So, cases were split in the 'other' thread.. time for a close inspection of how the liquid gasket on the crankcase looks close up to see how good the 'factory' did it.

Hmmm, im no expert but it looks 'iffy', theres gaps, the bead looks too thin. Is it supposed to be on the inside of the case?. When the case compresses is the bead supposed to go inside? - i noticed that a bit of the gasket was outside around the split at the sump as well.

Anyways, I used a can spray by carplan called 'get yer gas(kit) off' and silverline gasket removal tools to remove the gasket. I took my time and when i noticed i was trying to scrape a dry bit of gasket i stopped, soaked it with gaskit off, left it for a few minutes and gently scraped it off. Afterwards when it was clean i used some rags soaked with gunk to wipe the edges down and also the gunky rag was used to clean the inside of the covers and cases of residue oil & gasket removal fluid and here's the result...

That looks very, very clean.

Seeing the oil strain cover in the 4th picture does make me wonder. Have you taken this off to see if there is anything under there that shouldn't be?

The strainers been checked mate. clean as a whistle! just like my gasket surfaces! - impressed? - i spent 3 hours cleaning them, bits of gasket baked on. I just tooooooooooook my time. Scared sh*tless in case i scratched the surfaces. Pretty safe to call me the gasket removal expert from now on :)

Cool just wanted to check. When I did mine I though that there wasn't much damage until I looked into the oil strainer, admittedly though I had a slightly different problem...

First picture (before you cleaned gasket face) looks perfectly normal. Most of the small amount of liquid gasket you apply gets squeezed out of the joint creating the small bead of gasket on the inside or outside; but it is not this bead doing the sealing - it is the tiny amount left between the face which fills the machining imperfections.

Bit grotty looking but the 'outside' is pretty flat, should i concentrate more on the areas around the 'inner circle' where the pistons come and meet the valves?

I can't remember if the gasket goes that far in the middle in case it doesnt need it!

Here is the replacement gearbox! - arrived today - how does it look?

Should i use the selector forks and drum from the old one?
