View Full Version : New Zealand Landscapes *Image Heavy*
I'm currently sifting through my 1500+ shots of New Zealand and trying to sort them all out! I've done a selection here to whet the apetite for what is a beautiful part of the world. Really missing it now I'm back!
If you like them, you can view the rest of the gallery at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43730823@N08/sets/72157625607864197/

Feel free to critique any, I'm using some new lenses and filters and I'm pretty pleased with the way that most have turned out. I've got a lot of similar shots on my HD but as I dont have a pro flickr account yet, I'm limited with the number I can publish. Still have about another 600 to get through!
I should mention that aside from some PS work, the water colours are actually genuinely that colour. Its unbelievable until you actually see it. Its everywhere, and a feature of glacial water. You start taking it for granted after a couple of weeks.

brilliant pic, crying out for a canoe-did you travel up the road on the rh side?
Yeah, this is actually towards the hydro station on the way to Cromwell. There was some guys who had just finished Canoeing on there, and I decided to follow a track down the side of the river. I left the missus up in the van and told her I was going to be a couple of minutes. About 25 minutes later, I emerged from the other end of the track after getting sidetracked by the colour of the water!
I love the one of the waterfall...
Stunning shots. :)

You're getting the hang of that camera aren't you Rob!
Stunning pics, NZ is my dream holiday on a bike.

Is the plan.
Pete ;)
Pete,
Its an amazing place, strangely enough I saw that same site before I went! When on the road however, I rarely saw a VFR. Most were touring on hired DL650s. Aside from the odd generic hog, the most popular bikes I saw were SV1000s and 80's/90's Ducati's.
Feel free to critique any
Ok let me just put my critic hat on :smt114 your pictures are cooler than penguin p!ss :D loving your work
Is it just a hobby of yours or are you a bit more serious than that? 7 and 8 look very professional, i'd pay to have 7 turned into a big canvas for our wall :)
+1 on the bike trip to NZ, on my to do list!
It is a hobby, and will probably stay that way as unless I turn to Weddings (which i'm doing later this year) then I wont be able to pay the bills.
If you are interested in getting a canvas, then I do know of a place where I can get canvases for a good price. It all depends on what size. For example, a 40x30 Canvas would be somewhere in the region of £110 printed. A poster the same size is about £50 but then you need to frame it!

I've considered going down to NZ a few times, but I'd really need a month off to see all the interesting bits and dive the Poor Knights. Not much chance of that happening this year.
I like number 8, but I'd crop the left hand side a bit, maybe even make a square composition out of it.
Just my thoughts,
Keith.

Number 8 is defo my favourite, and although I can see where Keith is coming from, I like it as is. Stunning!
My Dad is a Kiwi so I have dual nationality. I applied for my NZ passport last year and got it and new everytime I see photos like this I just WANT TO GO!!!!!!

Wow, they're a bit special Rob, ever thought of selling your stuff through picture agencies ?
Rob... WOW !
you should sell them to the NZ holiday web sites :0)
To be honest, no because when I go onto Flickr, I always see so many which are stunning so mine dont stand out as different.
Saying that, some of the brochures out there have pretty boring photos which dont necessarily sell their product that well.
Stonking Rob! You're wasted!

Rob, what filter did you use to do the slow shutter jobbie on the waterfall? I always over expose.
question... is this near a townnship call Cheviot about 100km north of Christchurch?
as my gs550es chain snapped there. Very friendly people :0)

I used a LCW 10 Stop filter which I found outstanding. Its not cheap but its cheaper than B&W or the Lee Big Stopper which both seem to have a strong colour cast to them.
The LCW has a slightly blue cast but its only very slight and is easily adjustable in PP. I only just bought it before going away so much of it was experimentation but I think it really worked in that setting. In some other photos however, it wasnt as effective. I tried it elsewhere on rivers and found the wind made too much of a mess of the foliage to get a perfect result.
Richie, no thats actually the North Island, however I cant remember whether it was near Rotorua or actually in the Bay of Islands. The scenery in parts was very British, either like the Dales/Cumbria or rugged like Scotland.

Great photos Rob
As for doing weddings as a photographer my Dad used to do it as a full time job for over 20years or more.
Even with commercial work he had to give it up, and a lot of his friends in the business had hard times, lots of stress, nervous breakdowns etc, just trying to make ends meet. He looks back and is glad he gave it up. We never saw him on Saturdays, because he was always doing weddings!
Keep it as a hobby & just do weddings for friends & family, or sell your work, its good enough
Excellent photos. It can be pretty magical down here, and once you're out of the larger cities/towns there's not a lot of traffic around either.
Just remember that it's 100k max speed on the open road, and watch out for the speed cameras!

WOW!!!! Those pics are flippin amazing! I went to traveling through New Zealand last year and my pics never do it justice. yours do, well done Rob
Some very nice compositions Rob though colour looks a bit off/overdone on some on my calibrated monitor. If they look ok on your monitor maybe you need a better monitor that can be calibrated? Where these shot in RAW?
Yeah they are shot in Raw, and no my monitor hasn't been calibrated yet. I'm borrowing one to see how far out it is.

Very nice pics Rob - Did you come Wellington way?
Errr..... no mate, I didnt. Didnt get that far south in the North unfortunately and I ran out of time!
Beautiful photos! The landscape looks amazing.
I bet it would be amazing to travel through by bike.
Melody, it would be amazing by bike. Theres so many good roads with excellent surfaces and no cars, I'd love to do it myself. Maybe one day...........
