View Full Version : March Meat Run!
OK, who's up for the second annual Meat Run?
I'm looking at a very similar route to the last one, with the obvious stop off at the pub*, but I'll get the ending right this time. I'll post up the exact route in the next day or two but I want to see when people want to have it first.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th weekend, and either Saturday or Sunday?
I'm easy on date but would prefer a Sunday as I play rugby on Saturdays now, however, I'll happily go with the majority.
* For those new to the EAR, or who didn't make last year, or who do not know the legend of teh Meat Run;
The half way stop off was at a pub that gave everyone a raffle ticket on our way in. We though it was a draw to see who would get out alive but tirned out to be a random prize draw for a load of raw meat. Of which Marco won a full english breakfast
Let's see what this year brings!

Should be there all being well. I would prefer something closer to the start of March rather than the end...the wifey is due to give birth on the 24th...but don't let me sway it as 1) the the birth could come earlier and scupper plans regardless and 2) I am sure if I can't make it there will be more ride outs to attend as the weather gets better :)
I want to attend, but it's probably gonna be too cold for me still and I doubt I'll have the new tyres and mot done by then either. Also I go down to 6 points from 9 in may so it might be sensible for me to wait until then.

Can do the 5th & 6th no problem and probrably the 20th, if MIL can have the kids, as the wife is on nights at the weekend.
Depending on which date the majority goes for, then I could take time off, as I've worked my contracted Saturday & Sunday hours for this financial year by then.

Oi, Rich. What's happening with this.
Well, it's looking like it will be the first weekend of March going by the vote.
How many people can make that Sunday?
Looking at a close copy of the last one (see maps link in the vote thread) meeting at 10am at Redlodge. Fuel stop half way and a chance to win that evenings roast, raw!

Seggons led us over to red lodge via st neots and there were ice rivvers on the road.
It wasn't to bad from this way but for some reason 1 finger on my right hand was freezing and all the others were fine. I still have no clue in the world where that pub is that we stopped at
maviczap
04-03-11, 05:45 PM
At least it should be dry and hopefully no frost due to the cloud cover.
Hopefully I'll have my sat nav fitted so if SvRich follows EAR tradition and doesn't turn up for his rideout
Forgot to mention pending a sucessful road test tomorrow i'll be there. Brake lines are all sorted.

Sat Nav is charging, and hopefully it'll be wired in tomorrow.
But you can relax because Gary Garmin got sold to some Dutch Nutter and I've got a TomTom rider, so hopefully no incidences of Gary sending us the wrong way.
But it wouldn't be an EAR rideout if we didn't do a U turn somewhere

If you're going to use your TomTom then I'll be using SvRich's planned route and using Tyre software to create the route and transfer it to my Tomtom. Well thats the plan

lol, I've been planning too many projects recently...got my mind in the wrong place obviously :)
Got Tyre setup already and have used it for some local routes, I just wondered if the route was already done....I know there was a google link somewhere, if I can find it I can create the route also...also think an ITN could be made using the kml output of the google link too...
I bring my tomtom anywhere where I don't know my way these days, I have my make shift cigarette lighter socket fixed inside my fairing using a piece of icecream tub :) Just a bit crappy using it without audio, it can be distracting sometimes!
I went out yesterday until dark and I thought I was going to lose a finger or two by the end, that's with winter gloves on!

edit: It looks like I'll be heading out on my lonesome? No one coming via Norwich or the A11? Atleast the current list of peeps suggests it looks unlucky. I think Rob and BBD are the closest, but coming from Kings Lynn you'll be heading directly south.
Have we actually decided the meeting time and it is the red lodge we start and finish at right?
maviczap
05-03-11, 12:54 PM
So me and GT380Paul will be at Red Lodge for 10ish
If its really cold I suspect that a good point to end the ride might be just as we pass under the A14 for the last leg back to Red Lodge from Bury St Edmunds.
I know I was glad to do this last year
Or we can finish the ride at Bury St Edmunds, Tesco?

I saw the gritters out on the back roads of Norfolk on Friday night so I suspect more will have been about elsewhere too, especially with the -ve temps coming in the evenings early next week...or so they predict
Do you guys normally meet at the pub or the cafe? I might try and squeeze a bacon butty in before 10 at the cafe...
What is the deal anyway? I assume it's all very very laid back  Do we all congregate at 10 or half past more likely, get warmed up, tea'd up and then head off for a bimble?

Sorry for not checking in sooner. I discovered that my bike hasn't had an MOT since last May the other night! So there has been a mad rush to get it checked over and tested. As of half ten this morning it passed :D. Now I can tax it tonight and all should be fine.
So, see you at Redlodge at 10am. Time for tea and bacon butties before heading out. It will be very easy going and we can happily finish at Bury Tesco. I'll have a satnav too but it will be the same one as last year though . And I won't have the route stored in it. I'll just use it as a rolling map. Should work though.
Get the thermals out and I'll see you bright and early tomorrow.

How many of you had 'moments' on the muddy sections?
I had 2, one on the first bend asc I attempted to keep up with Sv 'Rossi' Rich and the other on that twisty back lane before Bury
Aye it was bleedy cold, worse on the dual carriageways home
Had one slight moment when it felt like the front slid a little and another on my way home when the rear stepped out a little coming of a roundabout
kaivalagi
06-03-11, 09:07 PM
Those muddy stretches in that last stint were a bit annoying, I bet those roads are awesome mid summer! All that mud on the corners was a bit worrying though, there wasn't much road width to play with in the hilly section and I didn't feel comfy at times
I'll be glad when the sun comes out to play and the road surfaces are good again, I only started riding September last year so I'm looking forward to the summer months and hopefully feeling more comfortable getting the bike over proper (in time) :)

Glad to hear you all survived - sorry I couldnt make it
Cheers everyone.
Thanks to Rob and Dicky for the support work :)
It was good to see you all again, but a shame there was no raw meat to bring home.
Ride home was dull but easy. The ride route was good though, and different than last year, slightly ;) It felt good to go through some twisty sections rather than the normal A roads of my comute. No moments for me though. I guess riding the bike rather than having it sat in the garage all winter has paid off, even though it looks like it's been ridden through a muddy field. The new shock felt good, very solid and complete lack of bounce once a bump had passed under the wheels.
I'd be up for the same route in the summer. Less mud would be good, and leathers as an option so I didn't spend the day sliding all over the saddle.
I'm now going to look over the April track day possibility at Snetterton. Would be great to get a few along for a good day out. Novice only so no pressure.

Sorry I couldn't make it but had a trip to devon planned at last minute and had to go.
Was bloody cold out there though, the highest I saw the temp in the car was 7 degrees.
It was a lot warmer than last year. No ice to be seen anywhere!
All missing members were missed. The pub didn't quite seem the same with only 6 of us there, and only 4 of us had been there last year. It was very hard not to burst out with laughter when the same guy came round with the tickets though. And there were the same old guys still there playing dominoes and cards.
Are we the first official .org ride out of the year?
