It's pants off-road!

Cue embarrassed calls to the recovery company who were coming to get the car out of the field opposite where I was mired!
Then more embarrassed calls from the recovery truck man when his winch broke. It's a heavy beasty this Disco!
Then embarrassed explanations to the Sergeant (the car is the Boss's car - he isn't in at the moment - promise no to tell, please!)
So. Clarkson says it'll go to the top of a mountain. PAH! It'll not make it out of a muddy field!

To put the vehicle fleet in perspective, we are loosing 20% of out vehicles.
Traffic cars used to be changed at around 80,000 miles. We now have a situation where most of our cars are over 100,000 and some of the motorway jeeps are approaching 200,000!
I heard two lads having to slow down whilst en-route to serious RTC's and attend at normal road speed 'cos the emergency equipment packed in.

Surely thats because motors are seen to be less stressed on motorway miles:confused:

hey my mates chelsea tractor, which is a rather new Land rover of some super duper description, was pulling lorries up our road in the snow before xmas because it was the only vehicle managing to get up it that could tow them:smt104 Thems BIG lorries!

Probably not the case with Traffic cars. They'll have a fairly hard life. But they are serviced regularly

The motors aren't the problem, it's everything else. The steering and suspension get loose and lazy, the switches and interior get knackered and fail on a regular basis.
The X5's seem to be lasting well, better than the Mercedes ML's we used to use.
The engines get ragged senseless, max rate acceleration off the hard shoulder, full speed runs around the motorways, towing huge vehicles, often without wheels. It al takes it's toll.
Even the Vectra VXR's are all very tired now. The 330's are superb, very fast and handle well, but the cuts mean they will be here for a long time.

Take any off road vehicle with road tyres through something like that and you've got to expect it to get stuck surely...it's all about the tyres......reminds me I need to ditch the Dunlop 220's on my bike...
Diff lock on, and reverse out? Set to mud and ruts?If it got that far in, should get out.
...and just HOW did you get it that far in?

There's no "Diff lock" it's all electric. And I did have it on "Off Road Ride Height" and the diff was set in "Muddy ruts".
It's just the tyres.
It's a shame we are getting them really. It all came about when some bosses saw an X5 unable to manoeuvre in the heavy snow at traffic HQ last year. They decided Disco's were the way forward. Slow, bad handling, and with bling road wheels that are u/s in the rough.

Should have gone for Freelanders instead, less lardy, and they don't get stuck.:p

I'm on a Tiger, not a BMW GS!

Yeah it should have electronic diff lock.(not sure on d4 but most d 3 did)
Had ap go with d3 off road on road types and it managed ok, but a set of all terrain would help a lot.
Do you guys not get off any off road training from the land rover experience centres?
I know my d2 would have got out of there.
SIII refers to the series 3 land rover I trial.

Pegs just told me Bruces Landy is a Disco4, the one that pulls trucks up the hill in snow.
I fink its Petes driving that got it stuck:p

Doesnt look like it has f'all ground clearance though. I reckon our cacky £700 Maverick probably has more.
As the others have said, it'll be the road tyres that have got that stuck...

Hate to say it, but Bp MUST try harder - there's no mud up the doors!
Could be worse as his other ( 2 ) wheels would have had our intrepid hero eating mud pie. ;)

Wish I'd kept that motor, but high insurance decreed it had to go.
