Ok so my mate's brother has only gone and bought a GS500...not sure if he asked anyone for advice before buying but thought we'd put it up for discussion ;)

Apart from the obvious amount of crap off the road that will spin up off the back wheel, the fact there's no storage space apart from a tankbag, it looks hideous, has blatantly been crashed and owned by a heavy gorilla of a chav (YC's words)...it's a cracking buy...right?

Looks ok for £720.
I'd now go and find an original rear end and end can though!
Erm. Better not to comment seeing as it's a member of your family who has already purchased it. Me not likey though.
was your mates brother locked up in the attic when he was younger?

I did try to explain that this may not be possiable the best bike to buy, but what can you do? My last conservation went along the lines of ride something before you buy it...

what, no it's not a relative, it's a mate's brother! No relative of mine would be so silly...oh wait a minute yes they probably would...
I don't get why you would spoil a perfectly good gs500 as a first bike and get a mutilated one.

talk about polishing a turd!!!........ please tell him to slap the owner when he goes to pick it up
all bolts have been changed to stainless steel allen key bolts
You might want to replace them on the stressed components...:pale:

Its got a hugger innit, so no crap will spin up off the road, soft tail chop so not much different to a Hardly Driveable;)
It'll be ratted in no time, bit of netting over the tank, and have a big chav of a gorilla riding it, complete by wearing a pi$$ pot helmet:p
Anyway you could get a tassled tool roll on the forks!

LOL we its not too far from the soho massive, that just seems to happen!
Is that the only hope, or is there a less radical plan of action?

Modified, 'streetfighter' - GS500?
You wouldn't start from there, would you?

It's a minger of a bike. Made in the seemingly disgusting German style of modding.
lol no but he's in the army ...?
Well that explains a little.
I don't get why you would spoil a perfectly good gs500 as a first bike and get a mutilated one. it's horrid!
The normal bits look nice and shiny. It's just what has happened to the rest of it that is so hideous.
perfectly good gs500
They never made one of these

well iv been riding one to pass my test, doesn't seem that bad. And aren't they supposed to be a reliable commuter bike?

Aye just rot at the sight of a british road, good dependable bikes heard no one have out major.
Poor mans CBF500

Better than sticking them on a f*ckin' ducati ain't it
Funnily enough that thing looks like it will do it's intended job (going mentally fast down a 1/4) pretty well... and probably reliably too :smt082
Dunno what you are laughing at dizzyblonde, you have same bellypan.
Anyway, CBF rots just as fast. All that end of market are POS. GS is a good bike, it's a big old GS with the ends lopped off it, can't be that bad.

This original thread question sounds suspiciously like one of those discussions an embarassed patient has with his Doctor. "A friend of mine has a problem with his winkle, he's too embarassed to admit it, so he's asked me to come and discuss the symptoms with you".

Rather see them on my bike :p
At least the motor aint like the GPZ motor

Who cares, gotta blower and extended swinger it's a drag strip hooligan, probably N0s too. Loving the work.

Turbo not blower, who needs NOS. Can get 300+bhp easily.
But it looks american, has probably never seen the dragstrip :-P

They corrode horribly, are overweight, slow, crap handling, terrible on fuel and badly braked... apart from that little lot they are average and dirt cheap. They're cheap for a good reason though, a few of them I already listed.
I've got two blown up GS500 motors kicking around at my ex-housie's place, he uses them as kinda ground anchors for his bike trailer.

Actually Chris, I have a fair bit of experience of them having cared for and serviced a few school bikes. They really are crap bikes compared to the other 500s on the market of the same era. ER5s and CB500s were far far better.
They are nothing like an old school 4 cyl GS motor - sure they have twin cams and two valves but the similarity stops there. They started life in the late 70s as a 400cc commuter bike and were slowly hogged out to 500 and suffered all the usual problems experienced when upping the capacity of an already ancient design.

No, not on any of my bikes, it vaguely appears to be like the Roca on Suzy, and its certainly not an SV1000 one from the VRap.
Its looks more like one of these to me!

The only tool suitable for "tastefully modifying" a GS500 is a Chieftan tank!
Yes, they seem ok when they're the only big bike you've ridden, and then you learn different. Did all my direct access training and 1st test on a GS500. Did second test (the one I passed) on a shed of a CB500 and it was WAY better than the newer GSs.
I bought a pretty tidy '96 GPZ500 for £400, looks better and would give a GS500 a pasting (especially now it has fork emulators and a decent rear shock).

Until the engine crunches itself to death.
Until the engine crunches itself to death.
Just because you thrashed yours to death :D Mines got 30k on it and feels good for at least another 30k to be honest, as long as the magnets stay attached to the rotor.

I had a GS425 and it was a good little bike, the engine was roller bearings and it had 90K miles on it when I sold it on, still running. Guy who bought it made a hardtail chop out of it and last I spoke to him he still had it.
