I'm off to Tokyo for a few days with work :D

And I've a couple of free days, I think I've worked out a few things to do sight seeing wise, so I'm left with what is good to buy out there, e.g. cheaper/unavailble in the UK?

I'll only have a suitcase so no 3D TV suggestions!!

Sushi and Okonomiyaki would be my 2 things :P

As for tech - no idea, haven't been following the tech curve as closely as I usually do.

There's bound to be loads of new tablet PC's which we haven't seen over here, or swanky phones.

I would buy a tablet PC, can't see the point. But an Android phone, h'mm might be tempted

Tim I'd be looking for a grey bike exporter over there and finding a GSXR 400 SP

Japan is very expensive so don't expect any bargains. I think you are getting mixed up with china.
How ever while you are there you may as well buy one of these

I've not been for a few years, but last time I was in Tokyo digital cameras were quite a bit cheaper. They also had some great mobile phones, but nothing compatible with UK systems. It's worth going into one of the bigger Yodobashi Camera shops just for a wander around, but I've not found any really compelling bargains over there.

Keith.

Edit - I've just been onto the Yodobashi web site and a Nikon D700 is 203,200 yen, or about £200 cheaper than Amazon.

Won't chargers and instructions in Japanese only be a problem?

A mate of mine went over a couple of years ago, a real tech freak, was going to get those sony speakers that opened up and rolled around (we saw them but never sold over here) and the wee guy in the shop would sell them him but warned that they wouldn't be compatible with any of our systems or tech and the manual does not have any english...

Worth thinking about!

Try this, it might cause a stir if you give it to someone though. I think it's marketed for Geishas of the night training to target the western businessman. I think it's product name is misleading as it looks like it's meant to stretch your mouth, but I can't quite understand the benefit....

Most cameras have multi-lingual menus, but the default is japanese (no sh** Sherlock) which means you can't find the menu you need to change it to English.

From memory, I think their mains supply is 110v, so you would need to check that any battery chargers or power supplies will work with 240V. Of course the label you need to check is also in Japanese. :)

There are two real reasons why I haven't bought anything over there. Firstly, if the customs man catches you, duty and VAT will make it more expensive than buying in the UK. Secondly, your guarantee is pretty much worthless (with a few exceptions) and in many cases even if the UK importer wants to help they can't get the parts.
