The inmates have rioted and set the place on fire-i'd be given them tents once things have settled and make them sleep in them-no money for any rebuild until the costs were recouped from the saving from no tv and feeding them minimum nutritional food.

The luxury of HMP Fords lax security
All because they were asked for breath samples
I'm inclined to say that all of the prisoners have breached the trust that meant they were moved to an open prison, and should be moved to more secure accomodation until they can regain that trust...

Now I have to say that I disagree with this comment very, very strongly and I think that it is rather insensitive of you to even suggest it, whether you were joking or not.
Have you no care about the poor human being who would have to go there afterwards and clean up the mess?
Any bullets that miss or go through the scumbags are going to blast chunks out of the concrete and that is going to take some what more than a little coat of render to fix. It would look awful after that with patches and repairs. An earth bank is so much better and if you get the tykes to dig their own pits first, it halves the effort of disposal of corpses.
You just don't think these things through do you! ;)

This is a question for the moderate fence sitting liberals here (Yes, me really), if Prison is such a deterrent, why are they filled up with offenders? I do believe that we need a Justice system, but is the prison system really working? Once inside, are Prisoners offered education, giving retraining and therapy to make them more socially acceptable?
Hypothetically speaking , I could break the law occasionally when I am in a hurry, I may do thirty five in a thirty zone if the roads are empty. This is breaking the law and if I am honest I see it as a little law that is not very important. Maybe this is the problem, the Law is considered optional and as a result is too soft on law breakers.
Yet, I have a friend who has been to prison, I also dumped an ex-partner when he facing being sent to prison. My friend I see as a nice decent honest type, he served his time and has no intentions of going back. I can forgive him his misdemeanor. However my Ex was guilty of harming someone else who had no means of fighting back and no matter what, I do not believe that prison can change that in him. I will never forgive him, despite him having now served his time. Is this justice at work here?
Does the prison system punish at a level suitable to the crime or is it an act of vengeance carried out by the state against those who will never be any better? I will admit that I am confused and do not know what to think. All I can say is that I am fully opposed to the death penalty, but worry at the cost to public funds to keep people locked up for so many years?
If criminals have failed to observe the human rights of the people they committed the crime against, should they expect to still have human rights when they are caught? Is society granting them human rights just a way of us appearing to be moral and just, when in fact locking some one in a small room for years an abuse too?
What are the true views of folks on here, I am actually interested?

The law only protects those with nothing to lose. If you are a decent and generally law abiding person it is not on your side.
Look at the fine you would get for protecting your property, not counting any imprisonment, you would spend longer earning the money to pay the fine than the scrote would spend inside for the crime itself.
I would prefer the law to be on my side if I were to do something which is morally correct, like shoot or batter a burglar or thief. As it is, you would be expected to place yourself in great danger to stop the offence from being committed and then use "reasonable force". Pah, you should be able to use a heavy machine gun if it may save you the risk of breaking a nail, or a sweat.
The whole system has gone to b*llocks.

My old housemate and I decided that if we ever caught anyone trying to nick our bikes, the police would never find his body. We figured no body = no crime.
To answer Auntie Jayne's question my view on what prison should be :-
Take away the criminal's freedom as a punishment.
Educate the criminal in the rights and wrongs.
Protect society from the criminal by taking him/her out of circulation.
I feel that prison is too cushy. I'd like to see it include no tv, or radio, no games room. It needs to be a greater deterent. And I bit of serious work (40hrs) that supports them whilst they're in there, or at least contributes to society.
For the education aspect I'd like to see the prison's do away with the soft vocational courses. Ideally educate almost to the extent of brainwashing that crime is wrong, and also educate a trade into criminals.
No.3 is pretty self explanitory but I'd like to see the 3 strikes and you're banged up for life introduced across the board for all violent crime, and burglary. Let's face it, if you ain't cured after two visits then to protect society...

I agree with the vocational, they are 'non' courses to an extent. The brainwashing is too far and a bit '1984'
3 strikes is used in some US states, but it includes the very minor and petty things aswel as the major things

I really don't know what the answer is, and to be honest, I don't get paid enough to think too hard about it.
One thing I do know is that most of the people I will deal with (read, put to the court) throughout my career will be repeat/habitual offenders. How we, as a society, cure this, I don't know, and to be honest, I'm not sure we will ever find the perfect answer to this!

We could transport them to the colonies.
In fact why not send the crims to Pakistan as a substitute for foriegn aid?

I know that offenders are sent to prison as a punishment not for punishment so when they get there they have a better quality of life than a lot of people.
How many pensioners do you know that struggle to survive as they can't afford to put heating on full in the weather, don't eat properly and don't own a huge tv?
These criminals have 3 meals a day, tv and probably Sky, hot water and heating. take away the luxuries and make it a life of punishment for them so they wont want to go back.

Best of both worlds, spend the money you save on heating and good food on providing good education for them.
