Changing the bearings on my SV from ball to taper ones as that's what's in my new frame.
Got the races out of the frame ok and got the new ones in.
Had some issues with the lower bearing on the stem though. Had to grind the old bearing off and managed not to mangle the seal. Good I thought til I fitted the taper bearing to find it catches. This is despite the bearing not sitting flush on the bottom of the stem which is another issue. Only fitted the seal as the race I got was without a seal. I went off the part numbers for the ones I took out of the new frame.
Have now read on here that the seal doesn't go back on when you fit taper roller bearings. Out with the grinder again for me. Good job I met a man today from SKF who offered me a good deal on bearings.
When I get the new taper bearings I've read that I need the ones with the integral seal as I'm guessing otherwise the grease leaks out the bottom? What do I do for the top yoke bearing?
To see what it feels like I've assembled the stem and it moves freely but is sluggish like the grease is very high viscosity. Is this normal or should it be free moving with no resistance?
Anyway, this is almost a what not to do post so lets hope it goes better for round two.
