Of SV's
Not only will I have Custard, my trusty 1999 650 lovely yellow curvy, but we have another joining the family. I haven't thought of a name yet but will :)
Welcome to my SV1000s, slightly the worst for wear, but roadworthy, T&T till September. I pick her up next Saturday. Happy Days

Lol. Bought it privately. I was only looking to see what sort of money they were going for & found this on the SV Portal. The guy is still using it as his daily transport so have had to wait 3 weeks before I could pick it up. He has bought a car now, so doesnt need the bike. Seeing as the Triumph has given me so much grief over the past 6 months I am thinking of putting it up for sale (now I've got all of the problems sorted). & it is going through my head to put Custard on track seeing as I've sold my FZR.
My son told me not to as I would sit & cry the 1st time I came off.... He has got a point :)
andrewsmith
20-02-11, 11:32 AM
Your son right you'd cry if you binned custard. Buy a cheap as chips one to track and build off that.
How much you get for you FZR then?

As captain of the shinydownpipeclub, and indeed chairmen of the sub comittee of the yellow SV shiny downpipe, I shall have to make recommendations to eject you from the board, if you even contemplate putting Custard on the track.....
i cannot beleive you got the thou for £750! flabbergasted comes to mind but i suppose that is a big dent in the tank and rather rusty......still tho, SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY BLOODY QUID!

Sold the Fizzer for £500. It was as sound as a pound, ran like a sewing machine & never let me down. The bodywork wasn't up to much, but the rest of the bike was goodo :)

I wouldn't give my black SV away for that...maybe about a grand!
I knows its only cosmetic, and a bit of handy work will make it right again, but even the repair costs wouldn't depreciate it to such a rock bottom price.
I think Mister C is a master dandy highwayman, perhaps he needs to borrow my **** Turpin cloak and pistol! I thought I got a bargain when I got my Leo Vince pipes...but a whole 750 quid fer a SV1000.....!!!

The bloke rang me yesterday & said that everything is ok for Saturday, so I'm leaving bright & early (about 6am) for the 3 hour journey into the back of beyond.
He didn't instil me with much confidence when he said "When you get to Masham? give me a call & I'll come & find you".

Total bargain - but then SV1000s are cheap now - I only want £1500 for mine and it has 22k on it, twin Leo Vince cans and a K&N, PCIII all mapped properly, braided lines, R6 throttle and is the nicer blue colour - cheap performance :)

Hawkwind? Nah, I was more of a Stranglers & Clash man meself lol.
Havent ridden it yet, but, it looks like I've bought a bargain. Needs a front tyre & some cosmetics, but I dont think that the bloke had washed it since he bought it in 2007. I have used 4 buckets of wash & wax. a toothbrush & a full can of wd40 & she has cleaned up fairly well. We have a steam cleaner at work, so will give her some serious cleaning this week
All that is left now is to give her a go :)

No, nothing at all. No oil leaks, nothing out of place :) The bloke hadn't checked the oil for a while, it's taken about half a litre, got no smoke or any rattles when the engine is running. Keeping my fingers well & truly crossed
Bargain for sure there Mister C :)
I hope so, just need to start putting some miles on & see if anything rears its ugly head

Well, just taken it for a quick run. The front tyre is well shot at, so the handling is, should we say, decidedly iffy :)
It also has a bit of a misfire at low revs, which I'm thinking could be due to the rear downpipe woofing a bit. I will have a look at why it's blowing tomorrow night. I dont think that the previous owner did anything with it other than ride it, so I'm hoping it just needs a bit of love.

nah, they just do at 3k, more so around town. My VRap does it, well known little quirk. Paul6th had it on his 1000, I've yet to recall why they do it, not had chance to waddle off to recollect....its summat and nowt, and easily explained and cured, something not set up correctly or in need of adjustment. TPS rings a bell

yea the lag/misfire is common at low revs, you may also hear the crank knock at low revs as this was a problem on k3 thous (but not really a problem if you know what i mean) just a noise, i swear i could hear it sometimes on my thou or was i imagining it?? looks like you got a good bike there col, just abit of a clean up and she'll look grand :) oooh i do prefere the half faired look with the thou belly pan too :) those viper pipes will sound ace! mine with CCC can's sounded like a lancaster bomber lol.
oooh sort ya downpipe out son ;)

Thank you people, thats put my mind at ease. The bloke said that he kept it regularly serviced, I think he lie :)
I will spend some time on it over the weekend, I really want to have a proper ride on it.
That is spot on Kwak. I also have the crank knock, thought it sounded awful when I first rode it. It was as though the timing was just slightly out. Just wouldnt think that these things would happen on newer machines.
I will sort the downpipe out one day :)

on the sv portal site theirs a large amount of reading to do with "the knock" but you'll be glad to know no faliures have ever happened because of it :) enjoy the big thou :)
Mine is a K3 and I sure I have heard "the knock" but not all the time - its one of those things that you read about and then are not sure if you are hearing it or not! As Kwak says - there are no known failures of it.

part worn but not much .. since I have the new set of 2ct's on that cost me £300 in France !!!
ahh well will save me monies when I need to change them over I guess.

Mine use to feel as though it was surging at around 3300rpm when held on a constant throttle - throttle body balance and TPS adjustment sorted it for me.

Rear collector box gasket is a common failure on the thou. Read about it on portal. Changed mine last year and it does make it run rough. Get one here (http://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/Rear_Collector_Box_Seals_%28each%29-ref-15819-8715-1313-36.html) or for a few quid more from Suzuki.

Cheers Ratty. I will get one ordered.
The more I ride it the more problems arise, which I had a feeling it might have done.
Now have an oil leak on the Alternator cover, when I looked the bolts were all loose & they had been for a while looking at the crud around them I have now tightened them but it is still weeping, so think it could be that he's had the cover off, broken the gasket & not bothered replacing it.
Winding the throttle open makes the bike sound really rough & vibrates all over the show, release the throttle & it runs smoothly. I'm wondering if he has had the rear wheel out & not adjusted the chain correctly, or it's drive/sprocket related. I will check it this weekend.
Other than that, it has new cans on & sounds feckin awesome :)

Well, 2 weeks & just over 300 miles in & I thought I would write an update.
I sold the fairing lowers to SV400rob, so the bike has now cost under £700.
Ratty, you were spot on, collector gasket made the bike feel a lot better. My mate owned a motorbike shop & fixed me up with a good front tyre for nothing (cheers Karl:)). I've spent 6 hours today having a mess. Found out that the clutch pushrod has worn slightly & I think that the oil seal is goosed as well, hence the oil leak from the left hand side.
I've also set the TPS, but havent been out to try it yet, that will have to wait until tomorrow.
The previous owner hasn't bothered servicing it for a while, the air filter is a nice grey colour with bits of grass in it. I've given it a clean with an airline for the time being.
Also changed the front brake pads, so will see how she is now. Bit of TLC should do her the world of good.
In conclusion I have to say that it looks like I bought a bargain & after I've spent a bit of money on her should have a nice bike.
