After a dirt cheap reliable car to see me through winter.
I'm not getting the bike out if it's snowing or icy, which if the predictions are correct, it may well be this winter!
I'm 24 so insurance needs to be reasonable.
Will mainly be used for commuting ~10miles a day.
What can you lot find me for less than £500 near Leeds?
Go! :smt079

I've just bought a 91 MR2 Jap import RWD mid engine with 18" wheals Blue flame exhaust immaculate condition for 1800. 600 to insure FC, at 23.
Push the boat out go on. You know you want 29MPG with the rear spinning up in anything but dry conditions! :smt071
...RWD when he purposefully wants to use it when the conditions are bad? Yeah, ok.

I had a Mk3 MR2 in the snow last year, didnt get stuck where a lot of beemers etc. did, more weight over the back wheels, still could be a bit hary in the wet.

Toyotas you can't go wrong with. My mate bought one with 180k to hack his final year at uni, all it needed was 4 tires and a MOT

Yeah really, mine (BMW E30 328 ) was fine all last winter, this year it has some winter rear tyres coming and has a limited slip diff that i fitted in the summer so it will be better than most front wheel drive cars:santa:
But for a challenge and a laugh i will get the 125 a new rear tyre and give that a go.

MTFU? How about you Wise...TFU. He's on a budget and wants to use a car for when it is particularly bad conditions to get to work and you suggest a car which you say will wheelspin in anything but the dry?
I've just bought a (98 ) 1.3 Hyundai accent coupe for £250 T&T :) 120k miles on it though! But it has been looked after.
Decent little run around for when the weather is crap and can't be bothered with putting on the bike gear. Cheap insurance (if there is such a thing!) and fairly good on fuel, only thing is mine hasn't got PAS (but most will have).

The OP is 24 and wanted reasonable insurance. I sincerely doubt whether the MR2 turbo or not, meets that criteria.
I reckon the OP would be able to pick up a Micra for that sort of money, alternatively I saw a 106 diesel on auto trader for not much more than £500 the other day.
so many factors come into choosing cars, we all have different likes and ideas, and even older farts like me in my 30s with years worth of no claims still get wallet raped big time. nearly £500 to insure a mildly warm, ancient alfa.
Things like micras, corsas and fiat seicentos will be your daily friend with the lowest insurance groups going.
500 notes buys you my golf convertible with one years mot on it, delivered to leeds.

Thanks for all the replies, some food for thought.
Just to give you an idea - best price for a micra on confused was over £600, and that's with 3 years no claims. Strangley enough however, a 3 series 2 litre petrol is only 150 or so more, which I'd rather pay than drive a micra - nothing against them, but I would prefer a bit more space. By my thinking, if it's a bit of a dog of a car I can happily use it as a workhorse (for such things as buying wood for my fire etc) without worrying about messing up the girlfriends car.
Heading to an auction tomorrow night so I'll see what turns up, but Bigbadd, if your offer is a serious one, that might just be the ticket. Where are you based?

yeh see where your coming from but then factor in your running costs for the bm vs micra-
if your gonna use it for wood etc you be as well as getting a estate type or a van

Check my last post - bm estate on there, any good?
Had a look at vans but dont know much about them and couldnt seem to find any within my price range. Would be handy for shipping bikes about though

Just bought myself a motor at auction tonight, having a look through the docs etc, and transferring the ownership over to me - when I send the V5 logbook off does it need the signature from the previous registered keeper?! (because it doesnt!!)
Anyone any idea?

Wat motor did you go for?

with dread and anticipation we wait to find out just how "economic" you've been.
My bets are its at least a 1.8l and no doubt rear wheel drive.

Morning All,
Well, it's coming around to that time of year again, so the challenge is back on - find me a winter car!
Budget is around £500, maybe stretch it a bit for the right car.
(And apologies to those who helped last year for not updating you with my choice last winter - frankly it was embarrassing and purely a result of getting 'auction fever' - it was a saloon Megane 1.6 petrol with around 100k on the clock, bought for the princely sum of £330! To be fair, it did last me 6 months but then needed scrapping)

Try Gumtree again, there looked to be a terribly embarrassing vehicle there for £500. Go to the first page and follow the link. I've never even heard of the make before! LOL
