Chain joining link fitting?

Right so im a bit stuck.
Since new year ive taken my SV off the road to take it apart and give it a well deserved clean and general service. So ive got it down to basically the main frame, wiring loom, and front end, the rest is off/out.

I want to get a new chain as my old one is knackered, im aware the sprockets should be fitted at time of new chain aswell, thats no probs. What is the problem is fitting a new chain.
How can i go about doing so without having to spend silly money on a tool to use maybe once or twice to fit a chain?
Im currently asking around friends to see if anyone has one lying around, but if all else fails, im going to need a solution....

three main ways to get around this problem.

1. use a split link and get your local tyre place to fit a soft rivet one.
2. borrow the proper tool
3. centre punch a soft rivet link and use a hammer and something as an anvil to spread the pin head out.

Use an angle grinder to shave off the old link, punch it out with a hammer and punch.
Fit new chain, take a socket 10pm or abouts, and mole grips and gently pull on the new link face. Use a ruler or flat edge to make sure it is square against the adjecent links. Take a hammer and roll over the edges of the link pins. Crude way of doing it but has got me by for years.

You can get a decent tool for about £30 which you'll probably use more than once or twice.
