After 4 months of waiting and only a measly 3x '89 NC30's coming up for sale in NZ (1st sold the day before I was going to buy it, 2nd was too expensive and 3rd time was lucky!) I am now the proud owner of a not-too-shabby 1989 Honda VFR400R. Booya! The front fairing is non-OE, but the quality and paintjob of the replacement is pretty good. Apart from that, I think it is pretty much original and with 25,000km on the clock, it is just run in!

Plan is to tidy it up, (it still has the original rubber brake hoses!) tune it up a little and then go post-classic racing in pre-89 class. I'm going to keep the same paintjob on the race fairings as I think it looks great!

A lot more than VFR's over in the UK! I paid $4k (NZD). Dealer was selling a minter for $6k and the fairly tatty trackbike went for $2.5-3k. If you convert the amount to pounds, (and at the moment the dollar is very strong) then it is quite expensive compared to the UK.

thats about minter prices in the UK.

Need to shame my mate into sorting his 400 out

That looks sweet. I always prefered that colour scheme - makes it look almost like an RC30. My daughter's was a UK spec one in those colours - I wrote it off for her

Thats a belter! It seems a shame to put that on the track! It'll only end in tears! :)

Yeah, but given the (lack of) number of bikes that came up for sale, I couldn't be picky! I have bought 3 months rego for it anyway, so can bomb about on the road for a bit. Also in NZ, it is MUCH easier to sell a race bike with tidy road fairings than just a racebike. You look on trademe and the same race only bikes come and go each week with the price dropping and dropping each time.

They look great, the simple twin round lights on a sports bike is as iconic a look as a single spot light on a naked, and sure to make a return to modern sports bikes in the near future, imo.

The VFR also has really nice all round proportions and despite it being boxy, the tail doesn't look too huge or too low, as they seem to on a lot of other sports bikes from the time.

I love those colours. The NC35's we have are better bikes than the NC30 but only by a gnats whisker, the NC30 is fantastic.

Nah the NC30 is better, NC35 may have USD forks but its slower (and more expensive).

It *is* better but there is no point arguing the point with someone who considers maximum power to be the be all and end all.

Mechanically and handling wise the NC35 is the better bike, but I have to admit to prefering the styling of the NC30. They remind me of the RC30s I've lusted after since they first appeared in the magazines - I so badly wanted one and very nearly bought one new with cash that I'd saved, but my ex-wife <spit> (then girlfriend) talked me into buying a house instead. A year down the line the recession hit hard and the house was worth £15,000 less than I paid for it, so bang went my £10K savings and I didn't have an RC30 to show for it. I've never forgiven her and never will.

It's all immaterial anyway. Class rules is pre-89 build year so even newer NC30s with cartridge forks are out let alone NC35s!

I will be getting 17" rear rims though for better choice of race/rain tyres and having a Ohlins rear shock built specifically. Unfortunatley pre-89 jr is up to 600cc and so since I'll be down on outright power, I want to build the sweetest handling NC30 ever!
