According to MCN there is a race between Steve Brogan on Jentin BMW and a Ariel Atom with a V8 busa engine on tonite's show, they even intimated that the bike wins , but we'll see!

Yep tonight it the Atom challenge. It was filmed late september Steve Brogan let the cat out the bag that it was a s1000r

Apparently the race bike beat the Atom by over 2 seconds. So the producer insisted that they use the s1000rr road bike, which looses by 0.8secs. That's from someone that was there.

Getting a bit narked with them and the camera trickery , copter lands on the roof of the car , it is to the left , as car slows down it is dead centre , and when Clarkson gets out of the car and the copter blades are still runing ..... why isn`t his shirt ruffling like a flag on the top of a mast ?

Stop Farking about with camera tricks and just get on with the show

+1 they don't seem to be able to make an episode without 'accidentally' setting something on fire or saying something controversial. 'Look i have a can of puss.y' for example. Oh look the lights went out, oh look the Christmas trees on fire, really? Used to be funny and entertaining now it's all a bit contrived.

And before anyone says don't watch it then, i didn't! :)

That bit bored me too, I was falling asleep at that point. Hammond only seems to talk about those Porsches, jumped up Beetles...! MUst be something to do with the size of them, makes him feel a tad more proportional :-D Waste of a classic beetle too, chucking it through the sky like that! But this is Top Gear...Still enjoying the banter and the entertainment factor though, John Bishop was funny but there was no chat about the cars he has which is usually the interesting bit!

I dont think it was, I reckon it was Mexican built one, which they probably got cheap.

It wasnt the same beetle he did the initial drag race against the porsche in england with.

It does annoy me how many cars they smash or blow up etc though.
Like when they bought 'supercars' for 10k was it? They basically just ****ed them up completely. I sat there and thought to myself, 'Well there goes another 30k of the licence payer's money just for them to bugger up some cars'.

I do generally enjoy their Sh!te though...

Nice to see that a Bike is the 2nd quickest thing ever round the test track.

Look, its an entertaining show, just see it for what it is.

One annoying thing was, i got all the DVDs for xmas, a lot of the cars on them had been featured on top gear before.
The SLS merc was on top gear just before xmas, then it was featured in clarksons xmas dvd, bit cheated by that tbh.

Whinge whinge whinge whinge whinge... Dunno why I thought there might be some interesting debate about the Atom Vs RR...

Without whinging, chatting poop yadder whinge blah..... (try it guys...).

good little race. Atom is mega, supershort gear changes, mid power drift, turned me on like a virgin in a strip club.

Bike was SO much faster in a straightline. Think its the hammerhead, the car had the exit/power down out of the bend and the bike had to play catchup to that fast right hander. So slower exit, but still quick enough to get in front on that short straight. Problem is, is he went in too deep on the brakes, and had to swing left, the hard back over to the right to get the line through the "tyre" fast left hander hence loosing shed loads of speed to make the move. Thats where the atom re-gained and carried on momentum, and whilst it lost out on the next straight, it had enough to keep with it until the brakes at which point it was always going to over-take again.

But, still, £150k, or £14k....

I know from Performance bikes as well that the BMW in full power mode with exhaust etc, does 0-178mph in just over 12 seconds. No car, not even a Veyron would be in sight until top speeds are achieved (wouldn't want to try one from 100 up though, would be much closer).

Rest of the show, normal modern Top Gear really. Know what to expect so not geeky enough to moan about it. If I don't like it, I turn it off and dont' feel compelled to jump online and moan. I think this sums it up...

I quite like TG, take it at face value and apprechiate that its entertainment and not a documentary. EG the Skoda Yeti... well those tests werent even close to been fair. erm NO 5HIT!
The porsche / beatle race... Hammonds hair suddenly grew between the tg test track and him going to africa, those pieces were shot out of sequence. erm NO 5HIT!

Its a larffff and it rips a new one in watching any of the alternative parrrrpp shown on a sunday night.

Look, its an entertaining show, just see it for what it is.

Indeed, usual mix of chat / banter / entertainment. Its far removed from being a show about cars anymore. I'd much rather watch this than another soap or another series of celebrity slipping around on ice dancing in a jungle or whatever.

I would have liked more stuff on the Atom, more techie stuff about how they developed it etc etc, but then I have been following its development via my brother who works at Ariel so I have an idea about its difficult birth...

I enjoyed it, far better than anything else on TV on a Sunday night IMHO.

And daimo, if people feel compelled to write about how good they think something is are others not allowed to voice their own opinion? Or do you want the Internet to be a nice place where not a bad word is spoken?

In fact, all I can see is yet another whinge. What actually have you replied about TG there? See image above....

Tatcom, ohhh its the freedom of speech thing now  You've had your nice say, so i as a user of the internet, MUST say something, negative, that been written every single week on the interwebz, AGAIN. Jjust to have my say and contribute, without actually contributing at all.

Fizzy, indeed, i'd have like to have seen more about it. Im sure its got a 10,500rpm or so limit, nothing mentioned. There was nothing really technical about the car, but as you've said, i'd been watching its progress for a few years, just never got to hear it. Sounded quite muted for what I expected really. Hefty powerband though, you could see the way tiff was giving it just enough throttle to step out, but not too much that it lost performance.

Wonder if we'll ever get to see a Caparo Vs Bugatti Vs Atom V8 Vs Caterham Levente....

Now thats a lineup i'd like to see them drag race :D

Noob, nice contribution.

If you refer back to the OP, you'll see there was mention of hope that the new show was better than the xmas special. That, IMO, was a comment about the quality of the show and its content. I was quite right to comment therefore, on the quality of the show, and in my view, how it has deteriorated into being something too predictable.

It would seem that your WHINGE about other users was in fact more off-topic than my first comment. Go ahead, have a read.

I'm not keen on Top Gear any more, and was interested to see the BMW vs. Atom feature (again, as mentioned in my first post). You might still enjoy its repetitive nature, after all, you're having to have other people's views explained to you more than once. That's fine, just don't complain when other people decide they want to air their opinion too.

HTH.

This is an interesting article (dunno if it has been posted already)

" The challenges might seem contrived and the opinions pushed to extremes mainly for dramatic effect but taking this show too seriously isn't the way to enjoy it. The joy of Top Gear is escapism, the idea of sticking two fingers up at all those people in the world today who tell you not to do stuff. An hour or so of that on a chilly Sunday night in January can't be a bad thing."

A good conclusion, however, IMO, they need to be careful treading the line between being controversial but funny and being silly/slap stick annoying-ness. And the way they seem to be heading is more in the direction of unintelligent humour whereas their greatest success was with the satirical stance they took previously

Roberrrrt

Anyone else think that the new stig is the reason why that comedian not only got the fastest time but absolutely obliterated it? I think they need to whack new stig in the Veyron SS and see what the times look like!!

They obviously felt the need to make it clear that "The Stig" is generally as fast as any other "The Stig".
It has frequently been different people. The point of the unnamed, faceless racing driver is that regardless of who is wearing the suit, the laptimes are supposedly comparable with one another. If they proved that "The New Stig" is faster than the old one, it would only mean that they, for all intents and purposes, have to discard all their old power-laptimes.

Anyhoo. It could be Tiff (for now at least), but there'll be a huge number of competent racing drivers (or at least Collins' level) that will do the job for far less than the Needells, or for that matter, anybody famous or noteworthy, would want paying, and the end result will be the same.
Something Collins himself clearly didn't understand.

Id sum it up as, the bike lost a tiny bit in the last bit of the corners but more than made it up on acceleration once leaving the corner, but ultimatly lost out on the brakes twice at the two big slow downs.

It seems to be more clinical these days, like they are trying to push the ****ing about and pointless messing up a notch. I mean its good but they need to balance it with some interesting tests that do work something out, like they used to.

Just to know where you stand, I still enjoy it, but its not going to ever beat its own Vietnam episode.

I asked my brother about this last night. He said theres two exhaust systems for the V8 one quiet and one loud. It was runing with the quiet exhaust and thats why it sounded like it did.

He said it sounds much better with the full exhaust system on and its also alot better in the flesh.

I guess its not going to sound like an american muscle car V8, because its based on bike engine. I think its more F1 like in sound on full chat, which cant be a bad thing IMHO.

I wish they had elaborated more on the engine..they just said it's two bike engines moulded together. I guess though if they had spent too much time talking about actual specs of cars etc they would lose the vast majority of the audience that like cars rather than actually being interested in them.

Its two Hayabusa blocks bored out to 1.5 litres with a bespoke crank / bottom end.

I dont know if they used the busa engine heads or not, but I can find out if you are interested.

yorkie_chris
25-01-11, 10:59 AM
I would think it foolish to not use the 'busa heads. Really a block is far simpler than a head, so why borrow the cylinders but not the heads? It's already very well developed, lots of parts, cams etc. available for it and lots of people know how to tune it. And it can flow a lot as stock.

Fizzy, indeed, i'd have like to have seen more about it. Im sure its got a 10,500rpm or so limit,

Fairly similar idea to the puma racing one AFAIK, custom set of crankcases and crank. Basically 4 SV cranks stuck together. Weighs nowt :)

It's the first time I've watched it and thought they were deliberately saying those things just to get a reaction. I thought they were going a bit far, but then I thought they could have said worse (e.g gun-slinging, hostage-taking, drug-dealing, border-jumpers etc etc). They probably reined it in a little.

The French get mocked with at least equal severity on a weekly basis. I'd frankly be appalled if other countries didn't frequently make fun of the English.

Quite a weak start to the series, although this second episode had some comical moments.

However last night they couldnt be bothered to complete task so enter tumbleweed moment.. Didnt think anyone knew what to say next. I have to say the highlight of watching top gear is to spot the strategically placed attractive female in the studio. Have a look in the studio sequences, Bill odie would have had a field day last night.

There's always a decent bird just in shot when any of them are talking for a while lol.

TBH I don't watch it because I know it's going to be a moving, groundbreaking, tear jerker of a program. It's just a bit of fairly mindless entertainment. If you want the former then go watch some short films that are all done in foreign by a director noones heard of...

Thought this series is a little better than the last. Far less cringe worthy moments in it.
