Don't know if anyone else on here is following, but as it's a matter of national pride I thought it was worth a thread.
Looks like a brilliant start... Captain losing his nerves and South Africa to the rescue. It's going to be a stressful series.

just play one game and be done with it. 90 minutes.
Pah... real men do it for 5 days with breaks for lunch and afternoon tea...

I stayed up all night. Made a duvet nest on the sofa. May well do the same over the next few nights as I've booked a few days off work. I've already warned the family that on Christmas day this year I shall be taking a power nap at 6pm to prepare for the start of the Boxing Day Test on TV.
At least working at Lord's means that most of the staff will be up watching it so we're all as knackered as each other. The senior management have gone to Aus so aren't around to moan about us all being tired at work.

Can't say that I blame you - not the way England play.

Even if you don't like cricket you have to admire the way England are playing. Cookie's knock made this Essex girl very proud and seeing Ponting get a golden duck was magnificent today. I'm once again making my bed on the sofa so I can watch for most of the night. Come on England!

I too watched it through the night, and I've watched the highlights twice today. I've napped this evening and will be in bed very shortly with the alarm set for 11pm.
does anyone know what the 'kick off' was about at the end of the 1st day's play?
Bring it on! :)

Brilliant! I reckon the kick off was just a little bit of banter. Strauss having the upper hand for once. Loving it!

Really enjoying this. Cook is playing like an utter star.
Aussie's on 2-3? that must be a record.
Ponting out for a duck - I don't think there are many people in cricket tha wouldn't want to see that.
Looking like it could be an interesting series

The set to with Ponting was about Anderson mouthing off at Haddin. Anderson is quiet as a mouse off the field but on it he's pretty fiesty.
The Ashes Urn isn't even a trophy. It was a private gift from the family who owned it to MCC and it's still safely in the Museum at Lord's and will never be given to the winning team. The idea that you 'play for the Ashes' is purely symbolic, though there is now the Waterford Crystal Urn which is presented.
Cookie is in the form of his life, but it makes me laugh the way the media keep saying he was close to being dropped before the Ashes. That was never in Andy Flower's mind, only in the media. I've known Alastair since he was a teenager and I'm so proud of him.

I think even that Urn was made as a joke.
AFAIK the series was named after a newspaper published an obituary for english cricket stating that the body had been created and and ashes sent to Australia.
The next tour was to regain the Ashes, and someone made the ashes trophy because of this.
The Urn itself matters not (although now it's old and valuble). The prize is the life or death of english cricket. We win it down under, and we're truly back.
Excellent leave by Strauss...:smt103
Cookie is, and has been for some time, the best opener in English cricket. Who could replace him if he was struggling for form?
And what a bowling attack?!! Which country can boast 4 bowlers of that class?
Slept most of the afternoon, and will be Grolsch-ing my way through the night.
Big fry up planned for 7am, then to bed.!

I'm getting through the day without sleep so far but off to the NEC in the morning so I need to get some kip at some point. Cookie texted this morning to say he's annoyed he's missing the snow. After that long batting in 40 degree heat he was probably was dreaming of cooler weather.

Hmmm, can't help thinking we should have declared over night to make the most of the morning swing. Although I suppose it's only and 8 overs and a change that we've lost in exchange for 69 runs.
Although if it's a draw I'll slate Strauss. Lol.
Would like to see Swann on now. 29-0 and Broad & Anderson are looking very average on the 'flat' pitch.
Ran out of JD too

Quote of the day:
"Theres definatly some weather around" - S Warne
Personally I don't believe there was any weather in the vicinity when he said it, or at any other time ever!
Brilliant win there. Totally dominant.
One more win to retain, but lets hope we thrash them!
England winning by an innings in Australia!!
Never thought I'd be posting that!!

if you follow test cricket you'll know that that result isnt really that much of a surprise. The Aussies are in turmoil, no direction, no confidence and tiny face Ponting is on a hiding to nothing.
Shame we have lost Broad, could be more of a blow than first appears. OK he's only taken 2 wickets but he is very aggressive, a match winner and more than capable of holding an end up creating pressure while the likes of Swann and Anderson rip up the other. Bresnan as a replacement worries me a little and Tremlett is injury prone and possibly not up to it. I hope im wrong..
England 2-0 final score

I'm just watching the highlights show just so I can enjoy it all over again. Andy Flower admitted in an email he was quite scared about the weather forecast before play started.
Anderson also comes home this week as his wife is being induced in a couple of days so the next warm up match will give Andy and Andrew Strauss a chance to test two of the bowlers ahead of the next Test.
I'm seeing Graham Onions on Thursday and he's on the mend but a shame he still isn't fit. His scans have been quite positive though. Let's hope we get him back in time for next summer.
http://forums.sv650.org/picture.php?albumid=721&pictureid=5072
I hope Tremlett gets the nod ahead of Bresnan, even though Bresnan is from God's country too. I think Tremlett's height, on hard bouncy Australian wickets, could be a telling factor. However, I think England could miss Broad in the tail if England have a bit of a collapse.
MisterTommyH

Rumours of a Shane Warne return to 'rescue' the Australian side?
I hope it happens, just because it smacks of desperation.
Somehow I think he'd struggle. He's been out for 3 years and it won't be easy to spend days in the field after so long out. Cricket isn't the most energetic sport but imagine the stamina that's needed to spend as long as cookie monster has on the field, or to bowl 60 overs.
Littlepeahead

Shane Warne and Liz Hurley - who'd have thought it. I think it's a cunning plan of distraction by cricket fan Hugh Grant - as while Shane is 'spending quality time' with Liz he won't be planing a comeback of any other sort!

WOW! When I saw the score this morning I thought we'd opted to bat and been rained off.
But no, we won the toss, put the convicts in, got rained off, bowled them out and then proceeded to take a 60 run lead for no loss! I have never wanted to be at a match so much in my life! This tour is turning out to be epic.
Anyone know a quick way to Australia? Problem is this might all be over by the time a flight got there lol.

I stayed up and watched until lunch then TMS in bed til morning. Superb performance by England. Be great if we can put on a lead of about 450 and give ourselves about 2 1/2 days to bowl them out. Loved the way Boycott was writing us off after 12 minutes when we dropped a catch. My mate who is media manager of the MCG has been strangely quiet today... as have all my other Aussie friends. I wonder why?
The most annoying thing for me is that they don't work these miracles until after I've fallen asleep... stayed up until 3 this morning, but the extended lunch pretty much bored me to sleep and then I wake up to them knocking off the last 5 men for 30 more runs and then getting on with the job of putting a decent score on the board.
Not happy (and slightly bleary eyed) of Yorkshire :p

I don't want to jynx anything, but that would take a performance that the Aussies haven't managed in quite a while.
if they are not burning anyone why is it called Ashes?? :)
Woke up at 4:15am, wide awake, so flicked on the tv. Oh we we Churchie!
So....... England lead by 346 with 5 wickets left and 3 days to go, and Ricky Ponting's lost it with both the on-field Umpires, and all the technology available for reviews.
The writing is on the wall for the Aussies :D

I was amazed ICC only fined Weasel Face Ponting 40%. When Prior got called back after that no ball I was waiting for Ponting to spontaneously combust. I reckon for the final Test they should 'rest' Colly and give Morgs a go.

I am now properly tired. But I plan to stay up tonight until the end. I'd love to see them go on to win 3-1 even though I have £10 on at 9-1 for England to win 2-1.
I did the hotos of Strauss packing up the Crystal Urn Trophy to take to Australi and it will be my job to take the photos when they put that Trophy back in the Museum at Lord's when it returns which will be a very sweet moment.
This is quoting Prav on the Beeb live feed. He usually uses lots of imagery but this is pretty excellent. I think he's getting excited:
'More runs for Haddin with another punchy straight drive for a couple before he is caught fishing outside off stump, although fortune is tickling his armpits as an outside edge whizzes past a vacant fourth slip for a boundary. Tremlett hits back with a beauty which curves beautifully away from the bat in the air as Haddin nicks a thin edge just short of the outstretched diving right mitt of Matt Prior.'
What the hell does it mean:confused:

Predictions for this one? Match - Draw due to being rained off. Series - 2-1 to England.

We're almost there. I had £10 on a 2-1 win at 9-1 but frankly thrashing the Aussies 3-1 is worth being £90 worse off.
I've got Gatting in early tomorrow morning doing media stuff alongside the Urn so look out for us on News at 10 on ITV.
I think it's a shame Colly felt he had to retire from Tests. We'll miss him in the slips, but he makes way for another ginger as Morgan must be about ready to take his place. Another born and bred Englishman - er or do I mean Irish?
I loved the way Cookie has said that as soon as the Ashes is over he's back to help with the lambing. He loves driving a tractor and getting up to his knees in sheep poo and mud and helping with the sickly lambs. A bit different from Flintoff in the 'staying down to earth' stakes.

I might finally get a decent nights sleep if they do the business early.
So LPH with your inside knowledge is there any truth in the rumour that they've been greasing their bats to beat the hot-spot? I'm sure I've seen white lines down the edges,,,
