Yay or nay ?

i did have a few falls last year in the ice lol.

Cheers Ant

What happens if you break when the part of the tyres between the claws is in contact with the ice? Surely you'd slide.

And with the amount of snow we get I reckon these would start to shread your tyres due to lack of snow.

I think not...

i would check if there even legal in this country, as i know snow chains are only permitted in extreme weather

the_lone_wolf

Ridiculously expensive for what they are, and you'll likely destroy them the first time you hit treated roads

If you think you need snow chains make your own and try it, at the elephant we all made some and nobody used them, waste of time

hindle8907
30-11-10, 05:37 PM
maybe nay then,

ill just try to stay up right this year.

i know on treated roads they would be no use but last year it was quite bad and only seemed to be the motorways that was clear if i remember correctly around here.

Taxi to work and back would cost me around 40quid a day.
Car I don't have a licence it's on my list of thing to do.
Public transport is Darn Complicated 2 busses and two tarms will get me to work but will have to leave for work at like 5am

I'd just risk the sv. It's not too bad in the snow and the same with any vehicle park as close to a gritted road as possible to make it easier.

MisterTommyH
30-11-10, 09:23 PM
If i had the nerve for it (or more accurately the money to fix the damage caused) I reckon a ride out in the snow would be quite fun...

Could always just purchase a cheap p.o.s 125 to use on the snow to get to work? Light to pick up if dropped and not expensive to fix

Looks damn painful on those tyres.

barwel1992

make sure your boots have some decent tread so when the bike "does" slip you have a better chance of getting grip on ure feet to hold the bike up

Get the buses and tram...not like the snow will last for ever.

Stonesie
01-12-10, 12:21 PM
Good plan, all our busses are in the yard today because they cant get out and the majority of the drivers cant get through... It's my day off, which is a good thing because theres not a chance in hell of me taking the SV and the car's stuck...

Might see if the old CG125 will start, that could be my transport for the next few days.

IF I can get a bike out the back yard and down through three gates, it ain't icy or snowed in enough.

Today is not a good day! Can't see the Zzzrr, and the shed ramp has disappeared.

Well I only fell off the 125 once, good fun but most of my time was spent trying to help clueless cagers who think the throttle is a On/Off switch, then they usually blaim the car:rolleyes:

this snow is making things intresting, at the moment the sv is tucked up in the garage an the scooter drifting is imense its a fine balance of acc an rear brake to navigate corners with both feet down a right site to behold, a workmans exact works are you fooking crazy my reply hell yeaaaa as i slid past

BoomBoomBox
01-12-10, 04:11 PM
I had a Yamaha Aerox, tyres pretty much the same size as the SV, full grip, mega lean, knee sliders all the way. :)

Probably illegal, but you could always say you must have picked them up while you were riding!

Snow chains are only legal in the uk providing they don't damage the road surface and looking at the original post these are more like ice breaker chains than snow chains.BMW.s are single side arm and the buckles are on the open side so as the SV is double sided there is a chance they could foul the swing arm .
Snow chains will not keep you upright as they are designed for forward momentum so if you do start to go sideways they are not a lot of help

Have you just bolted a few hundred bolts into your tyre?
Amazing idea.

metalhead19
01-12-10, 10:46 PM
Seen that on another forum, looks like could be fun. Not sure how good it would be if you were to run out of snow and hit tarmac though

BoomBoomBox
01-12-10, 10:50 PM
Haha, thats a point!
I know a nail can insta-lower tyre pressure, can't imagine what they are like with bolts in 'em.

Their Kold Kutter ice screws. Not tried them myself, although I did make some studded tyres for my mountain bike, to give me something to ride during the 5-6 months I can't ride the SV. Put some screws through the tyre from the inside, ground off the points a bit and fitted tuffy tape.

If it is a necessity that you need your bike during winter fit a sidecar-----good stability and traction or are you to proud.
Take it off when the weather returns to normality for two wheels.

Life is so simple if you think about it.:)

Oh please fit a sidecar hindle, paint an apple logo on it, sure you would jump at putting one on then LOL ;0)

think the problem with a sidecar is mainly getting someone brave+stupid+unselfconcious enough to sit in it.. have a go in a sidecar racing outfit.. youl be wobbly walking for a week with your head pumped with adrenalin

personally id rather take the fall that have something so hideous bolted to suzy. thankfully the cage is fun enough to travel in on the ungritted roads

Just a couple of ' observations ' :
Colour - you'll never find it in the snow
Chair's on wrong side - you'd be hounded off the roads
M a n y years ago did the Elephant rally as passenger in/on Vincent/Steib outfit. Never been so cold or had so much fun. ( in more ways than one )
