View Full Version : Wisdom Teeth

Last year at a dental checkup (I hadn't had a checkup for a long, long time prior) my dentist informed me that all 4 of my wisdom teeth were emerging.

The left upper and lower were erupting, the right side were not quite there.

He suggested I have all 4 removed on the NHS to prevent any future problems.

Appointment came through and clashed with a work thing, so I cancelled and forgot all about it. I was a little relieved to be honest!

The last week I have had a seriously painful ulcer which looks/feels like its on the side of my gum by the upper left wisdom tooth! :( I cant close my mouth fully as it feels like its catching something. Complete nightmare! Im literally starving.

Now I'm wondering if this is just coincidence or if they really are causing a problem now - ie if it IS the cause of the ulcer? Or is it just "chance" it decided to grow there? I'm guessing they wont do the procedure until the ulcer is gone?

I'm chasing my appointment tomorrow to get them removed but I'm absolutely shi*ing a brick about this...can I request to be put out completely for the procedure?

Break my arm, no problems. Teeth pain... :puker:

Do they reallllllllly hurt, because if its just an annoyance I'd leave em be. My dentist thought that my mouth was not big enough to have wisdom teeth, and said many years ago, I'd most likely need them pulling. I've still got all four, and they have given me annoyance whilst coming through, one or two catch slightly on the inside of my mouth, one of them has a flappy bit of gum over it, and all four are not 'square'.....but they are through now, and don't bother me one bit.

Right side, no pain at all (not erupted yet I think)

Left side, slight ache when they first came through, nothing til this ulcer.

Im reading about various "conditions" which may attribute the ulcer as a result of the wisdom tooth/teeth, which is why i'm panicking - if I dont get them out they'll keep giving me gip.

But Im literally terrified of the dentist :( I wonder if the NHS will give you the choice to be knocked out?

My bottom wisdon teeth are coming through 'sideways' so the biting surface is up against the side of the molars. The dentist said they would have to be chopped out in chunks under general anaesthetic  So they will do it under general if they have to and would have thought they would if it was your preference but dont know for sure.

i had 2 nr wisdom teeth impacting (growing in squint) and were causing grieff. one cracked on the way through and general eating/sugar etc got trapped under the gum and rotted the tooth away over time. i ended up getting 3 of them removed under general anaethestic. if there getting sore, i'd suggest just getting a referal to get them out. the pain for maybe a week after the op will be way less than recurring pain for potentially years

hehehe-its horrible mate-get ko'd, that way when you wake up you'll still be out it and go back to sleep when you get home-mine got infected and i woke up with a face like a rugby ball, ended up getting four jags through the infected part which was a relief , can recollect him pulling it out and the most stinky smell ever(i've lambed sheep before who have had the lamb dead and rotting inside them for weeks but this was something else). When the jags wore off i was lying on the floor with my head in my mums hands crying like a baby wanting an ambulance -big poofta-ah well enjoy buddy:smt039

I'll find out tomorrow if I can asked to be KO'ed.

Well, I have to get another appointment first. Wonder how many years that'll take.

Been told 48hrs of no cig's as well, no sucking of any kind....maybe a good time to give up?! Knowing me I'll end up trying to snort the cig through my nose or summat.

EDIT: That last bit made me sound like a bit of a druggy, I;m not <.<

try and see if you've got a dental hospital near you-they patients for the newbies to practise on and you've a better chance of getting an anestist(you know what i mean) at them.

A mate of mine had to have his removed because they grew out wonky and were cutting into his cheeks.

My top ones have just finished coming through now and my bottom ones are emerging through the gum nice and straight :)

Apart from occasional toothache I've had no bad symptoms. Just hope they don't do the same as yours did husky, does sound painful!

Um...I dont know what's worse, the thought of an inexperienced dentist hacking away while I'm KO'ed or an experieced one while Im awake!

If you're worried about having your wisdom teeth out, then don't. I can tell you all about what I've had done to my teeth, it'd make your hair stand on end and put you off going to the dentist for ever :smt103

But before my big tooth operation,I had one wisdom tooth out and another which was emerging underneath another, no pain no drama, just had it done under a general anesthetic.

If you're not sure, then go and see another dentist for a 2nd opinion

If all this turns out to be not wisdom tooth related then I will probably chicken out.

One thing that also worries me is since this ulcer has appeared, my bite has changed. Although I can only clamp my teeth fully shut right now by pulling my left cheek out, when I do it feels way out.

My back teeth on both sides are coming in contact with each other much sooner then they did before. I'm not sure how this is possible, and definately only since this ulcer came along. It feels as though if I squeeze my teeth shut my back ones are being pushed back into the gum, and after I release it feels as though they are almost readjusting themselves again. Sounds crazy I kniw but that's the only way I can describe it. Can't say I've felt anything like this ever before. Feeling is more so on the left side (same as ulcer) than the right, but definately on both sides.

I do need to see the dentist for peace of mind. Roll on tomorrow.

I was continually getting impaction - gums swelling over wisdom teeth etc. A lot of time was simply caused by a cut to the gum area by a crisp etc. However having been to the dentist recently they informed me both top ones needed extracting.

At first i was worried etc. However I knew that they needed to be taken out as one was rotting. Removal was far easier than I thought. The worst part was having the injections.....but after that......easy.

Not to alarm you, but you feel nothing.......all I can really say is the sound isn't good - like cracking a chicken wing. But other than that I think they are not too bad. The dentist did however say to me after - "At least I didn't have my knee on your chest wrenching them out".

In your case, if you need four taken out, then deffo go for full sedation. But if only one or two.....local is fine. As for after care.....people worry about "dry socket" a lot, but having chatted to a few people at work they said they smoked after a couple of hours of being out....but just smoked very light puffs and took twice as long...my boss said he kept a bottle of water with him, as soon as he finished a cig, would rinse his mouth.

Hope it all goes ok. Sure you will be fine. Paracetamol, Ibruprofen and Codein as a mix will be your best friend for first 12 hours. After that I just get annoyed when food gets stuck in the "hole" lol. :-D

Cheers Drew.

If the dentist starts climbling on top of me I think I'll pass out, who needs to be sedated!

Very true. Whilst they were waiting for my anathestic to kick in....my dentist was called next door to a patient that had been there having wisdom teeth removed for one and a half hours because.......

On second thoughts you really don't want to hear the rest. :-D

I had all mine out years ago, 1987, they were all impacted, and painful, simple job in the hozzie overnight, general anaesthetic, didn't feel a thing.

Well I called them today and they said they'd get me on the next available booking as Iv been waiting so long.

Only issue is my original referral was for upper left only, and I need my lower left out too...but that requires me to get a seperate referral.

Furthermore, if I want GA I need to go through a totally different booking system and they dont know how long the wait is.

Gonna give it a few days, if the ulcer is no better (it does feel marginally better today) then Im off to see the detist for a professional opinion.

It's not that bad! Had all four wisdom teeth out under a general anesthetic 20 something years ago (****e, I'm getting old!). You feel pretty beaten up when you wake up. Just take the painkillers and get back eating. Was off work for 4 days but fine after that. I asked for the teeth before they put me under - they're now in a paperweight on my desk!

hongman
05-01-11, 03:20 PM
Oo-er. I cant take 4 days off! I have a business to run!

I can probably manage 1, 2 days at a real stretch but 3+, no way.

I had four teeth removed from top and bottom when I was 13 due to an accident meaning I needed the room in my mouth for my front teeth to grow back properly. It meant that by the time I was 16, my wisdom teeth were fully through. I never even felt a moment pain or discomfort...didn't even know anything had happened.

Have I made you feel better? :-)

In all seriousness for your situation though Hong, I would go back to the dentists now. When you get answers, you can take the right action :-)

Makes sense GG. Bummer.

In 26 years of my life I have visted the dentist about 4 times (yeah...), the last time was Oct or Nov last year. Clean bill of health other than a few stains, no cavities or fillings or anything ever in my life.

Now this. :(

Turn up for the local appointment then when they come at you with the tools act like a nut case and they'll soon rearrange for you to have a general. They'll also put a note on your file which means any future surgery will auto qualify you for a general too.

^^ Thats the advice my boss gave me - he said he did similar so speaks from experiance...note he also speaks from his behind quite a bit too!

As drew said on local the pain doesnt exisit, you feel the pressure but no pain, its very odd and hard to understand if you've never experianced it. For me, honestly it was the sound that is the terrible bit, made it worse by my dentist feeling hte need to describe each action before doing it:
"So now im drilling through the centre of your tooth",
"I'll insert this tool and with a twist, next your tooth will shatter"
"now Im going to extract all the shards of tooth"
-With a dentist pinning your jaw wide open and a vacuum holding your tounge back it was quite hard to say "please sir do be quiet or more accuratly, SHUT THE FK UP"

So apart from being wierded out, its totally fine no pain, just discomfort. IMHO the worst part is chewing on cotton wool for 25mins while I rode into work afterwards.

lol, sounds like a plan! Only thing is I wont be acting ;)

I was told by the nurse thingy that under local I can get it done at the dentist down the road, but if I opt for general (which I can apparently) then I have to get it done in hospital, and the queue is longer.

I opted for local for now.

Wonder how much wisdom I'll lose?

Well I finally had it out, only the 1 as I still need a seperate referral for the other.

I must of been in that chair for about 6 mins in total I think! The dentist said the tooth was causing the ulcerations, and the most painful bit was when he injected the ulcer with LA - some real man tears were welling up on that one!

But the extraction was almost butally easy (so it seemed). Pair of pliers, twist, crunch, snap, and it was out.

I say I feel ok as my mouth and cheek is still numb, dribbling everywhere etc, but we'll see tomorrow!

I asked to keep the tooth :) its sitting in a jar of bleach at the moment, as advised by the doc.

So relieved! He assured me I'd feel loads better for having it out as well. Phew!
