View Full Version : World Cup Bid 2018 & 2022

So shame England didn't win the bid. I would've loved to watch games in good ol' MK. For those who don't know:

2018 Bid - England, Netherland, Spain/Portugal, and Russia who won it

2022 Bid - S.Korea, Australia, Japan, USA, and Qatar who won it.

To be honest, I thought Spain/Portugal would take it, largely because they're World/Euro champs, and they can hold more fans with their stadiums than anyone else. Seems like FIFA went for the 'develop a country'* theme again, hence Russia. Russia don't have the infrastructure yet, but it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Qatar won it, becuase USA had it in '94, Japan/S.Korea 2002, and Australia is just too far away for a world cup. Crud footy team, but I'm sure they'll splash out in a bigger style than Russia will.

*which is always a great thing and why not?

We never stood a chance... because other countries love to see England/UK fail... partly because England/UK are so convinced they are going to win.

For me, I could not care less, it would have cost considerably more than it would have brought and would have ended badly with lots of failed projects... as THATS what England/UK are good at.

prob didnt do us any favours that the midlands derby last night turned into world war 3.

I'm glad we didn't get it for a purely selfish reason.

Not having to deal with the matches and aftermath on a professional level.

I dislike football and nearly everything assosiated with it. It's not a sport any more.

Pete ;)

Welll everyone would have been so peed off if it did come here, not being able to get very far playing and all!

Besides, its unnecessary expense that the country can't afford to pay for, after all we have to cut back everything apart from 'happiness' surveys ;)

Did I mention I can't stand football, loada rubbish!

+1 IMHO all the winning bids are fixed, look how much money both Russia & Quatar have compared to Little Old England

At least we have the Olympic's

I read the Met are having trouble recruiting enough temp Police to cover the Olympics, and thats a peaceful event.

We'd have needed to draft in the the Army, Navy & Airforce if we had won the World Cup, hold on, we don't have anyone spare

FIFA want an easy life and a big profit so are going to give it to countrys where they can call the shots and don't have to worry about red tape. Russia and probably more so Quatar will bend over backwards to do whatever they want.

If FIFA say they want to demolish a village to build a 100,000 seater stadium then Russia and Quatar will have it done in no time, here not so much.

Also the authorities here are making cutbacks so don't want the extra work.

Only reason I wanted the world cup here as it's probably our only chance of qualifying.

i heard the england bid would've have generated a tidy sum. But as shown by the panarama documentary its how many coins to shove in their pockets that counts. Not even a thank you from sepp blatter for uncovering the cash for votes scandal.

Then again its the same moron that doesnt believe in goal line technology. Dinosaurs are extinct for a reason !

Dunno about that. The Gov't cuts to the Police have put an absolute freeze on recruitment, at least in GMP.

Some of us - bikers - have been given a gypsies warning that we'll be sent to London for the Olympics. Looking forward to that!

I think it's pretty much a given that police from all over the UK will be having leave cancelled for that month and shipped down to a nice dirty eTap hotel for a couple of weeks.

It's going to be a proper target for an attack too no doubt. Rather you than me.

Time for a nice UK bike trip if you ask me, as the rest of the country will be pretty quite I imagine unless your within 25 miles of the M25.

It would have probably earned the country a fair sum at the end of it.

I'm sure you will be sent to London to help out, I'm expecting to be roped in somewhere, maybe to let Police do another role.

I might get a hint next week at a management meeting

Australia is just too far away for a world cup.

Bollox. Not too far for cricket fans from the UK, so why too far for footy fans? Besides if you're going from New Zealand then it's only 3 hours on a plane.

Qatar - I heard on Radio 4 that it's 95% sand. With a population of 1m, how are they going to cope with 1 - 2m visitors, do they have an airport big enough? - and being a Muslim country are they going to sell beer?

What crap decisions. FIFA - a joke.

And how many people live in New Zealand? Australia is just far for a lot of countries. Much more money to be made in a footy world cup than a cricket world cup, and FIFA know that Qatar will prove a geographical advantage in potentially bringing in more fans. But who wouldn't rather go to Australia over Qatar anyway.

Qatar - I heard on Radio 4 that it's 95% sand. With a population of 1m, how are they going to cope with 1 - 2m visitors, do they have an airport big enough? - and being a Muslim country are they going to sell beer?

It probably is 95% sand. I don't even get people's fascination with places like Dubai. What's the big deal if you're oil rich and build a load of massive buildings and malls. I'd rather go somewhere like Turkey or Egypt. Nontheless, I'm sure Qatar will probably deliver, and aren't they doing that thing where they demolish the stadiums they build for the World Cup, and donate the material to third world countries. Bet that helped their case.

Also, I think the majority of muslim countries permit the sale of alcohol. Saudi, Kuwait, Iran, Libya, Pakistan and Bangladesh are the one's that don't to my knowledge.

I have a mate who lives in Qatar and he says you can drink in quite a lot of places but mostly large hotels and it's about 8 quid a pint!! I also think he said you have to have a special license to buy alcohol but I may have just imagined that.

EDIT: Why guess when I have Google (http://www.goseewrite.com/2010/12/world-cup-2022-drinking-guide-qatar/)
