What do you want to use it for - the key question when chosing a phone.

I keep looking

I want to talk to other people by telephone, and let them hear me, and I hear them. I know it sounds simple, but I cannot do it on the cheap and nasty nokia rubbish thing O2 have given me 3 times. They have finally acknowledged there is a fault on some, but cannot say which until it goes bluurrb instead of voice.

I also need dual sim. So I can carry one phone but accept personal and work calls.

Occasional mobile internet access would be useful. Texts don't want/need.

Personal use, maybe 10 calls a month outgoing. But need to receive.

Also needs to have SIP and wifi.

Please recommend phone and package.

Take out the Desire and add either the Galaxy S or the Desire HD, Since I hate apple then I would go for either of these, I have the Galaxy S and love it.

How do you embed a link?

Oh I have the desire which is okay the internet works well on the phone, was able to download a word document I need to some info off it, then put into the Sat Nav so not bad. The camera seems better on my frinds Iphone 4, but I haven't really set the camera up on the phone tbh. I would like to get the HD version of it to see if its any better.

I could have watched content of Iplayer as well, but I was doing that over wi-fi but I used my laptop as well its better! If use a use the web, sat nav ect it drains the battery within 1-2 hours I would say. Plus side you take the battery out and memory which is very useful.

V - I love my desire. I read about issues with the battery life but to be frank, I've found it to be a load of ********. Using Sat Nav does drain it fairly quickly but contrary to what people suggest about just having wi-fi and GPS enable draining the battery, I've not thought it was too bad. I have found whilst I've not been well that on stand by, receiving email and the odd text, it's last about 2 days without charge but when getting normal usage (emails, texts, a few short phone calls (or long if from GG), picture taking and short bursts of internet usage) it lasts about a day. I charge it whenever I go to bed.

It is extremely customisable (is that a word) and I started with the 7 blank homepages and added all my own widgets and stuff. I love the interface, its so easy to use and to be honest I think it is a million times better than the Blackberry I had before.

Would fully recommend the Desire.

I wanted a phone for music, basic photos and GPS so as I was about 2 years out of contract I asked Orange.I got sent a Nokia 5230 which is pretty basic,,I set up the maps for the GPS,coming home one night I thought I would try out the GPS and it worked fine, gets home and switched the screen off. My average bill monthly is only £15 as I have 400mins and 100 texts before I get charged and it is very very rare I go over the limit

NOT THIS TIME £123:88------They said I had been on the internet for days on end,but will not accept that it is impossible, plus when I phoned they said I was still on the internet and already have another £68 of internet charge on my next bill,
I went loopy as no matter what I did with the internet it would not switch off and the only way to stop the connection was from Oranges end. Orange will not accept that there could be a fault on the phone I am now on 15days since receiving the new phone and they will not let me send it back or cancel as I am over the 7 day probation period.
After much arguing with different departments they have agreed to cancel the internet charges, but not refund the money, instead my account is now about £160 in credit so I shouldn't have a phone bill for the next 9 months[I HOPE]
Only problem I have now is a phone that is "Not fit for purpose" so I will be back on to Orange Monday for more arguments no doubt,TRYING TO GET A NEW PHONE or an internet package[bundle]for a £5p.m. and let them worry about the excessive usage.

Can you get dual sim into an iPhone 3Gs?

SIII
28-11-10, 07:14 PM
I got a very good deal from Orange - only problem was it took 5 calls to customer sevices to before they got it right:rolleyes: Kept missing off part of my packeage.

The upside is everytime I complained they credited me with the disputed amount. At the moment I have unlimited internet, unlimited texts, 800 minutes and 30 photo/mth and have paid a total of £11.00 for 2 months use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(most recent bill was for -£0.16).

So yes they are useless but just complain and you get credit. To be honest the last complaint I made was purely my not understanding the way they work - but still got £4.00 creditted to my account;)

I am hoping for something to go wrong this month so I can save even more:smt043

NDrive is the satnav app. Takes ages to download app and then even longer to download the maps. Takes lots of memory but got 4gb so no problems there.
Currently on a weeks free trial but the maps only cost 10 euro's ish.
Much quicker to use as no need to wait for downloads, even works without gps to route plan. Menu system not as good as tomtom, but still easy to operate. Being able to navigate to a point on map is not avaiable but easy enough to work around.
One of the reasons i got a smartphone was to use as a satnav on the bike with use of an earpiece. Hoping this works well enough to use on the bike.

If you go down android route try to get a stock rom (i.e. not an orange piece of **** one, I wiped my orange rom and put stock on and it works SOO much better). You can get these from the likes of Carphone warehouse. What network are you going to be on?

I have the Desire. Im with Milky, the battery isnt that bad. It will last a day under intense use and with minimal use and turning data off etc when im not needing it I've had 4 days out of it! Usually it'll last 2. To be honest, you wont get significantly better out of any other Smart phone...

Android is a good OS and is being kept updated quite a lot so good things still to come.

Desire HD is arguably better but its a lot bigger and heavier than the desire.

Not sure how the dual sim will work out though.

I must add that i am tied to o2 as i have a poor credit rating and as i have been with them for 13 years i can just roll on.

My eye came across the Desire HD last night...hmmm. Sadly o2 wont be releasing it for a while as they dont want to eat into the HD7's sales. Now this is great but one runs Android, one runs Windows mobile. I wish sometimes that o2 was run by geeks and not accountants.

Bugger as i think that would be the phone for me.

really? iPhone 4 battery is pretty good in my experience. Can be poor if you have every capability enabled all of the time (wifi, bluetooth etc)

Desire is a good phone battery is a little **** for it but loads of free apps, including ones off other sources then the market place, also you can run different versions of the OS if your into that stuff.

Me and a guy at work compared batt life and found it to be pretty similar tbh. Having had smartphones for the past 3 years, I really don't think the desire is bad for battery usage. Not had it go flat on me, not even when I left it at work all day. Came back in for the nightshift and it lasted right through, that was with internet usage and GPS usage to find an address.

Battery life on the desire seems to get better the more it is used and charged, as these batteries 'learn'. Mine wouldn't last more then 6 hours at first (lots of playing on it) but now lasts 2 days of normal use inc internet.

Only downside is when using satnav, screen is on all the time and it only lasted 4 1/2 hours today, most of this time with the satnav on, just to try it out.:smt103

Might look at one of the 3000mAh batteries for use when needing satnav on the bike! Extended rear cover a little ugly but wouldn't matter if in my pocket, then would have original battery to use once arrived at my destination;)

MisterTommyH

Battery life depends on how much you use it.

I'm lucky if I get to 9pm without needing a charge. Having everything all on one device is brilliant in theory, but it means you use it much more, and battery technology only moves on slowly so you end up running out of juice. :smt092

Yea, I think the ones saying Desire battery sucks arnt used to smart phone style battery life... Unless it last less than a day with little use then that is something odd.

Most smart phones have similar battery lifes, its the big screens, highly used antenna, big ram and CPU's that make them short.

Most major smart phones atm have very similar battery eating abilities.

My advice. Wait for new Google nexus S. Basically the galaxy s with more upto date hardware and nice Google stock Rom. So will be the most upto date Android phone. Think ill be tempted as my next one. Android is deffo where ill stick.

Owenski

you could play that game forever tho nick, upon antisipating the release of the nexus there will be a press release of another phone which does everything the nexus does with a cherry on top. Its an endless cycle, its similar to how PC's used to be - basically as soon as you've bought one its already out of date compeared to what else is available.

It cant been too far away before they reach what is practical and useable, case and point is the size of phones. The first big thing was colour screens, then it went to the size of the handset then it went into features, then largest screen, then touch screen, then connectivity and now its on compability and sat nav.

Once they reach the stage of it been the expected standard for handsets then it'll start to level off and at the point you can buy competativly but right now, waiting for the next best thing is futile because once you have it the next best thing to that becomes an option...and so on.

Aye. Your right Owen. Only reason I say go for the new nexus is because it will be the most upto date Android phone, it will get the new OS first as other Android makers have to add their "bits".

I don't think we are far off of standardising smart phones thanks to Android phones. These days the only thing between the big smart phone makers is preference... or poser value. He he.
