View Full Version : Bird Strike
OK, so who has had a bird strike?? Yesterday I was batting it on the 1050 when a pheasant flew out at me, luckily it caught my arm and shoulder so didn't have me off. But today this is the damage that it's done...
Sorry the pic is a bit blurred, I was trying to take it myself. It's very painful and not all the bruise is out yet.
Thanks! It's getting on a bit and the light keeps playing up, but it does the job!! Lol!
Poor pheasant. :P
Never hit anything but roadkill, not been riding for long though.
P.S that hand cream is really good stuff!

Ouch but glad you weren`t too badly hurt.
I was hit on the neck by a pheasant whilst riding at about 70mph, it knocked me out cold and I ended up in an 8 foot ditch with a written off CBR600, 3 broken ribs, a dislocated knee and a buggered up hip. I was lucky to be unconscious tho as I landed in a "relaxed" state and my injuries could have been far worse.
I cringe now when I see pheasants.
Oh heck Claire. I was going faster than that so I was lucky! Saw the thing fly out and knew if it hit my chest or head it would have had me off. I was very lucky that it caught my shoulder and arm and bounced off. I think the lorry behind me finished it off properly..

Hmm, am I alone in thinking "ooh Lunch!"? To think that I used to be a lovely kind vegetarian! :smt061
Nasty looking bruise though, hope that it does not ache too much.

Nice, hope you got off & picked it up for the pot.
I had a very close miss on my part 2 - I think the examiner said 'nice reactions' but I could have sworn he was laughing softly.
Might be why he passed me despite him looking like he was in a fowl mood as we set off (yes pun intended).

I hit a bird quite a few years ago now, hit my thigh as I was doing about 60-70 ish and kind of exploded on me. Feathers everywhere and guts over my leathers and a cracking bruise to go with it!

Must be a weekend for animal/bird strikes
BIL hit a fox with his car, raidiator & front parts are fubared, expensive as its an Audi.
Glad you're ok Lou, as pheasants are big lumps of stupid bird
Been hit square in the chest, ripped my hands off the handlebars. Luckily I was going in a straight line and after having a little lay down on the pillion seat, I got back up and pulled over, gasping for breath.

Surely not.
I was worried that the flipping thing was going to explode over me, I hit a blackbird years ago and the mess of the bike and my leg was horrible, having to clean blood and guts of leathers is disgusting.

Petevtwin on here had a good one, his shoulder was proper bruised by his, nasty business.
Rather get hit by a bird though than a deer, a female deer......

Pegasus had a good one a few years back near kendal, i was riding behind him and got a ringside seat. We were moving progressively so he did well to stay on.

Hope you heal soon Lou :)
I have a hatred of pheasants ever since one came straight through the windowscreen of a car I was in.
Ended up covered in blood and I will never forget hoovering its head up when cleaning the car :pukel:

I've done that too. Although it was not a high speed affair and resulted in me falling off the bike onto a nice soft grass verge.

How unpleasant for the pheasant as it crashed into the van
It isn't fit for raosting now, it's looking more like jam
It only tried to cross the road, to reach the other side
But a pheasants got no road sense and that is why it died

stoopid plucking pheasant's eh?
I had a blackbird bounce of my nearside mirror and into my chest at 60mph - pain was prolly similar to someone taking a run up and landing a punch in your chest/shoulder area..
I was covered from waist to helmet in white bird crap as well! Looked like I'd massacred the tip-ex section of staples with a shotgun

I hit one on the M54 :-( was doing about 80 and I could see the daft thing trying to fly up out the way of the traffic, it hit me square in the face! Broke my visor and I got blood and shti down me! I did think I was gonna come off but somehow held on. It felt like someone had belted me round the head with a house brick! Not nice.

Jeez, you were lucky.
A friend of mine broke his neck when he hit an Owl. Sadly they both died.

That's illegal - you cannot take your own 'kill' - but someone else can !
I've had 2 bird strikes - both when I had my old 1200 GS
(1) On the way to an Org meet at Boxhill when a crow (I think) flew straight across the M25 and got decapitated by the 'beak' on the front of my bike leaving it's headless body stuck to my handguard twitching like crazy & leaving the front of my bike covered in blood.
(2) During a ride around the back lanes a pheasant decided to take off from the side of the road and took out my nearside mirror - nothing left on the road other than a few feathers so I assume it survived.

Your whole upper arm could be that colour or worse, the bird could have had you off. A first time hit probably has the potential to be the worst... so for a first timer, good job keeping it together.
It looks like you were hit where a bit of basic armour might have saved you the bruising.
FWIW, we've had a wet year, which means bird numbers have exploded. I've hit a good number of birds (and bats) up to about 0.75kg, mainly on the bike but a few have been on the helmet, chest and arms. I've also taken a couple on the neck brace... I really don't want to be hit in the throat by a bird.
This year I even took a hit from an apple thrown by some little snot who thought it would be funny to take a pot shots at bikers. The vehicle and individual were identified by the on board cameras and prosecuted. A few years ago I was hit by a beer bottle, fortunately with no real force. The armour saves the hurt.
My worst hit was an emu a couple of years back which had me waking up in hospital a couple of days later. It's a bird, but at 30-40kg it'd be more like you hitting a really big deer. There's something else for you to look out for.

I did have on my armour, but I won't mention the speed, but bruising was inevitable.
This was my second bird strike, first one was a blackbird that hit my bike, blood everywhere, not nice cleaning up my leathers!
Wet year in Aus? You don't say!!! ;)

Queensland flooding? That's a more recent thing. I was actually thinking of SA, Lake Eyre and the Simpson Desert which has been wet for most of the year.
