View Full Version : Why are "Walkers" miserable gits

An odd question but,
Why do people who enjoy walking in the country side hate any kind of vehicle that makes a noise.
I often ride my bike around Rivington (Bolton) and the amount of times I find wakers pointing their fingers / waving in an attempt me to slow down, there was an incident last week where an old guy give some rude hand gestures at me as i opened it up coming out of a bend, bearing in mind its a 60mph road and i was doing around 40-45 (in-fact on this stretch id struggle to hit 60mph).
Another example is jetski's and powerboats being banned from lake Windermere due to the noise, this was due to walkers moaning about the noise from the engines which made the council enforce a low speed limit on the lake (effectively banning powered boats).
Any thoughts on this?

Well it does detract from pleasent atmosphere some what, no excuse for hand gestures though. I find walkers very pleasent when walking :D
As for the lakes, they should keep the rest quiet and lift the limit on windermere the main tourist trap
husky03
08-02-11, 08:46 AM
probably because their peace and quiet is often ruined by folk like us with race cans and no baffels are giving it plenty of wrist twist-that and the fact that they are often on the road itself.
As for windemere-its a place of natural beauty, with great wildlife, its a pain if you go their to relax and see the wildlife when an idiot on a jet ski zooms bye at stupid speed-but in saying that there should be a place for jetskis and powerboats-hold on there is, its called the North sea.

I understand that walkers want to enjoy the countryside, but so do I, just in a different way.
Why do walkers think they should have the priority?
Why would someone on a jetski be an idiot?

The principal problem with rivvy is that there is no separation between walker and rider. You come round a bend cranked over at even 40mph and the walker assumes you are out of control and blasting. We know this is not the case, but they will take the moral highground and act like pillocks.
It is our countryside as much as theirs. These are public highways and if taxed, insured and licensed there is no reason why we should not enjoy them it as much as the walkers enjoy it.
As for the stupid speed limit in the lakes, it ruined the place for water sport enthusiasts. Killed a whole sector of the tourist industry

It certainly did kill of a lot of trade, in fact a lot of local business owners that originally helped to get the ban in place are now fighting to get it removed, The group we ski in has 4 skis and a master-craft boat but the party of people is about 30+, yep thats 30+ people that need food and drink, as well as car parking and fuel. Daft **** business owners, serves then right that their trade is now down
And anyone who has issue with jet-skiers please don't generalise us, yes there are nobs that go and buy a 500quid ski from ebay and then screw it around rivers and the sea 10 foot away from the coast line and swimmers, The same could be said for bikers, you get a minority of scroats that ride scooters around like they are toys and driving over pavements etc
However the majority of jetskiers are sensible and take it serious, I have an RYA certification for personal water crafts and we also have fully comp insurance as well as all the safety gear.

A loud can is an essential safety feature, it tells the brain dead to get out the road in advance you you having to do a stoppy because they cannot associate the sound of an approaching bike with the requirement of said bike to use a section of road.

Why would someone on a jetski be an idiot?
In my experience mate the people i've had the misfortune of meeting on jetskis have been total plebs who think that they own the piece of water there on and have the divine right to go where they want at what ever speed they want-mind you to be honest I have always been fishing while doing so-you sound as if your part of an organised group but up here its the chav drug dealers who have money who seem to enjoy ripping up the water and giving everyone else the finger.

What i don't understand is there is a place like Rivington which is for everyone to enjoy,
In fact before I got into bikes i would go there on a nice day an enjoy watching / photographing the bikes.
But why do walkers think it belongs to them, why do people with vehicles always seem to come 2nd

IMO, the way Windermere had the lake set up was fine as it was, low speed limits by the populated areas, then no limits everywhere else.
I took my boat up there at busy times, water skiers, sailing boats etc seemed fine to me, loads of room, people being sensible and not getting too close to each other.
I'd love a jetbike btw, I'd also rather use it in fresh water not salt water.

Thats the thing with nob head jetskiers, they are he only ones the general public see, us lot go a lot further out / down river. That said the noise must still annoy people trying to fish but sadly thats life, it would be impossible for us to find a bit of water that someone doesn't fish
Trust me decent skiers hate the guts of the "ebay skiers" While trying to launch our skis we have to put up with ***** screwing it at 50 mph just feet away from the launching area, 18 months (new years day) ago we had to drag a young lad out of the water who came off his 500quid ski. It was -6 (water was 0.5 degrees) and he had a shorty style summer wetsuit on, 30 seconds and he went into major shock.

A lot of them are selfish and think the world revolves around them.
That said, when were green laning, we make an effort to be civil to people we come across as it breaks down barriers.
The same things happens in parks with people walking, walking their dogs, mt bikers etc, I went to a local park recently and the amount of people walking their dogs off the leads was unreal, I think that is more anti social than me on my mtb, in fairness though, a lot did call their dogs or restrained them as we came past and were pleasant to us so no harm done I suppose.
The ramblers were the fecking ones who won't move out your way, some of them are arrogant.

In regards to fishing, there will always be friction between fishermen and boats etc, they both think they have more rights.
A bloke I used to work with was a right Cnut when he used to get into spats with boat users, so fishers aren't exempt either.

Not all walkers are nokbs, just as not all bikers or jet skiers. As for the ones that are, don't waste your time on them. They probably won't change, and confrontation just makes things worse.
As for dogwalkers, and dogs off the lead. Bess is rarely on a lead but will come back and sit next to me if shouted. Just like nokbs walking/biking/jetsking you'll get idiots anywhere you go - best not raise your blood pressure worrying about it.

'Ramblers' for the correct term. Miserable, because they all have 'beige' lives.
I know someone close, who got with a lady of a rather colourful reputation....so we thought, she converted him to rambling, he was into mountain biking, had rather a penchant for loud motosickles too before he started going out with her.
Hes now very beige, hardly rides a motorcycle....and she pretty much dresses him like a beige Les Battersby.
BEIGE miserable gits. Although it is nice to have a peacful walk in the countryside, with the dog, but even he gets looked at in a mean manner when he runs upto them and puts his muddy feet all over their beige trousers:smt040

Although it isn't all of the walkers round here, it does seem to be the majority of them but not all of then, I had a rather good chat with an old guy the last week up rivvy, he was saying he had had bikes for 40+ years, his favourite was a "Honda Dream". Nice chap he was too, he had to stop riding due to a heart condition to he took to walking to keep fit.
I understand that people want peace and quite sometimes however if i wanted to walk and get away for noise, I wouldn't walk on a pavement that is joined to a 60mph road and then complain about vehicle noise

Stop moaning.
Nothing wrong with Jetskiing, and people whinging used to REALLY p1ss me off. We started a club to avoid this years ago.

I think the point he is making is regarding idiots on skies not decent skiers
as I have said p1sses me of a lot, I can see why people get annoyed with them dicking around, but on the flip side its only an annoyance to passers but imagine how I feel, I have a 5 grand ski sat in the water with family / friends on it while some brainless chavs screw it around 5 feet away, this isn't just annoying very dangerous.
I remember last year (while working in photography sales) I got chatting to a customer who wanted a water proof camera to take pictures of his catch while fishing, I them asked him where he fished and he replied the River Lune, I happened to mention that I often ski up there, he then went to rant on about how I spoil his sport and then stormed off.
What gives him the right to think he owns the river and that ONLY his sport/hobby can take place on it?
Chavs on the water don't last long from experience. If your at sea, the coastgaurd usually puts them in their place. You get chav speedboaters as well.
As for your fisher, that shows he's not a very clued up one..
When we ski'd on the lakes, the fisherman loved us. It disturbed the lakebed, throwing up mud, making their floats hard to spot, hence they always caught more fish when we were about.

You lot have to remember that for the OP the north sea is not an option, the Irish sea is far nearer and that is filthy. Whether it be nuclear waste or human waste, it is not a sea it is a dumping ground. Also used for the dumping of chemical and traditional munitions etc.
You could probably walk past Blackpool on the floaters.

I thought this was a rant against me!
My Dad is a walker. He also rides a motorbike and fancies abit of green laning. We got flagged down on ride by walkers once who started berating me becuase they felt the road was too narrow for motorbikes (not sure of the logic), then my Dad walks up, takes of his lid and turns out he knows them.
Amusing sheepish apologies follow and my Dad points out a nice footpath that they will enjoy and keep them away from 'noisy, scary, horrible motorcycles'. A good day.

Walkers are miserable gits because;
a) they wear kagools and subconsciously they know they look sad
b) they are sad
c) they envy bikers because we look sexy and tough
d) we are sexy and tough
e) their partners are ugly (except DavyF's Dads) and the kagools make them sweaty and grumpy
f ) another 200 reasons but I have work to do now.

I'm inclined to turn round, stop and ask the tw4ts to translate their gestures into words to my face. It's very rare they do, and even then it's very sheepishly and apolologetically. I then point out the error of their ways and quite forcibly tell them to STFU before leaving quietly and gently

Oooh look, another "I'm a biker, all other road users hate me, life's unfair" thread.
Strange really isn't it, bikers hate walkers, horses, cars, cyclists, HGVs, because no-one else is considerate to us. Go on a horse forum, and you'll find it's everyone other than horse riders that should be banned from the road, on a cycling forum all traffic should be banned, well, you get the idea don't you....
Perhaps if the minority of each of these groups that are so short tempered became a little more tolerant to everyone else, then the rest of us would have a far more pleasant life sharing the roads with everyone else who uses them.
There are lots of horses, cyclists, walkers and caravans around where I live, and with narrow roads that aretwisty and unlit at night, passing can sometimes be pain. So just chill and enjoy a moment to enjoy the views, sometimes life can be better taken that little bit slower.

We do walk in the woods and hills buster, but unfortunately sometimes we also have to walk on the roads, not by choice but by necessity. it's not illegal so why do so many cage and bike riders think they have the right to blast past at silly speeds instead of slowing down, trying to clean their machines on our trousers. All that is called for is a bit of common sense and courtesy, sadly lacking in some cases. I also get stupidity whle on our pony as well but that's another story. Hikers and Bikers have in fact a common enemy, we should unite against the Farmers. Those straw sucking, fat, red faced, manure spreading, over subsidized bumpkins who spread muck over the racing line and work to keep others of their "private land", with unsightly stone walls, overcomplicated gates and *****ly hedgerows, should be made to open up their fields to bikers and hikers and give us back our countryside. Ed loves caravans....
Yep, I have one parked outside the house:lol:
But we've sold it, just waiting for its new owner to collect, as he has noplace to park it and so wants to wait until the weather is a bit better and he can stick it on a site up at Abersoch. And I can't wait to see it gone so I can dig up the hard stand and plant some veggies:D

Perhaps you ought to stop posting if you can't post anything decent.
Daryl.
For every wazzock doing a million miles an hour with their knee down there's another equal (but far more dull) wazzock giving himself a coronary because you went past at a safe distance and a safe speed and he's just basically a c*nt.
I've had abuse from walker types, funny enough they were really polite in person, also from horsey idiots who seem to think that coasting past on the f***ing verge on the other side of the road at 800rpm in 6th gear isn't doing enough for them.
I don't give a f*ck if their walking dogfood is skittish with traffic, they should keep it under control or stay in a bloody field until they learn to ride it.
Tell you what that gives me an idea.
What is it with the more "green" the pastime the bigger c*nt it seems to attract?
What's wrong with these people? You do your best to stop your pastime interfering with theirs, and they do their best to interfere in every possible way at great personal inconvenience and danger.*
*Yes it is dangerous to jump out in front of motorbikes doing 45mph. It's also dangerous to try and lecture the riders of such machines after nearly causing accidents as such things may occasion repeated blows to the squishy bits attached to the face.

I go through the lanes when it's a nice sunny day sometimes, and one day there was an old guy, flat cap and all, making a gesture at me on the side of the road.
He was a farmer, standing by his field, waving a cheerful hello on a nice day! I waved back. Awwww.

Reading this thread has had me in fits of laughter!
I know the arguements with this, around Kielder bike get hacky looks once you go north of the visitor centre. For the record kielder to Carter Bar heading north is biking country in good weather
must just be a south of the border thing as every hiker, walker or rambler i have come across have been nice people. what gets my goat is those feckin Tour de France gits who ride 3 abreast and take up all the road and wonder why people dont like them. dont get me wrong i'm all for people going out cycling but those asswipes take the biscuit. what kind of mentality does it take when your cycling on a busy road 3 abreast and holding traffic up and think your dong nothing wrong.
ooohhh wait a minute you said Bolton. that explains it, its in Yorkshire everyone's a miserable git down there.
runs and hides.

You can run, but you cannot.......
.......hang on. I suppose you already have hidden. Damn you canny Scots.
We don't stand a chance of finding him, even with clues, if he thinks Bolton is in Yorkshire...
Despite that slight, he has a point though... coming across the pelaton isn't the nicest thing when you're enjoying a nice stretch of derestricted B road. They really don't like it when you're forced into the gaps between them either.
If you go to the Peak District in summer, you can be 10 miles from the nearest road... but you still sadly hear the constant drone of traffic, with every 5 seconds the scream of an IL4.
In reality that is pretty sad... so if your a die hard country bumpkin trying to find peace and quite then you can see why they may be miserable.
