View Full Version : Snowboards
Been a few times and rental costs are just silly, thinking of getting my own board, bindings and boots.
Not going this season so not in a rush, shall I wait until summer for a good deal, I imagine there are some good second hand deals to be had out of season??
Anyone know the best brands, I only know Burton, K2 and Salomon but not sure which others are good quality?
depends what sort of boarding you want to do...general mix, only downhill or parkland stuff (stunts).
I'm a big heifer who can't jump so i've got a downhill board. I've got big feet too so have risers on the bindings so i don't catch my toes all the time. the board i have is a nitro, good quality stuff. i've got flow bindings which is a bit of a contentious snowboarding issue, a bit like the old curvy/pointy debate here (obviously flows are great and curvys are best)
may be an idea to go to a shop and fish for advice before buying second hand, although you may get a real good deal at a shop
have a dig about http://www.snowboardclub.co.uk/ that is full of useful info and discounts if you join up, has a good forum too
cool, thanks. I'd be doing mostly piste stuff but wouldn't want to limit as the last time I went I did have try a few jumps in the snowpark. Think I'd like an all rounder really

If you are interested I have got a decent secondhand snowboard for sale.
Can also supply the bindings and a set of boots if you are a size 9.
I bought the board secondhand and put in for a full service straight away. It has been used just once since then so is in great condition. The bindings are burtons ones too I believe and the boots are Vans Encores and are in near perfect condition just a tiny bit of colour washing onto the white bits when they get wet.
They are these: http://www.kateskates.co.uk/productdetails.html?x5=2147379154&x1=2060188472&x2=2142577930&x3=2142577930
Can get some pictures of snowboard and bindings if you are interested?

Double post...duno why
What size board is it? Got a pic of the design? I'm a size 10/11 boot but bindings are usually 7-10 aren't they?

Think it's 158 but will have to check. Will check and take pics in the morning if that's ok?
Bindings will take any size boot. Talking about boots I just double checked and the boots are actually a size 10.
The boots have that quick release and tighten mechanism which is great! Also the are really sturdy but comfortable.
Think I need a 162, 158 is a bit small. If you've got a link to the board online or something that'd be good, don't go out of your way to take photos as I don't know if it's the right size

I'd recommend a Bataleon board the triple base is awesome much harder to catch an edge and therefore great for confidence.
I have a Goliath.
Other boards I have had, Palmer bit stiff for the level I was at at the time, Bataleon EvilTwin good but too short for all mountain and Bataleon Fun.kink (good but not as good as the Goliath I already had). Also tried lots of other boards Burton Dominant was the best of the rest but that was back in 2009.
Dont get suckered into which has the best picture on them.
I did have a pair of Vans encores but didnt get on with then I have 32 lashed now and I like them but boots really are personal preference and are probably the more important bit of kit you can get. When trying boots have them on for at least half an hour and walk round the shop to get a good feel of them.
I have Rome (top of the range but cant remember the name) bindings but again personal preference previously I tried Flow (hated them not stiff enough), the Binding Vans used to make good but highbacks werent tall enough and an lower version of Rome which just weren't comfortable.
You can try stuff at TSA's at snowdomes at Castleford and Hemel for free, Snow n Rock usual charge for demo at their domes Chillfactore, best to try before you buy methinks.
I was a newbie 2 years ago looking for a good package, I was recommended Burton for board and bindings and theyve done me proud :) I like boarding in random conditions now so am looking to upgrade to maybe a Lib Tech Banana or one of the Never Summer boards.
Also check out Salomon, Gnu and Forum as you cant really go wrong with their boards. I've heard that the K2 Illusion is a really flexible, forgiving board for beginners. Decent price too.
For bindings, i've just christened my new Union Contacts last week in France. Really impressed. The Flow bindings are supposed to be the quickest and easiest to get out of, handy if you fall over a lot  Rome also make good bindings.
Boots wise its entirely upto you, whichever fits your feet best. Definitely try as many as you can before you buy. All the same brands do them like Ride, K2, Rome as well as DC, Celsius and I ended up getting a pair of 32 Lashed
Enjoy :D

ive only ever had burton boards, just look on ebay and you can get some nice 2nd hand deals especially at the end of the season. I recently got a old burton dragon for like £80 fair enough its 10 years old but was nice to use, picked up a burton clash with mission toe bindings off the bay for £120 a few months old, was happy with the deal especialy when burton mission bindings are more than 120 by themselves

Another huge + 1 for Bataleon boards from me, I've had a Bataleon Hero since 2006 and love it, it's made such a different to my riding.
The triple base works, far harder to catch an edge and therefore means you get away with loads of little niggle errors that most other boards would spit you off for.
Oh, and they go like stink too when you point them in a straight line!
Bindings, personal preference but after trying Burton Customs (cheap rubbish that kept breaking) and Burton Cartels (expensive rubbish that kept breaking, and were so uncomfortable they were like instruments of torture), I'm now firmly settled on Salamon Relay Pros.
They're not that cheap, but in 4 years nothing's broken, they're comfy and as responsive as I need - job done!
Boots, I can't recommend you any because unless they fit you properly they'll kill your feet after a few hours. Best advice I can give you is to simply go to a good snowboard shop and properly try on as many pairs as you can until you find the ones that fit best.
The boots are easily the most important bit to get right, and any decent snowboard shop worth their salt will be more than happy to let you take up residence for a couple of hours while you get the right boots.
It took me 3 goes to finally get a pair that fit me properly and don't kill my feet so I speak from experience here!!

Photos as promised but by the sounds of it you may be looking for something a bit more than a first board on the cheap. BUt here you go anyway:
Heres the package as it were. Burton Indie Board 158, Burton Custom Bindings and Vans Encore Boots Size 10. The twig branch thing is an optional extra but I must advise you that owning one makes you too cool for school.
8456
Heres the back of the board. The black bits are repairs done to the board. They are done to a very high standard and as I said the board has been serviced and has only been used once since.
8457
And the Vans Encore Size 10. You can just about make out the colour wash but apart from that they are pretty much like brand new.
8458
I'd be after around £150 +postage for the lot. Postage on eBay seems to be around the £20 mark for boards so call it that.
Offer open to anybody however obvioulsy Sauluk has first refusal.

For what its worth I've got this far sale:
http://www.edgeriders.com/k2-brigade-snowboard-k2-brigade-2010-snowboard-kite-wakeboard-shop.html
Used once for 4days last Easter, I bought it hoping to be able to use it many times in the future but as Im only 5'7 I messed up I should have got a shorter board I didnt find this one very fun when messing about. Longer boards and flipping to switch isnt a great combination when peiste riding.
I've also the boots and Bindings I bought, some K2 zone7 or something bindings. Which fit my size 10 K2 Riader Boa's similar to these:
http://www.conspiracyclothing.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_copy_of_K2_Raider_Boa_snowboard_boots_blac k_07_08.html
Looking for the lot £200 inc postage.
EDIT: Sorry Mr Spiers, didnt read the full thread wasnt trying to undercut you etc - Mines priced higher than yours so doesnt undercut anyway but its available to anyone should they want it, I too will add actual pics shortly.
PS: I do belive mr spiers's offer is a steal!
Wasn't expecting to see people selling them here! I had a look into Bataleon and they get a good press, particularly the goliath, so might keep a look out for one.
Mr. Speirs, I think the board is going to be too short for me but might take a pop at the boots if I can try them on somewhere. I'm just not sure if you're supposed to go 1 size up on board boots and haven't tried any on recently??
Might also be interested in the twigs?
Mr Speirs

Yeah you are meant to go 1 size up apparently. Theory is you wear thick socks to keep warm.
Ah the twigs. I wise choice sir.
