I can't really participate in this thread as my curvy only had 20k on and I've only done about 5k of those.

However, my mate has done about 125,000 on his 1994 'Blade since new.

Well yeah I suppose it's cheating really. :D

But just text him to ask him how much he has on it and it's actually 147k miles. I thought it was less! Impressive IMO. I've just worked that out and that's 23 miles a day since new.

Still 147k is a good advert for Honda relability & build, although a big engine is not going to be as stressed as a small one I would assume, so less problems

i cant compete, my current bike only on 7,800 or something like that, and the SV only fot to about 28k, but i have known of the large kawasaki lumps getting up well into the 150k+ range.

and i remember being told when i first started riding that bikes wouldn't go past 40k before they started falling apart!!! what a load of crock! - i recon any large lump thou's, 1200 etc would keep going up to 200k if looked after. and not miss a beat

I got my GSX250 up to 70k miles before it was, er, shortened by an idiot in a Ford Escort. Even small engines can go on and on if they're looked after. Oil and filter changed very frequently meant the motor was fine, the electrics were falling to bits though...

SV made about 32k I think.
Bandit is currently on 34k. Would be about 50k+ if I went to London.
Benelli is on 10k

Only niggle witht he Bandit I think I might have an over-fueling issue. Getting kick ass flames out the exhaust on throttle roll off. Otherwise its running spot on still. Tips with Suzukis, copper grease every single bolt you remove and put back in, EVERY bolt!!!

Back in 2006 I gave a 1983 Honda CB250RS away to a friend, it had recorded 192,000 miles. I was given it in 2001 when it had 135,000 on it and I used it to do a 100 mile round trip every day plus a fair few pleasure miles. It's since been restored by a young lad in Wigan. When I gave it away the entire bodywork was covered in black duct tape and under that every panel was a different colour. The frame had to be welded because it rusted through by the rear shock mounts and where the sidestand bolted on (I had to lean it against posts and fences for about 6 months) and the Motad exhaust was welded because I kept grinding holes in it on corners. The ignition switch was operated by a stubby screwdriver attached to the handlebars with a length of string after I had to slidehammer the ignition barrel out when I lost the key. Every indicator was from a different make and model of bike, none of which were Honda ones. I very rarely changed the oil because a crack in the crankcase meant it required 1 litre of oil every 4 days and to keep costs down I normally topped it up with oil saved from when I changed the oil in my other bike or friends'. A Scottoiler was rigged up in the topbox with a touring reservoir cobbled up from a 1 litre oil bottle that was also filled with old engine oil. It once seized on the M25 just before the M1 but freed off and I rode it slowly to Hemel Hempstead to get some oil because I had forgotten to check it that morning. It carried on after the seizure for 30,000 miles with no problems. It was crashed twice by me and got run over by a Renault Laguna. I got enough out of the woman who ran it over to keep it in tyres and chain and sprockets for as long as I owned it and simply kicked it straight to repair it. A;ll in all it was probably the most abused bike I have ever owned but it refused to die.

I loved that bike. To celebrate it clocking 150,000 miles I nailed it flat out down the M25 and saw it hit 92mph on the clock as it turned over the magic 150K. That night I changed the oil for the first time since I got it.

F*** :D

well I currently have a little time, so to address some of these points.

yes my SV did cover 153,167 miles in two years 2 months (baring 3 days), it was both a pleasure and work vehicle, obviously a few bearings and things I deemed "consumables" were changed as needed but ostensively the rolling chassis was the same one.

In that time it had four replacement engine, and done 19 track days, I determined the bike would be heavily used and frankly abused, never giving any consideration to mechanical sympathy once on track; cost wise swapping the motor was far more economical than rebuilding it; hence 2 motors were killed in that fashion either totally awesome or boom....

one of the engines was a JHS big bore one which used vast amounts of oil from the get go and lunched itself a couple of time (mended under warrenty) before I pulled it and broke it for spares, which left the final engine, the bike was shed stored for 6 years and then given to my niece, she used it for a year and to the best of my knowledge it's still going today on that last engine.... hope that covers it. :)

Fortunately I've had a several bike at one time to share the mileage over.

I don't keep an exact record of my mileage, but since 2000 I've run a dedicated fuel account and worked my yearly mileage out from that, all the ad hoc cash fills won't be on it, but it's the nearest I can get (rounded to the nearest 1k either up or down).

2000 64k
2001 31k
2002 68k
2003 75k

How about highest mileage per year? You could have a 10 year old bike with 100k on it but that's only 10k per year. I have a 62 vstrom ex demo that only had 500 miles on it. Since I bought it in September I've put 6k on. My SV I had from jan 13 and broke it in august 13 it had 6k on the clock and 18k now.

my annual mileage went down dramatically in 2007 when I bought my V-strom, I sold my office that was a 17 mile one way commute and moved into my barn, so zero commute. Before that, I was riding 25k-35k/year, now only 15ką

what has changed most for me is that I have discovered that snow & ice is no big deal if you have the right tires, in 2010, I bought a set of Karoo Ts, drilled stud pockets and inserted 10mm standard automotive carbide studs

the front tire hokked up well, but rear tire I still had to be very careful with throttle control, in 2011 winter I experimented with the darkside, a 205/50-17 Gerneral Altimax Arctic car tire on back, it was successful beyond my wildest imagination, the pic I posed above is in a blizzard snow was coming down 3" per hour, I went out that day just to see if I could, I actually found it relaxing, a few days later, I was travelling home at night in what I thought was rain on a freeway didn't dawn on me till I realize cars were only travelling 30mph where they normally drive 65-70 that is was freezing rain and sleet and I had no problem maintaining a 40-45 mph pace, soon the freezing rain gave way to sleet, then snow, 7" on unplowed road by the time I got home, in the 75 mile ride that nite, saw several cars in ditch on the way, a week later, I had a similar coming home from an event over 100 miles from home

I sold my Jeep, don't need it anymore

Wait, a car tyre? As in one designed to go on a 4 wheeled vehicle? How does that even work?!

RandyO
13-03-14, 09:17 PM
Wait, a car tyre? As in one designed to go on a 4 wheeled vehicle? How does that even work?!

on snow & ice on the street, better than any motorcycle tire ever thought of working, in the summer,
so so, more effort to steer (but so would a motorcycle tire that size) real funky at low speeds but
soon as you get out of the parking lot, the difference is barely noticable

takes a bit of experimenting to get the right air pressure, to much, it feels like it looks, square, too soft
and it flexes too much and looses stability, its a radial tire and the carcass acts just like a radial bike
tire, sidewalls flex and bend

advantages: winter rubber compound doesn't need to warm up to have traction, sipes , High milage,
I've got over 35,000 miles and it still has 6mm of tread depth , nearly double the contact patch of a
bike tire, it floats over mud, better rear braking, Cost: $110 for a tire that lasts 50k vs bike tire that
costs nearly $200 for a tire that only last 6k (I didn't do it for the cost savings, it was a winter
experiment)

disadvantage: slightly heavier steering (imagine putting a 180/60 on a SV instead of a 160/60) , low
speed handling , off road the wider contact patch catches more imperfections and it can throw you
around a bit

Well I managed to triple the mileage on my bike in a year, had 7000 miles on it when I bought it, had about 21000 miles when my new policy started. I changed jobs part way through the year so now have a 50 miles commute everyday, as I have no car and no public transport, and I also just like riding my bike, I expect to exceed 18000 miles this year, but my target is 20000.

This man deserves a medal, I was wondering how I could get around when it snows, (especially as I'll be on call out for work next year) might look at this for next winter if I see cheap rims pop up and snap them up for this purpose. (I have ridden the SV in several inches of snow with pr3's, which went better than expected but is not the best idea). I could actually stick them on my old CBF125 as my girlfriend doesn't ride it in winter, and with 11bhp you can't spin it up if you tried, it weighs 120kg and is pretty indestructible when it comes to crashing. I'm getting all excited, roll on winter!

Oh, I did manage 12000 miles on the CBF in my first year, and my commute was an eight minute walk!

Hats off to you mate, if you'd have told me that down the pub I'd have thought you'd had one too many!

Do you normally stick with a car tyre on the back during summer or do you change for a more conventional one?

Hats off to you mate, if you'd have told me that down the pub I'd have thought you'd had one too many!

Do you normally stick with a car tyre on the back during summer or do you change for a more conventional one?

Firstly, I'm impressed that you gave it a go, and even more impressed that it works!

that was my original plan, to go back to a conventional bike tire during the other 3 seasons

As I said, when I first put it on, it was an experiment, I wasn't even sure it would fit between the swingarm or hold air pinched on to a 4 inch wide wheel when it was intended for a 5˝" - 7˝' wheel, the reason for a 205/50 is it replicates very close to the height of the stock 150/70 (only 2.5mm shorter)

I had my local dealer install it for me, when they first put it on, it still leaked a bit around the bead (not due to tire, but condition of wheel) we checked to make sure it fit between the swingarm and cleared the chain of my V-strom, barely by less than 1/8", then broke the bead down to put some bead seal on then reinflated, no leaks, at that time, my mechanic told me, if you want to swap in spring, get another wheel, we're not gonna take this off in spring and remount again next winter, infact it's likely I will have to destroy the tire getting it off.

So, I ran that tire for 3 whole years all 4 seasons, just this fall, I scored a spare wheel for reasonable cost on E-gay, so next spring, that's what I will do, spare wheel I got came with a nearly new Tourance

the one very bad thing about a car tire, all your suspension, bearings steering has to be up to snuff and tight, and deficiencies ad amplified, headshake can quickly turn into a tank slapper (like going thru wake of a large truck as your passing it) with the studded knobby in front I really had to limit speeds to less than 70, with regular street tire like a tourance, I can go as fast as the bike will go and have stability , V-strom 1000's are restricted in 5th and 6th gear, I can actually attain my top speed (nearly 140mph) in 4th, the only unrestricted gear

RandyO
15-03-14, 02:48 AM
Bet you don't need to even use the stand with that tyre on!!

surprisingly, the sidewall flex I think causes it to fall over easier, when walking beside it pushing, it feels "tippier" than a bike tire

I get a lot of flack, people that have never tried it telling me it can't handle, your riding on the edge in a corner, it can't have as much contact patch, but I have learned, a radial tire it a radial tire, there is a slight difference in the bead design and flat tread cap, but the radial carcass works the same

check out the yellow wing is this video, running a car tire
