Hello all .
I have just brought my first big bike (sv650 1999 red ) .
I am currently only 16 as i am waiting till im 17 to restrict it.
In the meanwhile im going to buy the parts i like to make it just how i want :)
Anyway
i have seen a steering damper on another sv650 . and i was wondering whether they make a great diffrence .

Many thanks
Ollie

Don't need one a on a 650.
Would make a small difference, but that money is best spent on petrol.

SV doesn't need a steering damper.
Or, in all probability anything else you're going to bolt to it before you ride it. By all means buy things you want for the cosmetics, but buying things to change the feel / handling of a bike you've never ridden isn't ideal. There's a chance you'll spend a lot of money to bolt on bits that make it feel less like you wanted it to.

My mate got an sv just yesterday, i took it for a quick hurl and the first thing i noticed was how twitchy the front end is compared to mine (a thou)
Was actually wondering ig you could transplant a thou dampner to a 650?

If it's as twitchy as you say, something ain't right with the bike or changes have been made to it....

Springs oil and rear shock for your weight. If your gunna be riding in rain get a fender extenda....., getting the thing set up for your weight/height is prob the main thing handling wise.

Use it for practice with your mechanic training. It will be the best maintained SV on the road.

Alright Ollie, where are you? Might be some helpful members near you.
:D

How much do you want to spend? Anything from under £10 to replace the fork oil with newer and stiffer stuff to £100's and £100's to completely change the front end and rear shock for high end fully adjustable comp stuff.

Do a search on here, people change the rear shocks for ones from sports bikes, I think some are a direct fit.

Me and Squirrel_Hunter just helped BAP on here (has an '05 pointy) change the fork oil for some new 15w stuff and he says it's changed it completely and he loves it.

im training to be a mecanic so il be able to do the work my self

That'll help keep the cost of things down

Giving the forks a service and ensuring the tyres have the correct pressure will give better results on the SV than a steering damper would.

Crash Bungs, top priority imo.

Your bike, do what you want to it, but my advise is to try keep a level head about it (maybe ask for some opinions), I've seen some god awful OTT bikes with all this tasteless bling bolted on top.

the best thing Ollie would be do the cosmetic things then start doing the suspension etc once you've ridden it for a few months and a good few miles

Ah sorry the site must be down at the moment, isn't working for me either. Try again tomorrow - www.demon-tweeks.co.uk (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk) is the site, enter your bike into the drop down menu and see all that's available for it.

Demon tweeks is right load of chavtat.

Steering damper is waste of time, I have inch taller at shock, probably 4" at tail if you measure, inch shorter forks giving probably a full degree less rake. You can ride it banzai over bumpy potholed roads and it just wags it's head a bit, nowt to worry about just fun. Inherently stable bike. Lots more important things to spend your money on first.

Hi Ollie

this is the one I got for mine

http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a426/andrewsmith1708/Sale%20items/undertray3.jpg

Its cut down too far TBH. You cut the top mounts off the tray?

sv650ollie
21-01-11, 07:06 PM
oh **** .
yes i did :( mines just above the strap .

ollie

beabert
21-01-11, 08:06 PM
Im tight lol

I cut loads off, but did keep the base of the box bit the ecus in, and used that as a flap to fold upwards.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b177/dansarchive/IMAG0001.jpg

This is before i used an angle grinder to finished the sides. I used 1 b&q bracket to hold the flap up from above, and 2 more painted black for the numberplate holder. The brackets are connected together through the flap by bolts at the sides and middle, very strong.

Theres even less of it left now to make room for my new battery box. chopped it all off where the +/- symbols are.

andrewsmith
21-01-11, 08:31 PM
Haha, you happy with the part butchered tray?

Rob969
21-01-11, 08:38 PM
think it must have been a trainee butcher!! its serving its purpose as something i don't mind chopping up to sort out the battery mounting. just got to wait for a lad at work to make a new battery box up just got hold of a piece of stainless steel that he's going to make it from

andrewsmith
21-01-11, 08:59 PM
haha

on the tray I sent the front was me for a zx10 shock, the back was the previous owner :p

I'm going the same way with mine. Derail over
