View Full Version : What have you lost on the road either from your bike or luggage?
I was just thinking about a time I lost my trainers and some clothes on the A1 from a ruck sack I was wearing whilst on my SV.
What have you lost either from luggage or that has fallen off your bike?

My tax disc (complete with half the holder)! I didn't even realize until my phone rang at work - it was the police station in Caerphilly saying someone had actually handed the tax disc in and that I should come and collect it!
Meanwhile the two tea towels as I used as an impromptu blanket to protect my fairings against Hovis' panniers somehow didn't work their way loose and detach onthe M4 at (spirited -legal Ed.) speed.
I think a certain madlander once lost his stubby exhaust......He didn't notice either until he got home

Lost my passport on a (spirited!) blast up to Heathrow when running very late for a flight once, somehow worked its way free from the top pocket of my rucsack. Luckily lovely check in lady let me on anyways with valid photo ID, getting home again was decidedly more tricky!!

I lost Squirrel_Hunters glasses and other assorted items once.
The first time the Thundercat broke and El Saxo was down here, the mofo's came to point and laugh at me and we went on a ride so I had to go on the back of Squirrells bike and wear his backpack, but he did the zips up so they were at the top and subsequently the bag blew open and his crap fell out..

Gave my mate brown trousers by loosing a half litre bottle of coke, which then came spinning straight towards his front wheel.
Had my Smartphone/PDA in a holder on the handlebars, working as a sat nav, when the holder came off and bounced down the road behind me at 30mph. Amazingly the holder took the fall and the phone just had a small amount of cosmetic damage. Specialone did a fantastic job of parking his bike in between the phone and the oncoming traffic, whilst I ran back down the road to pick it up.

I seem to have a habit of losing bottles of water off my bike while riding in front of other orgers...

What's a 20 bob note? Is that the same as a pound note (20 shillings), didn't realise you were that old MBK!

A bob is 50p, at least it was to my dad in Manchester as a lad, don't know about the exchange rates back then between England and Scotland though.
So it's a £10 note (in English)

Baffle out of the exhaust on a GT750 going down the M1. Map out of my bag going up the M1. Have nearly lost the wife off the back of bikes a few times when setting off. Just managed to grab hold of her ankle once to keep her on! Does not help when she falls asleep on the back.

5ltr of white emulsion paint. Heard it hit the deck, looked in my mirror to see it make one hell of a mess. No one behind me, so made a hasty retreat.
Also lost my waterproof cover off my panniers on the A50 on the way to a very wet Donington Moto Gp. Needless to say didn't see it again & I had wet undies & socks for the weekend :(

Lost a Diesel Tshirt somewhere between Reading and the M6 Services from a ripped top pocket of rucksack. Thought nothing more of it until i found it again, wrapped around my chain / rear sprocket with bits of thread spat all over my back wheel. All chewed up around the spindle etc... scared the crap out out of me after thinking what could have happened :S For the life of me cant work out how it came out of the deep pocket and made its way into the chain...

Firstly, a bob is 5p...FACT
I put my jacket on the pillion seat one day when leaving work. Put my laptop bag etc in my topbox (yes...I said topbox), but forgot to put my jacket in. Lost my license, wallet, etc etc.
At Donny in 2009, I lost the circlip holding my gear lever on and had to bodge some wire to strap around the loose lever.
Waterproof cover blew off my luggage on the M6 at some point.
Nearly lost my front fairing on the M602 as it started wobbling and when I parked up, one of the bolts holding on the front subframe was completely missing and the other one fell out after one turn.

i have always been parinoid of loosing something like my wallet or phone or something, i check my pockets are done up every time i come to a stop, its a little OCD for me!!

Was there a pollion on it at the time?? :)
Me on one or two occasions.
I've also lost the chain, gear change pivot bolt, the clutch lever when a car decided to pull out whilst I was over taking.
The pillion seat, not secured properly.
A friend of mine lost his pillion once. Very funny, apart from I nearly rode over here when she went. We were in the back of beyond in Germany looking for somewhere to camp for the night. We went down a track and after some strong winds, a branch of a tree was hanging over the track. He ducked and she didn't.

They had autocom fitted. Didn't do any good though because she was asleep. I have to admit, I didn't laugh at the time, but we were all still laughing years after. :)

Never killed me, the wife does it regularly (well compared to how often she gets on the bike she does it regularly).
I'd be wayyyyyy too scared for that.

She had an amazing ability to keep holding on even when she was asleep. Used to watch him go round the twisting bends and her head would be all over the place but her body stayed put.

Wife wraps her arms round me, then her head sideways on my shoulder blade and uses the lining of her helmet as a pillow, when I feel her move into that position I know she's settling in for a cuddle and a kip, usually at the end of a long day out on the bike. It's great cause it means I can get a shift on and get home earlier, and she doesn't dig me in the ribs for going too fast. Can go at a pace that she would be scared of if she was awake.
I forgot to mention. When that branch took her out, she went straight off the back but her feet came flying up and hooked under my friends armpits. So for a few seconds she was actually dangling on/off the back of the bike with her arms flailing around before she actually departed from the bike. I hasten to add, the speed was probably not more than about 15mph.

Witnessed the same following Paul with Gracicepants on the back when riding around at AR10. She nodded off quite unaware of how he was riding.

LOL! Stig, that is an awesome story...!
I felt myself almost nodding off on the back with Stretchie a couple of times, so easy done if you are relaxed!
the list before I as sensible enough to get a tank bag was: vacuum cleaner, oversuit, car numberplate and bottle of wine.
Vacuum cleaner?! Haha awesome.
I've lost a wallet, phone and keys although found my keys then lost them a week later only to find them again... I can't get rid of them no matter what I do!

My tent and camping mat on the way to AR10.
Camping mat was trashed, but ten was fine. Sent the wife to collect it from where I'd left it, but it had gone :(
New bungy straps for this year, new tent :p
That reminded me of the mat I lost and on the way home from Soho I lost a four pack. I was gutted.

What actually happened was... My backpack was done up exactly as I always did and before this incident, before I never lost anything. But as we over took a car full of young, nubile and presumably female occupants Stretchie decided to turn and wave emptying the contents of my bag onto the road.
Myself I once lost my fairings on the motorway. Riding over your own plastics at c.120mph is an interesting experience I would recommend against.

All sorts, the worst was a sensor package which was recovered a couple of months later through pure luck. These days I have the Spot attached to that particular case.
I have also had a score or two along the way when something has fallen of the back of a vehicle... or was thrown out of a window. The most recent was a 3-4 month old Jack Russell bitsa missing a lot of skin. He was found sitting by the side of a track out in the middle of nowhere looking very miserable. He has turned into a good little dog that has taken ownership of the bike... and me. He won't be left at home and has become a decent, for his small size even against other Jacks, bike security system when on the road.

I lost my big fat mate Graham the Union Rep who was riding pillion, when I dropped the Clutch to wheelie away from some lights in Acton High Street in 1982 on my GSX 250 speed machine. It was actually the last time I saw him, and the last time he spoke to me. He refused to get back on, and got the 207 Bus home apparently. Nice bloke, no sense of fun.

I managed to lose my rear seat cowl on my SV. Was only 3 months old at the time. Was heading down the A77 towards North Harbour Suzuki to get its first 600 mile service and when a got off I realised I had no cowl. FAIL!!!
Had to pay £90 for a new one, Argghhh.
I also managed to lose my Shoei Helmet bag because I never closed my ruck sack properly and it must have flew out. God knows where and I hope it didn't scare any other road users. FAIL!!!

Jeez, you started riding bikes early in life.
The complete rear brake caliper from my second ZZR1100 - I went for the brake and the pedal just shot down to the floor.
RD400 centre stand - I thought I hit a bump in the road... no, I'd just run over it with the back wheel
ZX9R pillion seat - dunno where that went, it just wasn't there when I got home. I hadn't even taken it off that day.
A few number plates back in the days when I used to velcro them on.
My mate Steve (Mr Turbo) Noble once lost my then girlfriend at a set of lights in Brighton off the back of his GPZ750 Turbo. He was ar$eing around so Lisa jumped out of my car at lights, threw her lid on and jumped on the back so she could join in the fun. Steve gave it the beans off the lights and Lisa wasn't ready - she did a perfect backward somersault off the back of the bike and landed on her bum right in front of my car. Steve didn't realise she was missing until we caught up 2 sets of lights later.

I lost a carrier bag out of my work bag. I was over taking a car and was giving it beans, the work bag blew open and away went the contents! All I saw was a ghostly image of a carrier bag blow up in my face and vanish, I never even saw where it went. I think Aliens took it.
I lost some documents too, but had no idea which ones they were!
She had an amazing ability to keep holding on even when she was asleep. Used to watch him go round the twisting bends and her head would be all over the place but her body stayed put.
I took an ex most of the way from Bedford to St Tropez like that once. Weird cos she was quite an animated burd when she was off the bike and doing other things.
Mobile Phone: Just the once from my pocket, tracked back and found almost all of it ;)
Oh yeah, lost a Nokia 6230 on the M4 doing 120mph on the Bandit 600 when my Baglux bag's map pocket opened up. I recovered most of that, rebuilt it and gave it to my girlfriend of the time. It lasted longer than the 6230i I bought to replace it.
I only went back to find the phone cos I needed the sim card for the numbers stored on it

Lost the end can off a set of spannies from a TZR250 on the Guildford to Petworth road once..LOL. It fired it off the front of a car into a hedge. Luckily the car driver was a biker and no damage to his car he found it quite funny and helped me look for it!
Worse one was I lost my passport, wallett, ferry tickets..everything basically on the motorway upto Calais. Id been racing in France and was making my way home. The top flap of my rucksack had come unclipped and a rather un-intellegent friend who was following thought that flashing me in broad daylight would get my attention rather than riding upto me and flagging me down. We ended up walking down the hard shoulder but couldnt find it. Got to Calais and had to sit in a little room for 2 hours before they would let me get home. Was pooping myself for a while there and what a hassle i had getting everything replaced.

I once rode all of a couple of feet before realising I'd left my gloves on the back seat, now sat in the road...wondered why my hands were a bit cold!
And I was told a bob was 50p too...tis oop in yorkshire anyway.
And I fall asleep regularly on the back of YC's SV, only on the motorway though. If we were on twisties and I was asleep, I wouldn't last two mins!

A bob is 1 shilling or 12d = 5p to you kids who don't know your LSD.
as in a 10 bob note = 50p in modern money
20 bob note = £1
9 bob note = putts from the rough.
1/2 a crown = 2/6 or 12.5p
My fathers fee notes were always issued in guineas. = £1 1/-
What a stupid currency we used to have.

240 pence to a pound, imagine modern teens trying to figure that one out... My dad's 73, he remembers it well.
So far I have only lost the little case that I kept my ear plugs in while off the bike, the phone was half way out of the same pocket when I got where I was going and realised.
