probably get well over 20,000 too.

Different sets aren't comparable either. No?

Sorry if that's already been mentioned.

I went for option 1 BTW. :D

This needs to be a multi-choice poll. ;)

I reckon either would be fine. It's doing nothing that causes problems.

I'm a bit cautious about using used engine oil for anything after YC made me aware of its lovely carcinogenic properties. Eeek

You're putting it on chain not drinking it!
