View Full Version : What would you like to invent
For my masters I have to pioneer something so I've been studying Binaural beats and bio-waves following on the research of Dr A Tomatis, as I want to find the frequencies which are created in Tinnitus sufferers. That and a lid wiper for rainy days.
i hope you get there Smudge. thats fantastic work that would defiantly benefit mankind in a big way.
funny though i had a conversation with my eldest after school about inventing things and he said 'if i were to invent anything it would be a projectile dispersal shield' his thoughts were to invent something that would turn bullets/projectiles into dust which in turn would stop all the senseless killing in the world.
his words not mine.
Sounds like he's got his head screwed on even if it's a tall order. Makes a change from weapons design, one of the work placements was with British aerospace I'd dread to think of why they would want sound specialists probs one of those sonic cannons lol
think you would be surprised. frequency has a massive part to play when designing things that fly, also cabin pressure could probably be dropped using sound waves just like the field you are studding at the moment. or sound propulsion. true that most advances come form weapons research which is a shame.
yup my kids do have their heads screwed on.
After I D-mobbed I trained and worked as an electronics engineer before being made redundant so I had a head start when doing my BSc Hons as like you say many scientific laws cross over.

I'd like to invent something that will turn Davina Macall into a worm, and then I would squash her, like a worm. Then when I'm happy - I will go and hunt down Louie Spence and zap him too. Wouldn't squash him though, I'd leave him as a worm so he can mate with himself.

Something cheap, probably made abroad for little money that everyone wants one of with a low enough price tag that everyone can afford one.
Damn, I think that Mr and Mrs Preston already invented the Davepreston...

Id like to invent some kind of energy source that didn't need oil, gas or electric so I could put two fingers upto the oil companies controlling the world.
I look at the price we (the west) pay for fuel then the obscene wealth in the Arab countries, it's just not right.
They will get their comeuppance one day, hopefully in my lifetime.
I'd also like to invent an everyday item that would be known as my name instead of the product name, like Hoover or dyson, it would be built HERE as well, not by some 7 year old Thai kid.

Dammit, just done a bit of research. Apparently there is something called a "Parent"? that should do that.

TIME MACHINE!!!!!
During school when doing my exams, a friend and i were saying during physics that if we were to fail, not to worry as we would invent a time machine in the future, go back and pass the physics with all our new found knowlage........oh and win the lottery!! :)

Something that gets rid of leg hair permanently and painlessly in one session. And high heels that look great but don't kill my feet and that I can walk in.
Clearly this is not going to bring word peace or solve the energy crisis but at the moment the only reason why women haven't solved both of these problems already is because we have to spend so much time waxing our legs and shopping for the perfect pair of shoes.

Its not THEIR fault that Allah planted them on top of the black gold...
Nuclear Fusion SHOULD bring a new age of peace and light - it should provide ultra-cheap energy that we can use to crack hydrogen out of water to provide an alternative powersource as well as make electricity generated from the heat by-products cost pennies.
Aluminium, well the expense in creating or recycling is the huge electricity bill, so while we may end up strip-mining all of Australia, we have a cheap material too.
So, with electricity so plentiful, and our cars running on hydrogen, we should have fuel bills in tens of pounds a year and electrical bills we hardly notice.
However, can you see the Electrical suppliers suddenly cut our bills to a tenth of their current levels.
Of course not...

Yes I also hope the corrupt leaders of coutries like Saudi that are such great allies to the west and sell at remarkable prices, yet enjoy the wealth of their countries resources on themselves and stupid palaces/projects whilst neglecting their own people get their comeuppance.

Funnily enough I read on BT news yesterday that a company is in the process of making a oil free petrol made from hydrogen, which would cost as little as 19p a litre. With government taxation it would come in at 40p a litre, and would cost £46 for a 70 litre tanked car.
Its around 3-5yrs away from being able to sell, and would be ok to shove straight in to a petrol car without conversion. Would be emmissions free.

Sorry to launch my usual annoying argument which obviously has no relation to the physics of the matter but has anyone asked them where they are finding hydrogen in an emissions free manner? No?
That is cool, possible, nay probable that this can be done, but it relies on a source of energy to make the hydrogen. You can't get owt for nowt, hence needing nuclear fission or fusion reactors to generate the energy.
It also solves the storage problem of hydrogen tending to just bugger off of it's own accord, and doesn't need a load of arty farty fuel cells and electric motors. However, what's the fuel like? Is it cool running enough to not detonate a normal engine to bits (as pure H2 would)?
Ideal world for me is when they invent something to distill CO2 from the atmosphere (easily possible now) and crack that back into carbon and O2, reform that with the H2 from water to make hydrocarbons again. Synthetic petrol from nowt :)
I'm no industrial chemist, so who knows if it's possible though!

I'll go for a fabric that's soft when flexed slowly, but extremely stiff at higher speeds.
Naturally, the first application is textiles for bikers that are comfortable and provide good protection. But it might also be handy for police uniforms and other protective clothing.

There's already materials out there like that, non-Newtonian fluids etc.
Currently being trialed for lightweight body armour etc.
You can make your own with custard powder and water.
I'd go for a system of government that I could believe in and economics that relied on something other than usury - something like valuing all products and services in calories ie the total amount of energy required to make them.

With a neck pain at the moment which is driving me mad, I concur. I mean there are some out there that do the job, but by god the side effects just don't make it worth taking.

Nought Arty Farty about fuel cells or they wouldn't have me coding a control system for them. Creating hydrogen from waste electric is a possibility, not exactly clean but if you have some form of clean source (hydro/wind etc.) doing it, the stored hydrogen could then be used for aiding "on demand" loads.
For me the issue is getting the materials to build them in the first place.
Oh BTW the stuff I am working on is running in CPOX mode, so methane rather than hydrogen, so all those with the problem in the "when is it acceptable thread" can get hoses fitted to their backside to generate electricity as a bye product of their bye product. Now that is clean but smelly electrickery.

No, there's nothing particularly remarkable about fuel cells in themselves; the science is relatively simple but the fuel used for them is a source of controversy.
However, trying to get them into vehicles that are allowed to become financially and popluarly viable is damn near impossible. My brother was one of the first to establish a company manufacturing fuel cells that could be used in commercial cars. They had backing from major sources, some Government bods and a big time player investor. they managed to get a few London cabs fitted up with them, and a lot of the airside transport at Heathrow, but there were 'dark forces' afoot (rumoured to be the major car manufacturers in USA) who would not let this go ahead.
It seems fuel cell driven cars are not to be.
For me, I'd invent a sleep machine. Get 8 hours sleep in 30 minutes. Get so much more packed into your life then!

Now I like that idea. Think of the money you could earn for doing 23 hour shifts at work.
Not really what you was thinking was it?
Although with the extra tax being paid on the extra earnings, would this not solve the economy?

Yeah, but are you going to see the sort of energy density from stored H2 that you can get from petrol and same specific power from a fuel cell and loads of electric motors that you can get from a combustion engine?
It's the storage of H2 that is the biggest one, dunno what that particular fuel is in the article but it would seem to have solved it, possibly that stuff could run a fuel cell too?
Fact is it is much easier to pour a liquid than transfer a compressed gas.
