View Full Version : V-Strom 1000
I'm serously thinking about flogging my Versys and buying one. Are there any horror stories to be told of them?

Cam chains have been known to jump off the sprockets and cause the usual terminal havoc
SV type suspension, ie diabolical

You could ask Viper, he's got one, although he's not been on here for a while
Aren't they fitted with the same engine as a SV1000, in which case the camchain and CCT design would be identical? I've not heard of this problem on the SV1000 engine, so why would it be specific to the DL?

Sorry I was talking out of my ****, about the Honda, on a different planet earlier
Yes, V-Strom is the same engine, so no horror stories there
Just the suspension isn't as good as the Sv1000, bit basic I think
The Pingu's have one, ask them.
I'd buy one

Ah right. I owned a Firestorm in 1998, sold it before all the CCT issues came to light... luckily. All they were known for at the time was destroying water pump mechanical seals - mine got replaced a couple of times.
I rode a V-Strom 1000 about a year ago and really got on with it, and today chatted to a guy who just sold his 58 plate one this week - that rekindled my thoughts about them.

I had one on a 3 day demo and loved it, suspension was a bit suspect but no more than the sv's, longer travel iirc which might make it feel worse, nothing that couldn't be rectified i assume. so more praise than horror story, sorry.

Yes, thats where my brain was.
Usual Suzuki things, no grease on assembly.
I'm sure there was a review in Ride magazine and there were no big issues with the V Strom
The Thou engine is well build and good for high miles.

Supsension is SV and not up to much, brakes are the sv650 2pots. As a side the new 650 strom look stonking value for the kit on them
My IAM observer had one and never had a issue and he does runs up to scotland a couple time a year fully loaded
I had a DL650 for 4 years. Was a good all round bike. Great for one up touring but not for 2.
As others have said stonking engine... Suspenders easily sorted out .. Very good V-Strom forum or over at SV1000 one...

There's a guy on OSS despatches on one, really rates it, he's done some astronomical mileage too.
All sounding good so far. I must go in search of a late low mileage one.
Thanks guys.

Not sure what mpg you're used to but IIRC he gets 40 or so, I'm surprised as I thought they'd be worse.

Sounds like the chap on the SV1000 portal... think he's up to nearly 100k miles and still going strong...

There's plenty of people on 650s that use more fuel than my SV1000.
No, I don't know how they manage that.
Lozzo: Strom is great - if you can find one take a look at the rebadged Kawasaki version, they usually hold a bit less value and the screen and clocks are better.

Ooh good point, Sid. I'd forgotten about the KLV, and it would keep my old mates at the Kawasaki shop happy too. Thanks for reminding me.
This KLV looks good value: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201101376639945/sort/priceasc/usedbikes/model/klv/make/kawasaki/radius/100/page/1/postcode/cm187ab/quicksearch/true?logcode=p
Hmm, this one looks even better, being 3 years newer and in black not the gash orange

Depending on age versus price requirements have you considered other big twins, what about a KTM 990 Adventure?
£5700 - K6 - 7K Miles - Black: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201040370043371
Just a thought...get an ABS model for a bit more...
Or if you can wait a couple of years for older second hand a KTM SMT, which is most likely what I'll end up with when I can afford it

I had the gt one for 18 months did 7k on it and loved it. 2 up touring was easy, heated grips. Amazing engine. Me lass made me sell it when i got knocked off it otherwise i'd still have it now. Did loads to it to make it a really good bike. The engine is a corker but front and rear suspension needs sorting if you are going to travel briskly on it. I put GSXR front brakes on mine and continental road attack tyres, it was very capable and handles much better than it should. Fuelling is an issue and you need to get a yoshi box on it to sort out the flatspot. Idle up 0.5% fixed mine and it pulled very cleanly. I fitted a scott oiler and some big exhausts too and it set car alarms off debaffled. Brilliant.
Only bad points, the finish is terrible even by suzuki standards and parts vibrate off it alarmingly quickly. THe worst thing though is the buffett from the screen. I tried 5 different screens and in the end found the tiniest one was best as it put your lid in clean air.
Hope this helps.

Put quite simply, I wouldn't buy a KTM
Hope this helps.
All helps, thanks.
For the record, I'm a shortar5e at 5ft 8in with a 28 - 29 inch inside leg. I can just about manage the seat height as stock but would probably lower the bike to make it easier day to day. I've found the MRA Vario screens to be the most effective for me on all the bikes I've tried them on.
Whats up with the versys Lozzo, you just bored with it.

Fair enough, simple reason? Too tall? Servicing costs? Reliability? I don't want to de-rail the thread...just curious as knowing the pit falls would better any decision I might make...

I had a go on TLWs at the AR, I would buy one tomorrow if I had £5k burning a hole in my pocket :-P
Then again they are massive and you may struggle with height, DL isn't too high.

On the KTM arguement if I had 3k spare I'd be buying the DukeII in my local dealers

Well I had my Strom raised at the back which let it turn in very quickly, I suppose you could just drop the forks through for the same effect. They are heavy when full of fuel but so easy to ride slowly in traffic etc you should have no problems. The vario screen is the only one I didn't try so start there!! Also the tuono mirrors make a massive difference to the wind problem.
I forgot to mention I had both crankcase covers changed under warranty as the paint fell off after 6 months from new oh and first gear is very low and wierd. I really miss the power of the thing now. My 600 hornet is clearly fast but just not the same. I think it'll be my last inline 4.

Nothing wrong with it as such, just want something with a little more go and that will cruise at a higher speed with more in reserve

Too tall, not reliable enough for my liking, too expensive for what they are, no main dealer within 30 miles of me, servicing costs, parts costs, insurance costs etc etc. Added to that, I just don't like any of them

Heathen!
I'm a KTM fan but do admit they can be an aquired taste though.
The reliability issues have pretty much been sorted and if you look closely, you get loads of little extras that the others in the same class dont get.
Yes they cost more, but you get more too.
I'm guessing your nearest dealer would be didcot or market deeping.

the only known engine issues with the sv thou (dont know if its the same with the strom) was power fluctuations at cruising speeds 70-80 in 5th or 6th but its a easy fix, and "the knock" to do with the clutch plates ,it sounds wierd but does no harm
i suspect the first issue wouldnt be the same as the strom as it occures because of the tune (getting it under regs)

They do hiccup and shudder all over the place until you get the fuelling set up. then they are great.
