View Full Version : Tail tidy, high level exhaust and indicators - problem?
Im buying a tail tidy for my sv, however im thinking the exhaust might by in the way of the indicator.
Whats your thoughts and is there a way round it if its a problem?
Im buying mini indicaters for the tail tidy.
Thanks

Doesn't look like the indi will fit in there with that big plate. And if it does it will be a bit hidden by the can.
Stubby the can or get an undertray with built-in indi's :D

Most of which are illegal due to the requirement for a certain minimum spacing of indicators...

have a ^ shaped bracket coming from the tail tidy to bottom of numberplate (behind out of sight) and mount the indies at the bottom left and right of the plate
Sorry to hijack the thread but does this mean indicators built in the rear light are illigal?

Yep they are - as well as usually useless to the person behind you.
Most of them are not very bright and the colouration in certain light conditions can make the brake light and indicator look very similar.
From the VOSA pdf (http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MSVA%202010%20.pdf)
Front indicator
Amber
2 max
Min height 350mm
Max height 1200mm
Min distance apart 240mm
Rear indicator
Amber
2 or 4 max
Height as front
Min distance apart 180mm
Max 300mm from rear

On that logic indies on mirrors are illegal (over 1200mm high).
Also mine must be illegal as I've 4 front indicators, 2 on the mirrors and 2 side repeaters.
As for the OP, EDIT: just seen the side view pic you posted. You'd be better off measureing it first cos yes, its going to be bloody close.

Standard or flushed into the fairing.
If flushed into the fairing, then there is no limit side facing repeaters :p

Just a bit of clarification here. They need to flash amber, not be amber, correct? Many vehicles come with clear lenses and amber bulbs nowadays.

Yeah they're flush mounted, Initailly I just got them in prefernce to blanking plates but on fitting the mirror indys I noticed its actually quite hard to see them from the side so having side flush mounted ones as well has worked out as a massive benifit.

I believe the ruling is in respect to the light emitted/seen rather than the lenses/bulbs thing
Ah i see, looks like im gonna have to change the exhaust then!
Any ideas how much the exhaust is worth? Its immaculate.
Thanks

You could just change the link pipe so that the exhaust is not high level.

and then give me the link pipe and hanger bar :D

Or just swap your link pipe with barwels ^^^^^^^^^^^^
Ah i never thought of that, could i make it so its slightly lower? Or is it one or the other?

If you find a place that makes custom exhausts for cars, that has an extruder machine and a mandrel bender, you could get any link pipe you like made up.
I went to see these guys in Northampton about a link pipe for my XT600 http://www.longlife.co.uk/ they couldn't help me because my XT exhaust was only 1 3/4" pipe, and they didn't have tooling that small for their pipe extruder, but for an SV pipe it would have been no problem.
Thanks ralph thats definatly something to look into! I have just had a look at the bike and reckon i have move it slightly manually but will have to try when the tail tidy comes!
It best be here soon im excited haha.

I have the same problom. Indy sits on top of can. I'm goin to make a tail tidy bracket that lifts the indicators up away from the canhttp://184.72.239.143/mu/2ed04dc3-1def-bd09.jpg

May just try that, looks good. Easier for idiots in cars to see as well.

Cheerz for the reply. The GSXR i just bought has built in indis, didnt even think as to the legality as they were so widely avaliable but did doubt its effectiveness in comparison to seperate blinkers. Will have to get some fitted pronto! Thanks once again.

if you do it properly you can have a very high level can, the original tail end, without the snow plough and a set of standard indicators that fit properly(for a curvy at least) A LA

yes its in my for sale thread, but it illustrates it can be done well, without anything being illegal
keep the plough and become a mamber of S.P.A.S. Snow Plough Appreciation Society.

Dizzy they are possibly the worst photos to demonstrate the point you were trying to make! You can't even see the Indies or snow plough ;)

Well I can see a standard indicator as large as life in the first picture and a reg plate peeping out on the second, with a bicycle reflector hanging off the bottom:p
Now, there is no snow plough, but the original undertrap has been used, then a bracket fashioned to hold a full sized plate. If I can be arsed I'll take a photo from the ass end too.....might be a while:rolleyes:

I'm looking on my phone, so it must be that! Can just see the end of the can and a smidge of orange.
standard indicator's and big plate's just don't work with a tail tidy imo

As MrMessy asked me to photograph me rear, I thought I'd share. Bearing in mind that there used to be a bit more gap between the plate and the indicator, but the cans been moved....you can get a fag packet between them now, and no, it isn't scorched or anything. Hope it helps someone. I have no idea how it was done as I bought the bike like it, but it involves some sort of metal bracket, the original reg light, and the undertray.

worked fine on my sv and with a high level can too.
Also works well with the legal side of things when it comes to roadside checks too.
The first thing that tends to get noticed is the smaller plate, then the take a closer look at the can etc....
