I picked up my winter project from my brother yesterday :) his old Yam DT125

http://i52.tinypic.com/208fvw3.jpg

I say old, its only done 3,700 miles! Its an '89 model and hasnt moved since about '92, keys were last seen circa 1995

1st things 1st i've applied for a V5 form and tomorrow i'll start looking for a new ignition barrel and filler cap with keys. think i'll end up with 2 different keys for ignition and filling up but ah well. Will I FUBAR the tank if I drill out the existing cap?

Then i'll start stripping it down. Lets see whats survived 18 years of neglect :)

Looking past the yellow leg warmers on the forks, I couldnt believe the condition when I 1st saw it. hardly any marks on the plastics, zero signs of rust and its quite clean too! Little air in the tyres and a squirt of brake cleaner on the pads and she rolled on the trailer like a good un :)

I learned to ride on a KE100 when I was 9 and got a brand new KX250 off my dad in '97 so I've always had a soft spot for 2 stroke crossers

Just out of curiosity what did that cost?
How much work you expecting?

sv4me
01-01-11, 05:52 PM
Nothing, nowt, nada, zip, bupkis mate \\:D/ it was my brothers bike for going to college on, hes coming up 40 soon! The place its been stored at all these years is being sold so I took it away for him cause i'm a nice guy like that ;)

I'm thinking a fair bit! Apart from the obvious, things like the headstock bearings, fuel lines, all the gaskets will probably need replacing. Tyres will pretty much be certain to have perished but i'll give them a try 1st

I'm going to strip it and price everything up before I buy anything. So I know exactly what i'm letting myself in for!

Jammy So nd so!

It'll be a sin to break it, I'd take the chassis vin you may hit lucky with a Yam dealer

sv4me
01-01-11, 06:10 PM
Neh I won't be breaking it, this little babys taking me round wales and the lakes :D

Theres a salvage place down the road from me and theres always eBay. Parts for these should be dime a dozen. Im hoping! All I need is for the garage to be warmer than the 2° it is now and I can get started

Nice, it doesn't look like it'll need too much at all. If it's not going to be left parked anywhere secluded, I wouldn't worry too much about a lockable filler cap. Keep us up to date on progress.

Little update, left work early and commenced stripping (the bike ) so the DT now looks like this

http://i53.tinypic.com/311mk3p.jpg

Tank is on the bench ready to have the filler cap drilled out. I expect to lose at least 1/2 a finger in the process. I may end up sticking a chisel in the lock and hitting it with a big mallet not decided yet. The smell of 20yr old petrol is :puker: too

Lol @ the size of the battery :p and the brakes are hmmm furry. Pistons are well and truly stuck so will be getting introduced to my friend mr compressor. i'll see how far I can fire them across the yard :)

http://i51.tinypic.com/nmhxrp.jpg http://i55.tinypic.com/apbrqq.jpg http://i54.tinypic.com/28kom0o.jpg

Popping into the salvage yard tomorrow to see if I can pick up a new ignition barrel without looking too much like a bike thief

I have only just seen this thread this evening. Before you drill out the filler cap
Have a word with a local locksmith. I bought my SV without a key and I was able to
take my ignition to them and they were able to identify what key was needed from the
lock itself and cut me two new keys all for a tenner!!!! The ignition key has a complete
set of tumblers and the tank or helmet locks have a few of the same tumblers but not all.
So you need to take the ignition in as getting the right keys for the ignition will
ensure the tank etc can be opened but not vice versa. This is assuming that the locks haven't
been swapped previously.
Hope this helps and saves your damaged fingers!

Youll find loads of parts for that on ebay.

Dont forget to search for TZR parts too as it was pretty much the same bike when it comes to the parts.

Thanks I took your advice and went to see a few today. 1 flatly refused to try, 1 quoted £60 for 1 key :smt103 then the guy in Stanleys said yeah no prob £25 come pick them up saturday

Result :D and didnt even lose a body part in the process

Speedplay that looks good I may be pinching that idea ;) once i've got it running and had a few outings on it i.e got the crashing out my system, ill think about tarting it up a bit with acerbis front mudguard/handguards and maybe a respray. The 80s colour scheme is offensive to my eyes

I've spent £100 not including the new keys and thats got me tons of new stuff to go on, chop chop mr postman :smt071

Dont forget the cr250 front end conversion ;)

I quite like the retro blue though.

It is what it is at the end of the day.

Would be a shame to chop it about too much as its in great nick.

Mine was stolen recovered so needed a bit done to it.

Well done on the key always worth a punt. That all the dealer did with mine ordered me a new key off the barrel code

Don't encourage me :-$ I was reading up some lads supermoto modification thinking theres an idea if ever I fancy a change. Not even got it started yet!

I know what you mean you don't see many like it around in that condition. Plus with the passes in the lakes i've got in mind a new paintjob would last about 5 minutes :smt103

I used the fron from a cagiva 125, with a dep rear from a yz 125 :)

Sounded ace :D

sv4me
06-01-11, 10:06 PM
I'm just wondering if it being an '89 model whether its got a restricted pipe or not? Most do seem to favour DEP

If I can get it sounding anything like my honda cr i'll be happy. The ramblers will love that :smt039

speedplay
06-01-11, 10:10 PM
The restriction was in the clocks of the later ones and in the lower exhaust of the earlier ones.

Shame I didnt know you were getting this a couple of weeks ago as I gave someone the powervalve motor and all the bits for the DT...

sv4me
06-01-11, 10:31 PM
Bugger :(

Hmm so I could go fishing for the offending article and derestrict the standard exhaust. Or get a shiny DEP end can for that out of control chainsaw sound. I know which 1 i'd prefer :)

Quick update

Been busy with work but managed to do a couple of jobs earlier today. I've overhauled the front caliper, compressed air worked but not in the way i'd hoped. Piston just came out with a loud pop rather than resembling a mortar :( new pads are in, just need to find my bleeding kit and that'll be the front done

The carb was taken off a while ago and when it came to looking inside the bowl for the gunge :-k none to be found. The slides move nicely and the throttle feels ok at the bars so screw it, the carb is now back on and i'm hoping it'll be reet!

The main fun and games i've been having is with the tank. After trying the new key 100x and not getting any joy, I threatened it with the drill and miraculously it turned. The filler cap was not for budging though, rusted shut! Stuck the oil filter wrench over the top and off it popped.

http://i52.tinypic.com/10369hx.jpg

Drained the fuel which looked more like red diesel to me

http://i55.tinypic.com/29e4xow.jpg

Stared down into the pit of doom

http://i51.tinypic.com/xg9ruv.jpg

I shook it like a polaroid picture (and this came out)

http://i52.tinypic.com/20u21y8.jpg

Not good. I know what this calls for, jumped in the car and off to Tescos. Have it on good authority that vinegar will bring my tank back to life so I picked up some

http://i55.tinypic.com/nfk1zr.jpg

Ok 15 bottles. 13p each! :o I told the girl behind the checkout I was addicted to fish and chips.

Thats all gone in the tank about an hour ago, along with a few nuts and bolts to help scrape some of the worst of the rust off. Will see the results this time tomorrow.

New plug and air filter have gone in and new battery is now on charge, really hoping that it'll cough and splutter into life tomorrow :D

A cheaper way to remove the rust from that tank would have been Cheapo Cola. Just yer run of the mill Tesco Value rubbish Cola is fine. It contains phosphoric acid, which does a good job of eating loose light rust away. You only need to buy about 5 big bottles of the stuff to fill a DTR tank and it does a better job than vinegar.

sv4me
16-01-11, 10:04 PM
Ah Lozzo, have you not seen that episode of mythbusters where they said coke wont shift serious rust? Does have phosphoric acid in but not enough of it. Besides the vinegar cost me the bank busting amount of £1.95 ;)

Anyway here are the results, before and after

http://i54.tinypic.com/2prwlzs.jpg

http://i51.tinypic.com/1zyygoz.jpg

Fairly pleased with the results, I can see metal at least :) but theres still too much rust just to get off with thinners. Down the sides is still pretty bad. Glad I tried the vinegar but think i'll take the advice of my dads mate, has restored a few old cars and recommended marine clean and metal ready. A 2 stage process that removes grime and then should eat the rust and leave nice shiny metal

Will do that but in the meantime, decided im going to save the bodywork and replace all of it with old stuff I can source locally or off ebay. So in 6 days time I should have a decent tank off eBay ready for respraying. For £11! Gotta love eBay

I seen that episode of mythbusters, every scenario they tested coke in, the equivalent cleaner performed much better, which surprised me as I had heard all the things it was supposed to work well on.

Anyway, good work so far, keep it up :)

Marine clean does work, its what is recommended for prep to PST 10 tank seal. I think it takes 2 days to fully work.

I think my local powercoaters uses it on all metals prior to coating.

Getting there mate!

Thanks guys, and andy thanks for vouching for the marine stuff. i've just ordered 4 litres of the stuff so hope it works :p

I've got a mad week at work and then i'm off on my jollies for a week so will be slow progress for a little while. Infact just realised, i'll have to bid on that tank from the ski slopes

Thanks for the link mate, looking forward to getting baked off the fumes :thumright:
