Well it was to me anyway. This afternoon I R been mostly cleaning carbs.

GruntyGiggles' ninja is going up for sale real soon so I am going to give it a service, change the fork oil and clean the carbs for the new owner.

Anyway, got the carbs off and doing them one by one to clean them and the jets/pilot needles and so on and I found that on each chamber, the person before me has managed to trap the edges of every single diaphragm.

So been ringing around to try and get some and find out that there are £23.50 +VAT EACH... EACH..

Oh my life, so that's over £100 for a full set.

Now, the bike had obviously been working fine with them like this, I'm sure many of you saw the bike flying passed on the AR as Grunty was a marker but I just couldn't put them back together as above with a clear conscience, they have been stressed and stretched in those areas, you can see it when you try to pull it straight, and they won't go back in to the correct shape.

Oh well, it needs doing now but £23.50+VAT EACH. What are they lined with magnesium or something?????

Caveat Emptor would have saved you £100 :p

a certain organ mentioned to me that by placing rubber in a sock and boiling it up in a pan it generally reforms to its manufactured shape... might be worth a shot if it saves you £100

Having worked in plastics, what owenski said is true, a lot of plastic moulded parts will 'remember' their shape.
Problem you might get is boiling water probably won't get them warm enough, a lot of PP and PVC stuff start to go pliable at around 104 degrees, so salt in the water will help you get the temp towards that figure.

The diaphragms will defo go back to their original shape if heated gently and there not creased or anything.

Personally I would get a heat gun on a low setting and heat them up away from the carbs obviously.
Keep the gun moving, not too close and not in one place and it will be fine.

If it's running alright, just put them back as they are. You'll know about it if they're leaking, and the rubber is flexible enough that if they're working they're unlikely to split in use.

Trick owenski describes can work on stretched and mullered brake seals.

Cheers guys but I shelled out for the new ones, where the crease is on each, if you pull it and try to straighten it out they are very creased and not too happy about using them again.

Will give the heat a go now though just to see what it does.

To be honest I'd never start cracking carbs open if the bike is running fine.

My other post may have been misleading, it was running fine while it was being used but it's been stood since just after the AR and runs a bit lumpy.

Opened them up and thought they looked fine (untrained eye) but after getting the old carb cleaning spray around it all it's much cleaner than it was.

So when I get the new diaphragms it should be sorted.

But I must admit it was partly due to "If you don't try, you'll never learn"

Oh she loves it to bits, great bike just not too interested in riding any more.

I think it's just one of those things she wanted to prove to herself that she could do, and by god she could.

So the BabyBlade will also be getting the treatment and going but so will my FireBlade (I just want some cash for mine so I can buy more tools :p )

For the purposes of clarification...yes, I am selling the Kwak and Babyblade. I just enjoy going fast too much and my family have suffered enough deaths in recent years so rather than risk adding to that, I shall from now on be riding on track only...or possibly getting something rather more sedate in future...but I really did love riding and pushing myself and I know myself too well to believe that I may not be swayed to push myself and possibly...end up hurt or worse.

I'm not stopping riding, just stopping riding on our UK roads!

Track the baby blade. That is my suggestion. I would not like you to sell the baby blade. I love it. I would like a go of it. That is all.

But, but it's the BABYBLADE!!!! It's awesome. More awesome-er than a Kwak, even though I like Kwaks..

Could be worse you could need a certain seal, which isnt available on its own and only comes as a kit, the amount of times people have laughed when ive told them they need to spend lots of money for the 4 seals they want and 20 others they dont

Yeah, I spoke to a few places to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off.

They all said I was getting off lightly as many times you can't get the diaphragm on it's own as it comes as part of the piston slider and they are much more expensive.
