...and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight...
Well, this Friday is the day, as a few people already know I resigned from work last September with the intention of getting a job as crew on yachts...
Now it's all happening, at the end of the week I board the one way flight to Nice and jump in feet first...
So, I'm sure you'll all miss me (:smt043), likely I won't be around as much on here but will be on Facebook if I'm near an unsecured WiFi connection...
Feel free to leave your advice, eulogies, mournful wailing and abuse below...
Catch ya later...
very jelous - all the best hope it all goes well:smt023

Funny you should mention that, if I get a permenant position (ie: Med for the summer, Ft Lauderdale and the Caribbean for the winter) I may well be looking for someone to borrow or buy her
Only requirements are that I know you well enough and you have a suitably large inside leg measurement...;)

Well the seat is 37" off the ground, the top is square and 8-10" wide...
My inseam is 33" (urang-utan genes) and it's manageable once you get used to it, more a state of mind than any physical limitation, just watch out for dropped drain covers...;)
kaivalagi: My old boss has already said I'm welcome back if it doesn't work out, but tbh I want to work on the water, it's what I love to do. Still, I have four years experience at survey engineering that could apply to several jobs if things truly go pear shaped, but I can't see me coming back for any great length of time, I've always been a nomadic type, always looking for the next thing...

I left the UK for Halifax, Nova Scotia with a dummy return ticket and planned as I went, no round the world ticket, just adventure and going on your gut instinct a lot....I highly recommend it and it sounds like that's more or less what you're aiming for

I sat on one at the KTM dealership, I have a 30" inside leg on a good day and can get most of my feet down...just not the heel :) The seat is quite narrow so that helps...same deal with the SMT...just a b1tch to get your leg over (I'm old and knackered though)
Hey, I can ride it, and I'm 5'7''!!! And I'll look after it really well, promise.

Was it an "S" model?
S model has 2" extra suspension travel
And the Renazco seat on mine also adds an inch
And it's wider and flatter than the stocker
Even with the lowered gel seat on it I can't flat foot the S...

Do it now before other thing stop you doing it.
My old bosses daughter does this, last time I saw him she'd ended up in New Zealand as crew
But she'd done Transatlantic deliveries and also crewed on one of the Turkish flotilla in the summer.
Plenty of Kiwi's & Auusie's doing this as well.
If you've got wanderlust, I don't think you'll cure it, just circumstances stop you.
I've been to some fabulous places by boat and got paid to do it, all my current projects are landbased, and restricted by work & children

Arrr, nothing is ever straight forward! It was the standard Adventure model...not the "R" which has a 3" taller seat! You have an R then?
I assume an "S" model is the same as the "R"? Never heard of the S before?

In 2009 the S model became the R, unless they changed it this year it's still 2" taller than he standard one...

Mis-read it, only looked at the whole number, closer to 2" than 3" :)
860 mm (33.86") versus 915 mm (36.02")
Yeah I think I could manage the standard model but that extra 2" might be too much.....I think Reeder would have difficulty on either bike though

Looking for a permanent position at the bottom, intend to have some fun and sail around a bit to see where it takes me in terms of extending it into a career, I've signed up to a bunch of agencies in Antibes but tbh I'm not expecting much - they'll have hundreds of new crew on their books...
Dream job would be on a big sailing yacht, something like Red Dragon or the Maltese Falcon, something very graceful about the really big sail boats.
But the reality is if there's work going I'll be taking it...

Go for it. I wish I'd had the guts to break the mould and do something completely different. And now, well past 40, I look back and think 'I wish'.
Well done you.
You're going to have a blast Mark. I spent 6 months in the Canaries when I was in my early/mid twenties and it was one of the best times.

Mainly keeping the exterior of the boat looking perfect, and that really is perfect, 24/7. Handling the fenders/lines when docking, monitoring the engines/electrical and water systems on board and helping out inside when the interior crewmember is busy in the galley
And no, the uniform isn't white, it's navy. If you're lucky I might even upload a photo...;)

Wow - it's been a while since I've been on the org, this isn't a job, it's a lifestyle...
So let's see, since I last posted I've fallen in love, resigned, got a new job, sailed nearly a thousand nautical miles between France, Italy, Corsica, Elba, Sardinia and the surrounding islands and I'm pretty much not going to slow down until October...
Will probably be selling the car and bike, getting something a bit more pillion friendly (ZZ-R1400 anybody?) and moving semi-permanently to the south of France...
That's about it, but here's a few photos from facebook to make everybody jealous...

Which night are you in the barrel?
Nice one, takes ball to change your lifestyle on that scale.
I know a person that now captains very large sailing vessel all over the world for it's owner, and the owner is only on it a couple of months of the year. I have a colleague that now works on yachts that charter at £250k a week... The tip for workers is normally 10% of the charter per week which is spread out evenly between all the crew.
It's a good life if it's for you. I would love to do it if I wasn't so settled, just working a week outside the UK every other week is hard enough on my partner.
