View Full Version : T-Shirt Design Competition
So, I've floated the idea of getting some clothing made and that seems to be something you want...
As you may have noticed though, I'm not a arty bod by any stretch of the imagination. As a result, I'm going to refer to the oldest play book in the world, and cheat.
Designs on a suitably shaped image, and the only real guide is that it has to represent Yorkshire, and especially the dales. It would help if it looked good on both a t-shirt or a hoodie, but I've ordered sun for the weekend so it should be targeting t-shirts as a first choice.

I lied, had nothing better to do today so been playing around and came up with this:
http://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac229/fenjer3/GMIV/AR11take72.jpg
Right, after a little bit of research I came up with this
http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/dd505/reederandrew/AR11yorkshiredesigncopy.jpg?t=1306188821
'The White Rose of York remains as the prime symbol of Yorkshire identity.'
From this I concluded it to be the most fitting symbol of Yorkshire as well as looking reasonably classy. I guess it's not totally clear what it is from my picture and I perhaps should have extended the stem a little longer past the leaf. I understand some may say that it's not bike related enough, and that's a fair point. However it's something reasonably clean, simple and easy on the eye. It's a basic white design which is easy enough to absorb in a quick look and not overly detailed. Not sure if it being one colour would make it cheaper to produce or not? Fonts can be changed, the design jigged about etc etc and please feel free to use it as a template if you want or just change parts of it, I really don't mind as its there to help. It's just perhaps an idea or some inspiration for someone else to come up with something better. I do personally feel though that whatever crazy fonts people come up with for the place name and AR11, that the username part should stay very easily readable and clear. It'll just keep things simpler when identifying people at a quick glance (people will be able to attack me quickly that way and without me noticing they're coming for me).
Also I'd just like to apologise for detracting people's attention away from fenjer's submission on the previous page and would like people to go back and have a look at it and offer her some feedback as to what they think, as it's only fair that my posts don't take away any attention from other people's entries.
I know that I'm not photoshop or design expert but it's the best I could do :D I have a .PSD? version and .JPEG version saved on my comp if anyone wants it sending to them making it easier to edit.
Please feel free to offer positive/negative feedback.

Thanks Reeder - your rose inspired me.
Looking at a rear brake-disk of an SV, there are 5 fixing bolts, just like the Yorkshire Rose has 5 petals.
That got me thinking, then with some sights as a hub, and a deer as a target I give you these.
Text, Font, Position etc needs adding but...
For on a black t-shirt.

OHHHHH I LIKEY THAT SK!!!!!! The one to go on a black shirt is brill :)
Reeder, design usually goes on front, with a small 'username' on the top left of shirt, user name goes on the back.
Although, I kinda like the idea of previous ARs going down the back of the tshirt rear, with the username on the top.Like this.......

How about a wee change in colour to yellow for the disk carrier??
I like that idea Dizzy. We had a list of the villages/towns passed through on the route on the back of the AR09 one, also a bit like a tour list. I also agree that all AR's should be there, not just the ones you've been on.
I like your design Reeder, but I like even more the rose incorporated in the wheel/bambi combo.
Some good ideas happening here :)

I dont - I dont think it'd look good with only one other AR listed there, or none for the complete newbies.
SK I like your idea, I spotted the rose form before reading your description, really good.

This idea of his folks is a cracker!
Right then - if there are any more designs lurking about in peoples heads, get them sketched out and posted up.
Given that we will need a lead time to make any refinements and get them printed, I'm going to say that entries are closed on Sunday night. We'll then run a poll from Monday for a fortnight to decide which one is the final design, which should leave plenty of time for ordering and printing.

I think SK, that the text should wrap around the outside of the disk. Its a little hard to read it on the disk itself, with all the holes. I think it would fill out the design with regards to print on fabric.

Nice effects Dave, I quiet like the design but wonder if it's the right applcation? I'm not sure I'd want a gun sight on what looks like a target on my chest, all it needs is a "from" and "to" date and it would make an ideal deer hunting season sign :smt102

I am not artistic so no designs will come from me.
However, personal preference is perhaps a discreet name on the chest and no names on the back. After all what is the point of identifying somebody walking away from you.
There is nothing unfriendly about the imagery of a scope on bambi's mother. We are almost in the country, shooting is a country sport.
I do like Pegs effort though. Although I guess the silhouette should be the right bike. Natural evolution should say if has to be Gixxer, but which one?
I personally do see the point in having names on your back. What if you're walking towards someone who's facing the other way and you want to introduce yourself or say hi?
Peg's idea is good but doesn't seem to hold much relevance to the location (just my 2p :D)
I'm also with dizzy saying that the text should be on the outside of the disk. A colour that's easier to see on black would be nicer too, like white text? If it was on white tshirts then the text could be black?
dizzyblonde
25-05-11, 10:01 AM
I think Peg may have the copyright peeps after him, if we were to use that. he nicked it off the net..
Hes a ****, as hes not being serious about it....if i could have a mod stick to ban him from the tshirt thread......
I like the concept, but I really like the SK one, as its his own.
And names on back, has always worked. I'll pop off to find an example of my GM2 tshirt to illustrate.
Just a thought that if people aren't happy with the whole deer/stag idea that perhaps it could be removed and the centre of the disk just turned into the rose?
Sorry to hijack your picture SK but just used it as a rough example of what I meant.
Could take out the cross hairs in the middle and arrange it into the proper part of the disk and then using colours like below show that it's the yorkshire rose?
This was just a basic example of my thoughts on paint whilst at work :D

so, 'if' we were to go with the 'tour' design down the back, if we had say a larger font with 'username' on the back followed by the tour
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb45/loubi650/GMII%2009/gm2tshirt.png
everyone would know who we were from behind
with the main design on the front, with a small font for the username, say on the top left?
dizzyblonde
25-05-11, 10:14 AM
Just a thought that if people aren't happy with the whole deer/stag idea that perhaps it could be removed and the centre of the disk just turned into the rose?
I'd like the deer to stay, if its not there, it doesn't really tie everything together, but if the 'sight' thing was gone, it would perhaps adhere to a wider taste, but then I don't have issue with the sight either.
Its not the deer thats the issue for some.
You could however, within the constraints of the design, replace the whole bit in the middle with the correct Yorkshire Rose.
Are there any print requirements at all Dizz? Maximum amount of colours or anything? Issues with thin/fine lines at all?
dizzyblonde
25-05-11, 10:31 AM

no idea, I'll ask the printer fella
Can't imagine that lines would be an issue, but they might kick off and charge loads if we have more than about 4 or so colours. But again possibly not...

Is there going to be some sort of a poll on this subject?
Personally, I quite like the SK design, with yellow / gold inner and red lettering around the outside of the disk. The white rose of Yorkshire possibly highlighted in some way? Perhaps with a red (?) border around it, and with the stag's head with no crosshairs on it.
Just my 2p.
Keep up the good work. Really looking forward to the AR now!

Colouring is slightly more complicated, as its layered for some i think, as far as detail, it can be worked around, but be aware if its overload on detail and complicated if its shrunk down to put on the tshirt, the quality may be lost.
Simplicity is the key I think

The design ideas in this thread will run til around Sunday, then a seperate poll will be put up for vote for a week or two. We need the final design soonish, so we can get it down for print, don't a rush job, so giving ourselves a good amount of time.

The way we usually cost stuff up is:
The more complex the design is, the more it costs.
The more colours are used, the more it costs.
We usually create a layout of the design in photoshop with a 'per unit price' and also supply variations of the layout with aspects of the design adjusted slightly to reduce cost. That way you can choose the right compromise between the absolute original design and best price.
/derail....
If I can find a bit of time I might have a go at a design :)

I'm just racking my brains for yorkshire based stuff - yorkshire tea, hovis is basically yorkshire bread, yorkshire terriers, cobbled roads, the dales.
Did consider a biker in full leathers, helmet etc. getting his knee down........ whilst riding a deer.
But then like andy says the deer is quite synonymous with the GM rideout. Off to have a think for a bit :)

have a play around with fonts & stuff maybe david? Might just give it a little bit more dynamic :) www.dafont.com (http://www.dafont.com) - try and avoid fonts which are uber scrappy as they'd take longer to cut and would be a right slag to weed out = more costly :)
also you could qualify it slightly underneath with a bit of a strapline like

I like the front a lot - not sure about the back - too complicated and I am sure that Bell or the BBC would have issues on the lid being used, and the Stig drives cages, not bikes :p
In Dragons Den fashion, I would be more than happy to do a joint venture and switch the rose from the 2011 part of his design for the brake-disk from mine.
EDIT - OOps. just noticed that was 2 designs, not a front and back - the second one (with the lid) wont work as the name would be tucked into the back of peoples trousers :p
The 1st one tho is spot on I think

Dizzeee, he's a timid little soul hiding away from all you vicous org bunch - either that or he doesnt know how to add pics to the forum if they're not web based so asked me to help out.
Its not my design to discuss your proposals dave, Im sure Rob will be along shortly though fella. You were right the first time as well, these are meant to be front and back designs of a single shirt.

In Dragons Den fashion, I would be more than happy to do a joint venture and switch the rose from the 2011 part of his design for the brake-disk from mine.
Awww but thats kinda what I like the most about Robs, that it encorporates the yorkshire rose into the design - that'll be between you both to discuss though.
I thought similar about the lid design, think it would be better to use a none branded / more generic helmet for the centre piece.

piccy no worky?
yeah the helmet was meant to be just a helmet - i'd rather it be a silhouette type helmet to match the rest of the design, but didn't have time/skills to photoshop it properly.
Nope, not shy, just couldnay be arrised setting up a photobucket/online pic account purely to upload these pics, so nerr! :p
Put name at bottom of back because when worn over leathers it'd look like I was some supreme moto gp rider with my name on my leathers...

I personally think with these horns and a helmet silhouette rob's design would be good. I too would move the name from the bottom however as not everyone will wear them over leathers and they might be tucked in if there's people there who are 30+ years old ;)

IM sure someone with better PS skills could move the horns in so they overlap the cheak area of the lid like they do the actual rams head.

Well as you inspired the rose in the brake-disk idea, Roberrrt is giving me other ideas, I just hope that they dont come out too close to the inspiration and leave anyone feeling ripped-off.

Team effort Dave, no rip offs within the org... unless your working for Motrax lol
I didnt notice the rose in the brake disc! Tbh its so similar to an actual disc that I think the detail is lost in its subtlety.
I don't think anyone should feel ripped off really. It's a group effort at the end of the day and you're someone with the skills to be able to make the ideas come to life. I'm quite pleased that I managed to help you come up some ideas to be honest :D

Its a lot more noticable on the non-deered on a white background I think :)
Subtle is good, but can be tweaked :)

not a fan of the stag/deer personally. reminds me of the gm instead of yorkshire. tbh i feel it should have something to do with yorkshire. Stone walls, twisty roads, rose maybe?
Yeah see, Im not the only one.
I think folk will have to be told there is a rose there to see the rose.
I've just looked back through the thread and it is a lot clearer without the deer target but i recon that its still lost. - Sorry just my 2p worth

Very rough for now, need to render the SV650 logo and "flower-up" the brake disk.
