We seem to get a couple of these every once in a while when everything comes together and lots of people turn up. A few of us have already booked with more to finalise plans...
Thought i'd post in here to get more of a buzz. Mix of abilities, many different bikes, but importantly loads of people to chat to between sessions.
Great circuit, fairly central in the UK (ish), so why not head down and pop your TD cherry or show the rest of us up if you're a veteran.
Hottrax even told us we'd get a free spot if ten of us sign up from here...
What more could you want. :)

I'm keen to give my 70-200 f2.8 IS L series a go (that's a lens - not a motorcycle) so I must get along to a track day to take some pics soon.

Hellooo would you recommend to a new rider? Which track are you thinking?
Yeah sure, why not. Its going to be my first proper track day. Come along! Its Silverstone circuit.
Hellooo would you recommend to a new rider? Which track are you thinking?
We're all the Arena GP circuit of Silverstone. Have a look on Youtube for some Novice session there. It'll give you an idea.
It's a great circuit, lovely and wide with plenty of run offs should you need them. Nice pit complex to wind down in after too...
Hellooo would you recommend to a new rider? Which track are you thinking?
I did Silverstone as my second ever trackday last March, just after the new track was completed, in the ****ing rain and still loved it.
Took a vid of some of the day also - although you probably want to watch dry weather vids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXwGfJLZDpc
Silverstone was my first trackday ever on the old gp layout. It's good for a novice as it's plenty spread out and wide, easy to pass etc.
It can also be a bit random as the lines are so varied due to it being so wide.
Defo good for a first trackday though.

I'd love to do this, and also would be a newbie. But it's the weekend before the Pre-AR (shropshire) and just don't think i can stretch the bank or work to more time off. If theres going to be another organised later in the year i'd be more than intrested in taking my new kwak round for ago??? p.s. stay away from RavingDavids, stupid crashing novices! Cheers Matt.

Silverstone is a great track for all levels, you'll have a great day I'm sure. Can't make this one (anyone want to pop over to Cartagena in March is welcome, FE 11-13th!) but interested in any others people might arrange.
Looking at Brands GP (GP is a bargain at £165) in May with Hottrax and Snetterton June, got to do the new circuit!
I'm out guys. doing CSS Level 2 at Silverstone in august now, courtesy of my lovely girlfriend :D

I nearly did the same until I found I was lapping Anglesey faster on my SV than a CSS instructor on his CBR6.

yeah but i'm sh*t! Learned a lot on Level 1, I actually wanted to do level 3 as it sounds just what i'm after but the *******s won't let you til you've done level 2 :p

Come to Silverstone as well or instead of. Flymo will teach you who to roll for a small nominal fee of your choosing. Bargain!
Haha does Flymo know you're offering out his services at low low prices? :) if the gf hadnt already got me the voucher i'd be taking him up on that
I would but I want to try Anglesey and get back to Cadwell at some point, thats as well as mallory and snetterton which im already signed up for in june. I'm skating on thin ice with her as is I think

Are you going to be taking tyre warmers and all that jazz Flymo?
Are you going to be taking tyre warmers and all that jazz Flymo?
Of course :-), tyre warmers wont be any big benefit if you are kept hanging around in a holding area before going on track though but always worth having them in the van with me. I'll bring wets etc just in case, and a big box of spares.

So i'm going to have a mare keeping up with you in the first couple of laps then.
With regards tyres, i shall be checking the forecast before hand and fit either Supercorsas or Avon Storms. That's how cool i am. ;)

It's the only other tyre i have ATM. And they'll undoubtedly be better than the SuperCorsas.
You coming down at all again Phil?

Nah, lets just take it easy and have fun. To be honest tyre warmers are little use on a track day for a track the size of Silverstone. One decent lap will have your tyres warm, maybe even half a lap if you give it some.
Very unlikely they'll get used.
Serious word of caution though, I've lost count how many people I've seen crash on the first two laps of a practice session or race. You really really need to back off on the first couple of miles to give the tyres time to heat up.

Yeah maybe, wanna do a few this year, i wanna do mallory again to try the new surface :)
New mallory surface is reportedly slippery as fook in the wet.
I might grab an instructor...never bothered before but I might learn something.

2.45 lap give or take for me so around nine laps.
On the new arena circuit i was struggling to break the three minute mark, then had some laps with an instructor and within a session or two got down to the mid 2.40's. I'd definitely recommend an instructor Taz.

Binky - how did the instruction work? Do you just follow someone, or did they follow you and tell you what to do/what not to do afterwards?!?
I've never given it much thought, normally just go out and do my own thing.

I've never given it much thought, normally just go out and do my own thing.
You get pretty much a full session. They will lead the way and show you the lines, then wave you past and look at anything you are particularly worried about.
Body position, braking, lines etc... After the session you'll get a little debrief with some casual advice that will normally help your riding no end. It's a good punt with nothing to lose. :)

Probably not into inters Binkmeister. Would go into Novice but if it's like a normal track day instead of what it was like last year I will ask to be put up.
Daz I am open minded at the minute. Tempted by a CBR600 Steelie (nice and cheap) circa 1997ish.
Or any 600 IL4 SRAD ZX R6 etc.
But could be tempted by a zx7/9, SRAD 750 or an old Fireblade.
Was even looking at a really nice trackified SV650 curvy.
Probably leaning toward getting something that has already been made into a track bike as you normally see some uprated suspension, spares and various other extras flung in which helps a lot. And they are generally cheaper than road going bikes.
Scanning ebay daily :)

Having never been to a track - what's the easiest way to test how loud my bike is?
I dont think its too loud but I'd rather not risk it if you know what I mean!
What's your exhaust? Is it considered road legal?
hongman
02-03-11, 01:59 PM
Its a Viper can, with no markings except the Viper logo.
Doesn'y say Not For Road Use, but conversely doesn't have any E or BS marks!
If Nobbylads stubby can passed the 102db test @ oulton i'm sure you'll be fine. His is LOUD

Did you have your can on when there was that rideout a few months back? Didn't notice it as being particularly loud. To fail silverstone you need to be mega loud. Folk have racebikes and seem to get on alright.

Mines a knackered stubby that has only been rivaled for noise by one or two bikes. It's the screamy IL4's that get troubled by noise tests.
You should easilly be able to get by, i'd put money on it. :)

Anyone know how the instruction works for Novice's?
It says "Novice Instructors will be identified by an
armband and/or coloured bib. Each Novice Instructor
can, if required, provide 1 to 1 instruction FOC –
please see your Instructor on the day.
Supplementary instruction sessions are available for
£25 per session for all groups."
1-1 FOC - really?? So then what is the supplementary sessions?
Being a proper noob at this, can I go on and do my own thing in the Novice group? I.E Ride my own lines, speed, style etc. I really have no clue!
Assuming laps are not timed or anything - its not a race correct?
Will I have my trousers pulled down and spanked if I'm too slow :D

Sounds like they'll have 1 session out on the track with you foc, where the instructor will follow you to see how your riding is, then go infront so you can follow their lines. Then come in and have a chat with you in the pits. If you want more sessions like that then I think thats when the £25 comes in. 2bh theres going to be plenty of experienced orgers there you can get advice from too. I'm signing up for flymo instruction ;)
Main thing to remember is you're there to have fun, not break any land speed records! Do your own thing, don't worry about holding people up. if theyre faster than you theyll come past especially at Silverstone with it being so wide. What bugs most people on track is the guy holding you up through the corner and then once he sees a straight hes off  usually involves doing them on the brakes them feckers
DEFINITELY not a race, if you get caught timing laps you'll get a bollocking. Which is why its handy to have a lap timer as standard on your bike. Not that I ever use it :-dd

its surprising really, its reasonably kind to the noise level meter but sounds much louder to the ear. Mine regularly tests at 102/103dB on the calibrated meters at race meets. Well within ACU test limits.

All noobs, except one guy who knew what he was doing. Didn't bin it and had a great day. Wasn't too busy in each group either.
Well organised by MSV events

Get there for eight ish. Sign on is normally 08.00 onwards i think. Briefing just before nine with Advance group heading out at 9.
I'll be on a ratty little Curvy. We should try and grab one or two of the end garages near the pit entrance as the ones near the exit are grabbed early by the racers from about 7...
You'll no doubt find some SV's which will inevitably lead you to more and then the main group. Failing that look out for a dashingly hansome, six foot something ginger guy. (Moi) I'll be there for about half seven onwards...

Yeah, i've spoken to them this time Chris. They have apologised for your inconvenience last time and kindly changed the format of every other track day they've organised here in order to make it less busy for you. :smt101
Less bikes to pass you i suppose.
Cheers for having a word :)
You ****

How much do those photos normally cost?
No need to tape up lights etc do I, just turn up, do db test and ready to go right?
