View Full Version : Proper Petrolheads...
...have to have owned an Alfa at least once in their life according to Clarkson, so I took this for a testdrive today:-
http://pictures2.autotrader.co.uk/imgser-uk/servlet/media?id=1567159018
Alfa Giulietta - 170bhp diesel, 350Nm torques, 60mpg combined.
Very quiet and refined, even from start up, however flick the 'DNA' switch to Dynamic and it goes like a rocket.
Order will be placed tomorrow, however I will go for the new 140bhp diesel that has just come out (none available to test drive today though). 0-60 is 1 second slower (9 secs), mpg is a bit better (up to 72.4 on a run!) and it works out about £20 per month less on finance.
To think - I nearly went for a Nissan Qashqai instead :smt015

I think that is the new definition of insanity, buying something else when you could have one of those.
Stunning car!
Price of the QQ kept creeping up (ordered it 7 weeks ago via Lombard Leasing and just been told it has gone up again) so I thought - sod it, if I am going to be paying that much I just as well get something I actually like :D
Had a look at a one series beemer, (didn't like it) and was going to testdrive an A3 Black Edition today but there is a 6 month delivery timescale (minimum) on the Audi!

You'll be glad to know that they crash well too!

I love Alfas , always have done , one day I will have one for a while just for the hell of it .
I was tempted by these and the 159... Went for the 1 series in the end due to delivery times as the guiletta thing had only just come out.
Trying to convice my Kerry to think about getting one but she doesn't like the Punto aspect of it. You be lucky to get the mpg too lol

Wow! Gorgeous.
What colour will you go for?
Profondo blue - a metallic dark blue with a hint of purple/black.
Wanted a dark colour to offset the wheels/mirrors/chrome trim, don't want black as already got two black cars which are a right PITA to keep clean.
Just found a pic of one:-

I had one of these Alfasud Sprint Veloce.......never has any car I've owned since come close.http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/attachments/picture-room/89032d1200169303-alfasud-pictures-sprint_veloce.jpg
Dealer phoned to say that he has manged to find the exact car I want in the UK, so I don't have to wait 12 weeks for a factory order.
Order placed, will pick up first week in March on the new plate :smt040
You won't get anywhere near the mileage they claim mate. My 1 series - which I do like quite a lot incidentally - is meant to average over 60 (I think 64) mpg. I'm currently running at 42.8.
I can't believe you were seriously contemplating a Qashqai. I question your taste sometimes mate.

yea but you do know how they test MPG dont you?
Q: How is the fuel consumption test conducted.
A: The test is outlined in Directive 93/116/EC and provides results that are more representative of actual average on-road fuel consumption than previous tests. There are two parts: an urban and an extra-urban cycle. The cars tested have to be run-in and must have been driven for at least 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometres) before testing.
Urban Cycle:
The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20oC to 30oC on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31mph (50km/h), average speed 12mph (19km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4km).
Extra-Urban Cycle:
This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km).
Combined Fuel Consumption Figure:
The combined figure presented is for the urban and extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part.

Qashqai seemed to be about the best I could get for my budget (at the time) - now that the price of the QQ has gone up, I had another look and decided I would go for something I WANTED rather than just what I could afford
I know I won't get near the quoted MPG figures, but anything will be better than the low 20s I got with the Impreza ;)
decided I would go for something I WANTED rather than just what I could afford
Damn right too... you only live once.
Life has been better after I stopped being tight and decided to buy what I wanted instead of just building up a nice savings stash.
Enjoy
Shame about the alloys. Not one of the nicest alfa's but its still quite good looking.

Ohhh me likey lots! Been looking at these for myself if I was top change. the snow this winter made me re-evaluate the X-trail and decided to keep it.
Stunning car Matt, will be most interested to know how it behaves in real life.
I used to have a 156 V6, that was a proper Alfa, 2.5 V6. MPG in single figures were the norm on a "spirited run" none of your tree hugging diesel nonsence.

Which is why I have just got rid of the Impreza - it is not about saving the planet and hugging trees, just trying to save money ;)

But you can buy an old 156 for about £1500, that gives you about £18,000 to spend on petrol and you'll be having much more fun.
Well maybe, I don't know what the Julie drives like.

I would love a go in the GTV , must find a dealer with one and go and yank their chain a bit :)
The current spider is the only pretty Alfa. The rest are pig ugly.
Give me a GTV6 or a 70's Spider anyday
I love Alfas , always have done , one day I will have one for a while just for the hell of it .
I'm determined to never own an Alfa for as long as I may live, purely to prove you can be a true petrolhead and never own one.
Nice styling, but abysmal build quality

Hardly abysmal..!? Not up to Audi, BMW standards, but it's not overly shabby. Still better than French cars.

Picked it up Friday, had a good run up to Quiff's and back for the weekend, had a play over the Cat & Fiddle. Averaged 61.5 mpg on the way back, which is bloody brilliant (my scooby used to get 20 - 25mpg!)

Tbh their website sums everything up.
I thought, I can't see the picture, but by the sounds of it, must be nice from all the comments. Was on the page for a grand total of 1 minute before clicking back broke the website and now I can't get on anything.
5 minutes later - Hissy fit over I'm back in. Hope the car won't be this tempermental :p

I was doing 70-80mph all the way back, so I was not exactly going slow!
Even with a blat over the Cat & Fiddle on Saturday I still average over 53 mpg :smt080

I'm going to take my car back to BMW. My MPG is truly shocking. My old A4 was better and the engine in that was originally in Fred Flintstone's car.

Dodgy taste in colours Matt! But those are Truly Scrumptious! Me want, no can have on company scheme :( (I can have the 1.6 diesel if I was a very good boy!)
Does it shift in 140bhp form? Can you fit a bike in the back of it?
I have got a rack that will go on the back, or will just stick the bike in the back - the boot is hooooge. 140bhp is more than enough to still have a bit of fun, just flick it in to Dynamic mode and the throttle response/brakes/torque are all tweaked for added giggles.
The 170 diesel bloody flies but I couldn't really justify the extra £30 a month for it

my friends mum just had one picked it up tuesday and in true alfa style went back to garage 48hours later for brakes not working(due to wiring) and oil leak (not sure) and smoke from engine bay ....
but she still wants the car !!!! haha good luck and it is still a beautiful car !
