View Full Version : How long was your commute this morning?
Well, 6 inches of snow in Norwich and it took me 1hr 20 mins to do my usual 11 mile/15 minute commute - daft thing is that 40 minutes of that was the last 2 miles!

I'm in the UK this week, but I hear Hamburg is pretty bad at the moment, and my office in Denmark is under 2 ft of snow... but it doesn't stop them out there, they just carry on as if it's nothing.
I'm out there from the 20th until 24th... if it snows in Manchester I'll be spending christmas alone in an airport lol

35 mins instead of 30. 5 mins needed to scrape ice off windows of car.
Guy in my work who also has a Fazer came in on it! He's nuts!
Nil. Out of work as of Friday.
Bike running rough and need to sort that and fit hand-guards before I think about going out again in these temperatures - couldn't feel my feet or fingers on the commutes last week.
Nothing, got no work today. I'm sat in front of the logburner with some brew:D

Was a minute late. I should have just done what a load of other folk do and just not turn up!
Not too many cars out so I already felt safer.;)
If I could stick a 21" wheel and some knobblies on the SV it would be perfect.
"They" are forecasting another downfall in the next coupla hours, but I will have tickled the throttle and toddled off home by then.
Love the chaos.

2 hours 50 minutes, Home to Leeds. Best I've done it in is 2 hours, so not so bad. Leeds area and the M62 is just a disaster tonight though.
The really annoying thing is the main reason for coming up was to meet a customer tomorrow, who has cancelled because there is more snow FORECAST!! If they get up tomorrow morning and there's a few inches of snow, then fair enough, but the amount of things that get cancelled as soon as snow is forecast is just PATHETIC!!

No commute for me - decided yesterday when i spent most of the afternoon dogging people out that I was taling facility time. however car still under snow despite being cleared yesterday - main roads are now covered again (NLC are concentrating on airdrie and coatbridge??) so despite the main road being max 2om from where my car is its the bus tmw which will take on a normal day 1hr 20 so you guess is a good as mine - hoping I'll go in turn round and go home again!

40 mile commute into work yesterday was 2 hours, usually 45 minutes, and today my homeward trip was 3 hours, 2 hours the last 10 miles, got stuck in between Sherburn and Higher Pittington. Shovel RB in the boot came out to play :0(

Weston to Nailsea this morning, should take about half an hour, this morning took an hour. Why is that I hear you ask? Well, it was not snow. My XJ broke down again on the M5, then ran really rough from Clevedon to Nailsea. I think that it is an Inline three and a half now!
Last Friday was Portishead to Weston, a trip that usually takes about forty minutes. On Friday it took me two hours, the motorway was down to 45MPH and the final road home was an ice rink. The SV was a marvel and handled beautifully for such a big bike.
Got me some new over gloves this evening, am now wearing liners, winter gloves and over gloves. Hopefully my hands will not be quite so painful in the morning when I arrive at work. Not sure how to stop my helmet icing up though, the visor froze shut and the ice on the inside made it hard to see on the motorway. I am really enjoying this winter commuting lark.
Just about to leave.. car defrosted... doesn't look too bad this morning...
Or have I spoken too soon...!
We got the snow down here now so it could be an interesting trip to work this morning maybe i should conference call my meeting and stay home

More snow here last night, I got to go to Liverpool today, I've decided to go on the train but it's a 25 minute drive across country to Wem train station. Will be interesting!
My commute today was 2 metres... into the home office.
Loads of snow over night for us, fortunately I can work where I like to a certain extent.

I found the bend on the stairs a little dodgy, and the kitchen floor was definitely iffy.;)
Arrived in my home office without further incident, and thankfully the house police are about to deliver more coffee.:D
Snow overnight here. Got up a bit earlier and left about 20 mins earlier.... looks like I was the only one that has bothered. Only 3 of us in the office.
Main roads are like nothing has happened so nobody better call in that they have been snowed in as I will go and get them!
Argghhhhh! Only got about 2 cm of snow here, so got up and set off a bit early for work. The A12 was crawling but still moving.
Then half way to work got a call that the school was closed! Why leave it so freaking late???
Managed to turn off and double back but what a waste of time and money. Not a happy teacer :(

Normally takes 25min on the bike,
Took me 1hr 30min in the car this morning :(
The hour was getting from mine to the motorway. Traffic by the M62 was dumb, people heading on the A58 qued around the roundabout in a very statinary line blocking all other exists on and off of Jnct26 which made all surrounding roads also grid lock. Wasnt impressed! The last half hour was a fairly clear run into leeds via m62/m621/a58(m)
Getting home will be fun, large automatic estate car V's snow and ice which only gets worse the closer to home I get... I suspect a late return to my abode.

Unless ur mrs owenski - who's school never seems to close.
Not impressed at the 6month pregnant wife driving 20mile alone in the snow, especially when she hates driving in snow normally, regardless of pregnancy.
Ralph - trust you -was meant to be digging people! well 1hr 20m my backside
stood a bus stop from 7.30 got the bus at 8.15 and finally got into the office at 9.45. and what thanks do you get for it -
your phone was switched off yesterday when i called -
Was it my work phone?
Yes. I've not used the work phone in 18 months as no-one has given me a charger and none about and been using my personal one instead. which you have called me on several times

At 6 months driving 20 miles would really worry me, my mrs is almost at the 6 month stage and I am worried about her driving at the best of times
The schools here don't seem to close either which I guess is good if your work never closes either...if I can't get there I can work from home (like this week) and having a 7year old in the house when I am trying to concentrate doesn't always work out...
Still I hope Mrs Owenski is safe and sound!

I wouldnt say I worry the rest of the time because I know she's not worried but its just me knowing how much she panics in the snow.
You've all the risks of a normal journey plus the higher accident risk, the devistation of getting trapped, a breakdown etc it prayed on my mind a little bit this morning. Made the desicision she'll be taking unpaid days off if the weather is teh same in Jan/Feb cos Im not having her out alone in bad weather so far on in the pregnancy - too risky for them both.

Don't blame you, sometimes work will take a **** if it can, you need to put your foot down, family/safety first and all that good stuff
The reason I would be so concerned is this time around (second time, 7 years on from the first) the mrs is having a hard time with quite a bit of discomfort (we're getting old). I dread the thought of her driving when some twinge turns up etc and distracts...especially if the road conditions are so bad

Fortunately Matt, the baby is very well protected. Much of the advice to take things easy, don't lift heavy things etc. are more to do with personal muscular injury to the mother than anything else.
Sure, it doesn't help for worrying with weather like this, but best thing she can do if she has to travel, is to make sure there's a sleeping bag, torch and a shovel in the boot, carry a flask of something hot, some food and an in-car phone charger. TBH, I'd probably stick a bucket of rock salt in the boot too (not loose).
Owenski
30-11-10, 02:26 PM
Its the stress on her that worries me most, I know the stress of the mother is picked up on by the baby and my concern is if she's worked up about snow. Then as kavalagi says something happens and is magnified because of the stress caused due to the snow I'd be worried that she'll only make things worse for her and the baby by worrying about the baby. Vicious circle I know but I spose its better than me saying "not really fussed about it all"
Taking this to PM anyway boot, havnt seen u around for a while.

I did wonder when my wife was pregnant how safe the airbag was, when her belly was almost up against the steering wheel.
I came back down from Leeds tonight and sat at 40 mph on lying snow for about 40 miles on the M1 from Sheffield to Nottingham, and still got home in about 2hrs 30.
20 minutes less than it took me to get up there on Monday morning when the roads were completely clear!
Go figure

I wimped out this morning, I fear that I must now hang up my Butch Dyke hat and accept that I am just a big southern pansy. This morning there was ice on the roads, it was snowing and I was very, very cold just in my PJ's in the bathroom, so I made Carol get up at seven this morning on her day off and drive me to work. Some of the roads had not been gritted and the car swerved across the ice like a ballet dancer with a broken hip. Wheels spinning and traffic hardly moving, I just relaxed in the warm, cozy seat in the car, glad in the knowledge that the bike was nice and safe in the garage.
Yes, I am a wimp because I refused to ride to work in snow today, after it scared the poo out of me on Friday.

Took the day off - so rode to the NEC for the bike show ;-)
5min to get down my road (thats about 100 meters) as it was thick with snow, then all the other roads were fine - just easy on the brakes and the throttle. I was one of 18 bikes at the NEC all day apparently, and one of those had a side car on it! The vast majority were GS's too. No sports bikes at all (unless you count my ZZR).

terrible today. took 39 minutes
I dumped my car 3.5 miles from home last night to save being stuck in traffic on the A2 for hours and ran home the rest of the way towing a sledge I'd bought for the kids.
Today got up late and got two buses in and got here at 930, no problems. have the running kit if I need to run home.

It took me ten minutes extra prying much car off a wall, as i came round a corner at around 4 mph which was apparently 2 mph too fast and skidded off the road into a wall. Luckily i hit a green Wheelie bin which stopped any damage to car as Wheelie bin crumpled.
So I've finally found a use for the green bins woo hoo.

40 minutes for whats usually a 30 minute journey. Only because I was held up at temporary traffic lights for ages. I reckon tonight will be a problem again though.
I'm still in bed, late shift!
Train today. Freight thing broke down at Crewe and blocked the entrance to the station. With all the locos in the sidings it still took an hour and a half to shift it, and then the train to Lime Street was late as well. Took slightly under 4 hours in total:rolleyes:
