depends where you are from your nearest exchange doesnt it?


I get about 3-5 meg here at home.. when my provider says speeds of up to 10meg on my premium contract .. but tests show my street most you can get anyway is 4.5


go to my mums.. on the door of the local exchange and I can get 10 meg all day every day ..



I used ot only get 1.5 meg but moved the modem thingy from an extension socket upstairs to the main line in which is in the lounge. (bit unsightly for my ocd but hey) plug it in the engineers socket behind the front plate .. went up to 3 meg..


then I got a new front plate from e bay an i bell or summat ... with built in filter and now get the 3.5 meg.


when I go to Matt SV in southampton he can download on i player a 30 min programme in seconds.. takes me about 40 mins here.. might as well bloomin watch it.!


of course extension sockets will decrease it.. and having no in line filter will too..

I used to get 2000/256 but doubled it to 4500/500 by removing all old cabling in the house, connecting the router directly to the line, even removing the phone, ring capacitor etc. I cant use the home phone, but dont care as the mobile is cheaper anyway.

The thing that makes me laugh is that unless you've got cable, all broadband comes via BT infrastructure and broadband suppliers just buy bandwidth from their network and sell it on to you, like Gas and Electricity suppliers but with some gubbins at their end which does matter (servers).

Different companies promising amazing broadband is like different gas suppliers saying their gas will heat your house faster or electric companies saying you'll get brighter bulbs. How you're wired to the BT exchange network is the limiting factor, hopefully that will be rebuilt in the next few years to fibre, I can't remember the timescale.

You will only download at 200kbps etc because it depends how many people are downloading the same file e.g there might be 50 people all downloading the same file and people put upload limits on their comps because if somones taking all your upload speed itll slow your download speed, hope this makes sense.

Network speeds have nothing to do with computer systems or whether there are multiple downloads/uploads etc. Network speeds are a commercial decision of what the network provider is willing to provide and the customer willing to pay.

Also you don't pay for x Mbit in speed, you pay for x Mbit of bandwidth and basic definition of bandwidth is the theoretical maximum speed you can achieve under prefect circumstances.

Its also worth noting that you do not have dedicated bandwidth to your home network, all domestic broadband packages have contention, so on you have a set amount of bandwidth shared between 20-50 other users, If everyone on BT for instance was to download a file at the exact same time the network would come falling down. Its a bit like banks not having enough cash for everyone to take out at the same time.

The more resources made available to serve the downloads, the less likely the chances of the users being aware of any impact to service. It's a trade off between cost and speed.

The decisions regarding speed are down to the end users not the network, you have an option to get a dedicated Internet connection but 50 Meg is 13k a year, webites could give everyone more bandwidth an ensure there was no adverse on service at peak times but how many users are willing to pay to use facebook or the BBC news website

Also there isn't an owner of the Internet, it's many thousands of private companies that distribute traffic and have peering agreements with neighboring network owners
