View Full Version : Riding Without Tax And An MOT

How far can I go?
Need to get the bike MOTed and Taxed following its resurrection. Now I know its legal to ride the unMOTed unTaxed bike to the MOT station and then to get Tax provided I am insured (which I am) and provided the test is prebooked (which it will be), but how far am I allowed to ride it? The reason I ask is the bike is in Chippenham and the place I've been getting MOT's from for the past 5 years is in Swindon (about 30 miles, one junction up the M4) and I'd like to carry on using them...

You are allowed ONLY to ride to and from a booked MOT via the most direct route. You cant use it to collect the tax even.

there is no stipulation on how far, ive done N.I to preston

Steve, there is no distance defined for it. As long as you go straight to the prebooked test.

Yes there's no distance stipulated. If you got pulled I dont know if it would wash though...
If you park it up to go and get the tax its an offence....technically.
My boss got done a couple of years ago whilst getting his new tax disc for no tax as his previous had runout. And no, he didnt get away with it...
Seriously is it worth it, just to use a certain MOT place?
yes its worth it as i dont have to walk to the post office. i plan on mot and tax same day and this will be a saturday. then it's off to see the wizard the wonderful wizard of ozz.
Hey dude how's tricks? Must catch up soonest!
Anyhow in answer to your question, if all is prebooked you will be fine! Get tax on the way home after MOT is done! it would take a very perdantic officer to do you it in Wiltshire unless they are Traffic having a bad day ;).
You've got the insurance, pre booked MOT and getting tax (revenue issue not really a police issue) on the way home, no drama's

Thanks. But when I get pulled expect a phone call from the arresting officer...

I see what you're saying but so long as its legal I'd like to. The place I use is a small independent, I've always had good service from them in the past so I'd like to repay the favor.

YOU CANNOT GET TAX FROM THE POST OFFICE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A VALID MOT CERTIFICATE IN YOUR HAND!!!

haha! You have my number! Seriously though, I need to go 30 miles to get to anywhere that does MOT testing for bikes anyway. There isn't an issue providing you go straight there and you have the test booked!

Sorry but I think you will find you are doing the MBK here. It will hardly be an offence to get tax on your way back if you have already passed the test...will it now???
dont know what ever gave you the idea i would not get the bike MOT'd first. or do you think i'm dumb....

Best name I have come across is Annie Swallows....
You can go as far as you like to an MOT station aslong as its pre-booked but make sure you have enough fuel. Don't stop for food or drink...
Here's an idea, whilst they are MOT 'in it! Find the local post office and then you can get the certificate and pop down there on foot or jump in a cab, get the tax and then make your way bk to the MOT place, I'm sure they won't mind looking after it for 15mins. :-)

Oh and how about Theresa Green, my Mother used to work with her.
I'm sure you can only ride with no MOT if your going to and from your test station. Tax is easy and can be done online as your probably aware, you will be able to print off a receipt until your disc returns. You don't need MOT to book TAX, well I didn't when I had a similar situation to your self with my car.

Thanks. But when I get pulled expect a phone call from the arresting officer...
Doesn't matter if it washes with the arresting officer or not, they only have the power to report you, not convict you. Let them write the ticket, say your good-byes, then when you get home tick the little box on the back that indicates you'd like to have it heard in court. If the law stipulates no distance restriction quite clearly in black and white, then a simple letter will sort it, and you'd hope the copper would get some retraining.

You can go wherever you like when returning from an MOT providing you passed. And you require to have a valid MOT and Insurance to get tax. The problem with doing it online is that the database may not be updated quick enough and won't allow you to order your tax so you would be as well going to post office with the certificate in your hand that day.

This is the only forum I've ever been an active posting member of, other forums are just for information and advice as and when I need it, so trolling is still a bit of a mystery to me to be honest, I'm sure it's a LOT worse on other forums. I have done a bit of trolling in my time on this forum, but only where the member I was targeting deserved a bit of their own medicine for their own trolling antics. I've come to the conclusion that they are more to be pitied than scolded. There really is something missing out of a persons life if they need to get amusement and kicks winding up people they don't know and have never met over the internet. Must remind myself how lucky I am next time I am laughing with my family and friends, or pee'ing myself at something my 3 year old has just come out with.

I actually have no problem with anyone on here, im sure they are all great people, i wouldnt say i troll as i actually normally post reasonable informative comments but when certain forum members decide its time to "have a laugh" then i "have a laugh" back. Unfortunately they cant take it and get all offended which makes it funny that they can be so sensitive.

wonder how many times i will get pulled by the boys/girls in blue when i get my bike mot'd and taxed due to ANPR? or is it that advanced and up to date that it will know i have done it.
this will be done on a saturday just before post office closes.
i think it takes about a few hours from when you buy over the counter to when ANPR gets updated, i got pulled once and i had literally just bought my tax and gone out about half hour after buying it. took 15 minutes on bike to get pulled in Erdington, showed them the tax disc and receipt and they just left it at that, saying the system hadnt updated yet
