View Full Version : Maybe I won't be riding this winter... (Tyre issues - Pirelli Diablo Rosso)

Just been out for a ride to a friends house for the first time since the snow has cleared up on the Island and frightened myself. The roads are not icy here but very cold and the air temperature is quite low. I thought it would be fine and rode normally - I now realise I've probably got the completely wrong tyres for the weather. My bike has Pirelli Diablo Rosso's fitted (I haven't had it long and it came with them) Every slight bump in the road caused the front and rear of the bike to twitch and slide outwards, scaring the living daylights out of me - and because of a newfound problem with selecting 3rd and it... not selecting it, when I let the clutch out engine braking caused the front to completely slide out left and right. Twice. After 3 miles, the tyres were still cold when I got home.

Any suggestions for tyres that warm up quicker in the cold or are more suited to this weather? A sports touring type? For when I have the money to take it to a garage and get them fitted of course.

Check your pressures, doesn't sound normal.

And more generally,in these temperatures there wont be much reliable grip so its wise to ride accordingly, whatever tyres you are on.

Ive got the same tyres. Great in the summer, shoite in the colder conditions. The lack of grip made me come off last year. Just dont think they are designed for the colder conditions.

Yeah, that's what I've put it down to - that and the fact that my Dad just came in from work and happily explained that the 'wetness' I thought I saw on the road was infact ice... there were ice warnings apparently:-dd

I was only going about 25MPH everywhere anyway, it's 30 all the way to my mate's house and back and I'm naturally careful as it's my first big bike and still getting used to it.

I have heard the same about those tires from lots of sources, beware an st has better cut for the wet but I found that a stickier tire works better on an sv in the cold

I use dunlop qualifiers (d209) also super sport bias tyres and at these temperatures i can ride to work at 80mph for 30 mins on the motorway then burnout up the road into work and they are still stone cold. They also have very poor grip i just tend to poodle round bends this time of year and easy on the downshift (give it a blip). Other than that its just avoiding drains. It helps you learn the line of least resistance well too.

Sounds more like black ice- Caught me out last year -thought I had oil on rear tyre as it was spinning up and trying to overtake the front. Parked up the bike to check it out - got off and promptly fell over on slippy surface which looked absolutely fine. Still managed to get off the side road onto salted roads at about 5mph.

I personally found the Rosso warmed up a lot quicker than the Corsas I had fitted before. AS others have said, it is more likely the ice on the roads than the tyre

Just ride it. You're not on a race track. Tyres do not warm up riding normally at this time of year. Get a grip (get it ?)

If conditions are as bad as that use the common sense you were born with and find an alternative form of transport-----Heaven is full of would be heroes. There is no shame in living to fight another day,why risk your life to be macho?
You don't have to take advice from anybody on here as some of what has been said is just down right stupidity:confused:even if it is in jest, and all I can say is I am still riding motorbikes after 45years,so work it out for yourself.

Much better to be safe than sorry
