View Full Version : Pointless thread
Don't get me wrong, I like the sound of her voice and her version of Elton John's song, but do you orger's think that shifting it from the male persona to the female persona (and view point) changes its message or perhaps works as a reflection of our changing views on society today?

It's quite bad. I'm not a huge Elton John fan but appreciate his stuff. The bit when she says "If I was a sculptor, but then again no" makes me cringe
The male to female thing doesn't make much difference to the meaning for me
Good man Darren..at least after 14 views you had the nerve to add something. There is no right or wrong answer, just a points of view. Just listenint to KT Tunstall...she' gorgeous...

TBH mate, havent got a clue what you're asking, i like the song and her, dont really get the message you think might be there .
Just listen to it for what it is, a cover version of a good song.
Im not a Elton Jon fan btw, respect his music but cant stand him.
I like it, it's a cover and not trying to accurately emulate the original. What you have to ask is this - if this had been the original version, would you be saying Elton John had wrecked it and made it too camp?
Btw - I hate Greg James for being her bloke. She's cute in a non-perfect normal girl next door way - I like that. Perfection is over-rated, I know because I've had to live with my own for far too long now :-)
I can't access the link is it Susan Boyal?
I'm only going on what Lozzo describes as the girl next door and what I percieve his tastes to be:D

Something important has changed in the context of this song...
Elton sings it in a boy to boy context :puker:
I believe that a lot of Elton's love songs were based on experiences and this one was written for his boyfriend of the day. That is the one thing that I couldn't abide with the big fairy doing love songs.
Ellie sings it in what seems a girl to boy context.
Ellie's version gets the nod because it makes sense.
Yeh but Bernie taupin wrote this song not Elton John.
Having not heard either in full, I hit up the youtube links to see - I think I prefer the reimagining to the original.

I don't know what I was on about either - I really was very...very...very drunk last night caused by my raging thirst...:santa:

I like it - very differnt from the original which isn't always a bad thing when doing a cover version.
Carrying on this theme though - back in the early 80's there was a very cheesy ballad sung by Charlene called "Never Been To Me"; however, for those of you old enough to remember it, did you know that it was originally written from a man's perspective?
I've put links to both below - see which you prefer.

Gets my vote for most homophobic post yet.
Anyway, the lyrics were by Bernie Taupin and they were about Maxine Feibelman, the woman he was courting and subsequently married.
Elton John only wrote the music, Taupin the lyrics. Never mind tho, it's just one of the most well know collaborations in modern music.

Brave song to cover and I think she does it brilliantly.

I think she's taken a well known song and put her edge to it, as with everything, there'll be lovers and haters (biffy clyro/matt cardle for example). I'm personally not a fan of Elton John, however I think that Ellie has done the song justice and also helped make it accessable to a younger audience, which is never a bad thing!
Has she just sang over some elses music of did she record the music too?

Me too :-dd
Downloaded the track off itunes today, how down with the kids is that ???
I always thought it was about a parent singing to their newborn child.
"how wonderful life is, now you're in the world".
No?
Just me then.
Oh yeh and this bit 'it's a little bit funny, this feeling inside' just before their born.
