Is winging its way through the post to me for tomorrow..

It is my final ditch attempt to stay away from apple and their "ooh Shiny" sales techniques.

If i don't like it then its going back and ill have to sign my soul over to the Apple Man.

Damn..

I have been very anti-apple since the start. So much so i have never owned a ipod, i always got the creative players. Lately tho ive been feeling a lil left out so got myself the iphone 4 and i am totally shocked! I freakin luvs it. Jus the free apps keep me busy (i b simples) and its soooo easy to use.

BUY ONE!

Will you update how you get on with the HTC? My HD2 is up for renewal in April, so looking for a nice replacment - not of the sheep like ipple flavour.

Gotta an HTC Desire - absolutely love it.

Only thing I am a little disappointed with is the maps and navigation, got to have a 3g signal and GPS to find you and then get a route downloaded. Looking forward to Tontom on android coming soon.

Camera good, wether facility, planner/diary - use em all, so simple to use.

As soon as I have tomtom it will be the perfect gadget

Had no problems with maps on my HTC Desire. Very useful, though falls a little short of a dedicated sat nav.

My desire would be better if I hadn't dropped it and smashed the screen!

I love my Desire too. Easily the best phone I have ever used.

Only niggle is the phone function gets a bit dodgy if I leave the 3G switched on. On 2 out of 5 calls out from my phone the recipient can't hear me, even though I can hear them - turn the 3G off and it works perfectly every time. There's an added advantage of it being impossible to write a text message whilst driving, so that's one less thing I can get nicked for.

Orange. I'm not impressed by them tbh, their coverage of the UK is not a patch on 02's. The last time I had this much trouble getting a signal when passing somewhere major like Cambridge on the A14 was back in 1990. I spend a fair bit of my time using customer's landlines because I can't call the office on my phone, and this happens all over the place from Gloucester to Gt Yarmouth. If Orange don't sort their coverage out I'll be switching back to 02 when my contract expires.

You may already know this Lozzo but Orange and T-Mobile are merging so you can use both networks. It may help with your signal issues.

Thanks Scott. I already knew about that, but wasn't sure if the T-Mobile network was any better.

+1 on the desire.

Navigation is as good as Tom Tom and never had any issues with 3G and phonecalls

Only issue is battery life when GPS is on but there are bigger batteries in ebay.

The Desire kicks iphones asre.

Thanks Scott. I already knew about that, but wasn't sure if the T-Mobile network was any better.

It's not Orange so much as Orange's 3G network. They seem to have lots of probs with their masts too.

If you get many more probs, call customer services. They may know a work around. Their customer service has always been tops for me.

I had an htc years ago and loved it. The iPhone came out and I wasnt interested. The someone got me one as a gift from the US and I've had one ever since. The wildfire is the worst phone I've had the displeasure of trying to use (oh has one).

I've owned 3 apple products in my life and they're outstanding. Most impressive was a PowerBook that lasted 8 years. Sold it on with no issues and it never crashed the whole time I had it.

HTC 7 the windows phone? Probably be a very different exp to the Android sisters out there but im sure it will be ok, has to be really or MS are in trouble :-?

People who mention the free satnav not being brilliant, ill just mention that yes needs coverage, but it is free and does work when the ****ty networks arnt letting us down... which is too often.

Oh and Orange suck Lozzo, they customised ROM (guess you got the orange version with their crap on) spoils the phone! I installed the stock ROM from HTC and the phone is just a million times better, it works all the time and has no ****ty little bugs like you mention. HTC need to put their foot down and tell the Networks to pi&s of and make us all use stock software!

phil24_7

What's the best/easiest way to install the vanilla/stock HTC software, and keep all phone numbers, pics etc?

Well its not too bad to do if you have some computer knowledge. I can find a link to how to do it if you like. Basically though you have to make your SD card into something called a gold card. You then use your computer to change the ROM.

Can be a fiddle sometimes, mine didn't want to load the ROM at first but managed to figure out why.

It's easy to save the numbers, they can be saved to your Google account so will auto associate when you start back up after the ROM. Pictures you can take off of the card and put back on after.

You can't actually brick (break) your phone doing this. It will either work or not. Even if you power off part way through it should be sortable.

There is only one catch. You will always have to use your gold card if you get another card you can make that into a gold card so its not too bad as long as you know. If you don't then updates don't work right.

I'm also not sure about warranty. I can't see why it should void but I hear it might.

androidforums.com/desire-tips-tricks/67098-how-flash-debrand-your-desire.html

This is older now but should be fine! The Rom is the original stock one but after updating 4-5 time over the air, it will be upto date.

Cheers.

What do you mean by I always have to use the gold card? Is that the only memory card I would be able to use in the phone?

Yes. What a gold card is is just a memory card with the first 180 bits altered. So you can or should be able to make any memory card a gold card. All you have to do if you are wanting another memory card just make it into a gold card. A 5 min job once you have done it once... You won't be able to tell any difference. It's there just for the phone when its playing with updates so it does them right.

Any more Q's just gimme a shout.

Well I finally got the phone and first impressions are good, it just works.

Emails sorted, includind read & edit in "word & Excell
FB sorted
Internet sorted
Music Sorted
Sat nav (soon to be sorted)
Pictures sorted

I dont think it is as arty farty as an Iphone, it just does what it needs when it needs, a few more user functions would be useful but it does stop me getting lost in the settings and buggering something up.

Massive thumbs up from me :-)

Had no problems with maps on my HTC Desire. Very useful, though falls a little short of a dedicated sat nav.

I got Co-Pilot for mine £25 for a UK sat nav software and it's crackalackin

People who mention the free satnav not being brilliant, ill just mention that yes needs coverage, but it is free and does work when the ****ty networks arnt letting us down... which is too often.

True, the Co-pilot software is the map too so you don't ned data connection, just the GPS

I installed the stock ROM from HTC and the phone is just a million times better, it works all the time and has no ****ty little bugs like you mention. HTC need to put their foot down and tell the Networks to pi&s of and make us all use stock software!

I've got HTC Hero for personal phone and Desire for work so can't do anything to the Desire, I love it, I just don't really get to use it fully cos I only need it from 08:30 - 17:00.

I tried to install a different ROM on the Hero but found it really hard to do, I finally got around to somehow rooting it (I have no idea how) put another ROM on it but had a few problems ended up just re-flashing the normal Orange rom back to it.

Rooting I aint done, dont feel the need tbh. The flash was ok, I guess it depends on how well the guide is written. The one I used was pretty cracking :)

I have been very pleased with mine,

It just works.. no real iffs.. no butts.

I prefer it to the Iphone 4 both in design and operation, the only thing I would say that needs changing is it could do with expandable memory.

set up will take you about 10 minutes,

Mines connected to our Outlook and errr just works.

iphones have been my choice for the past 4 years I'm currently on the iphone4 so I will let you know what I think in comparison.

I wouldn't bother, WP7 is s*ite.

I played with it for about 1/2hr, the gui icons are massive and the only reason to keep a windows phone (local outlook sync) has been removed in favor of network sync to exchange or via the cloud. It went back in the box and got sent back.

However, I got an Andriod phone last week (Galaxy S), and i'm quite impressed by it.

Why is local outlook sync better?

I get my work email via exchange but as its my Phone not works he rest of the phone is mine with my contacts etc.

Its more stable than my colleagues I phone too :smt019

I can see why you sent it back wise choice.

HTC Trophy, it really does just go to show how people just follow the I hate apple bandwagon.
This Windows 7 phone is more limited and restricted than the iphone will ever be.

After 2 days here is my quick review.

Its Zune dependent for file management and syncing (just like itunes)
No Flash support
Really Really Limited apps.
No multitasking
No copy/paste
No USB mass storage mode
No Bluetooth file transfers
Push notifications for apps hardly works.
Its slow and clunky even zooming in and out on photos you can see it loading the frames bit by bit.
The Internet explorer is very WAP looking.
Even the Microsoft MSN Messenger runs like a dog, I use the official MSN app on my iphone all the time and cant get my head round how the iphone version runs and functions so much better than the 7os version.
The only good thing I can say about this handset is the call quality is quite good and the emails work well but other than that I would be really disappointed if I purchased this handset.
If your thinking of getting a W7 phone I would say save your money and go IOS or android because your not getting much for your money here.

The phone its self is nicely designed and would probably be a good handset if it was priced around £200 new running android.

Ok you have some valid points but please bare in mind.

There is no Hate apple bandwagon, i genuinely don't like their products, and I made the win 7 choice based on trying the iphone 4

I would have had to pay 150£ on there abouts for the Iphone 4 on a more expensive contract. The Trophy IS a cheaper phone.

The phone does multitask...and the iphones don't run flash either do they?

The limited Apps and zune software dont bother me, I hate I tunes with a passion as it is overly complicated and faffy, Zune works for me.

The limited apps isnt a problem as I really don't need a silly voice rabbit etc

The mass storage doesnt bother me, I keep my USB drive with me anyway as i find it more useable, granted it might be useful id the trophy had extend-able memory (this is one thing that does frustrate me about the phone)

ie on the phone looks much like IE on the computer.. don't really know what more you need from a web browser?

The thing is you are saying go android instead of this or potentially an Iphone but this windows 7 platform is good, it does just work.. I dont know what you mean about the photos as technically speaking its more powerful than the iphone?

I have sat side by side with my brothers Iphone 4, and not once have I wished I had paid £150 and was paying £40 a month.

It isnt and never will be an iphone, or android, but it is new and it is different, and it gives people like me who genuinely dont like apple products and their prices an alternative which does 95% of the iphone function at 75% of the price, and I know that given the option again, id still choose this win 7 Platform

BUT thats because it meets my needs at this time, for what I need my phone for, if you send it back then fair play its not for you, in the same way we choose different motorcycles.

Sorry didn't mean you in particular buddy but alot of the things that people love to point out about iphones being crap well this device has all of them and more.

I would have had to pay 150£ on there abouts for the Iphone 4 on a more expensive contract. The Trophy IS a cheaper phone.

Yes the iphone4 expensive and I'm not saying it must be the iphone4 but I feel something from the android range would have much more to offer pound for pound.

The phone does multitask ...and the iphones don't run flash either do they?

It doesn't multi task if I exit the msn app to make a phone call when I click back on the msn app it has to load up again same for youtube and almost all the other apps

Flash Nope (unless you jb) again just pointing out things that people slate apple for.

The limited Apps and zune software dont bother me, I hate I tunes with a passion as it is overly complicated and faffy, Zune works for me.

I was just pointing out the fact that like apple the new 7OS is also software dependent too for transfers and syncing.
but as you with zune, I find itunes just works for me when I decided I want to use it.

The limited apps isnt a problem as I really don't need a silly voice rabbit etc

Its much much than silly voice rabit lol, I'm not on about games and toy apps i mean real word apps like logmein, GPS Trackers, Dropbox , networking applications eg citrix, sky+ and much more beyond games.

The mass storage doesnt bother me, I keep my USB drive with me anyway as i find it more useable, granted it might be useful id the trophy had extend-able memory (this is one thing that does frustrate me about the phone)

Doesn't bother me either just another point that the apple hating bandwagon jump on.

ie on the phone looks much like IE on the computer.. don't really know what more you need from a web browser?

The ie is very slow and reminds me when i had my first phone with a browser very wap like.

The thing is you are saying go android instead of this or potentially an Iphone but this windows 7 platform is good, it does just work.. I dont know what you mean about the photos as technically speaking its more powerful than the iphone?

My phone does also just work , and I have found up to now it does a much better than my work phone.
Take a photo and pinch to zoom in and out of the image you can see it lagging as it zooms in and out, the same happens on web pages ect

I have sat side by side with my brothers Iphone 4, and not once have I wished I had paid £150 and was paying £40 a month.

If your happy that's all that counts :) , but I could easily justify the extra money when comparing to this device.

It isnt and never will be an iphone, or android, but it is new and it is different, and it gives people like me who genuinely dont like apple products and their prices an alternative which does 95% of the iphone function at 75% of the price, and I know that given the option again, id still choose this win 7 Platform

It is new and does look jazzy and I give credit to Microsoft for coming out with a different approach to the smart phone OS image, as for the 95% .... for me it doesn't even do 60% but let say based on your average user it does do 95% of what the iphone can, imho it doesn't do very well.

BUT thats because it meets my needs at this time, for what I need my phone for, if you send it back then fair play its not for you, in the same way we choose different motorcycles.

totally agree if its working for you then I'm glad you are geting what you wanted from it :) I'm not the type of person to slate something just because I own a different make/model if its good kit I will praise the hell out of it but imo this isn't worth the pennies even compared to other handsets and I don't just mean iphones i think you can get alot more from similar priced devices.

PS don't we all own sv650's or triumphs on here :D

Cheers

Ant.

finding the phone really slow with exchange, messages and appointments are really delayed up-to 5-10 minutes sometimes, and this is on a wifi network so poor signal is not the cause. As a test I just sent an email from my gmail account on my work PC to my works email and it came up on the iphone before it hit my inbox on the pc then a few minutes later the Trophy buzzed.
