So apparently the DD for my bike insurance bounced and hastings sent me a letter giving 7 days for payment.
Unfortunatly we have a shared mailbox (3 properties 1 mail box) and only got the letter (dated 19th nov) today from the neighbour who picked it up by accident and has been meaning to drop it by for a while....

Phoned them up (they have home and mobile numbers for me but never called me) and they said policy was cancled on 7th and they will not re-instate it but want full payment anyway...

Do I have any options here at all or am I screwed? I have nowhere off road to park this and live nextdoor to a police station, am at work and need to get home, and can't afford to get any insurance until 18th....HELP!!!

By illegally intercepting your mail, your neighbour has caused you to be out of pocket.

I suggest that you would be in your rights to expect him to pay the rest of the policy off.

Might teach him to be less lazy in future.

Although I would probably also be looking to move house if that course of action was followed...

Put it in as a complaint due to extenuating circumstances

You'll eventually get to speak to someone who can do something about it, can't see why they wouldn't reinstate it

Can't see why they wouldn't reinstate it

So that they still get the money without having to risk the cover.

Thanks for the advice as usual :)
Phoned up and asked to speak to a manager and make a complaint, explained situation so he spoke to cancelations and renewals team.

Result is as long as I signed onto a new policy they waived the cancelation fee (£55) and dropped the outstanding payment of £35 (so I got 3 weeks free insurance) AND a £16 refund, then put on a new identical policy except the premium has dropped so I'm now paying £11 a month for 11months instead of £35 per for 6 0_o.

RESULT!

Thanks guys and thanks Hastings =p

Ive been with Hastings for bike insurance for many years and always found them to be OK.Not been quite the cheapest recently but not so different as to warrant losing a decent service.

Surely with a new policy you loose the year NCD you had been building up before they cancelled it?

Sod paying by DD, pay it in a lump sum.

I've heard to many stories now where a DD has failed etc and people then get bummed for driving/riding without insurance.

Glad you got it sorted... See this sort of thing almost every day at work hence the complaint advice ;)

2 years NCD also carried over (Would have been 5 if a theft wasn't counted as a fault claim thieving bar stewards!)

Would pay in full but not got the wonga at the moment :(

I would hold back on the good news part of this next time you see your neighbour.

Spin a yarn about being stopped by a copper from the nearby nick and how you were lucky to get off with just being warned about your lack of insurance.

Then, maybe, they will be more prompt at delivering mail they carelessly picked up in error...

glad they sorted it for you...

Pretty good out come :) pleased that you didn't get screwed over or pulled by the cops when you didn't know about it.
