Tell me about it, seriously big earthquake....some of those scenes are just scary!

I just got off the phone with relatives in Fiji making sure they're ready for the tsunami that's heading thier way...we're still trying to warn some of the guys in more rural areas next to the sea though, it's late in the evening there and the area will be hit around 3am....not the best timing!

created a FRICKIN whirlpool!!!

hope your relatives will be safe mate, the tsunami warning has gone to new zealand, hawaii, canade, russia, US west coast and i would imagine pretty much all the pacific islands.

Scariest pictures I've seen since the 9/11 attacks.:|

The images of the water crossing the fields was the most upsetting, cars & boats in the debries, who knows how many folk were caught out in their cars or houses :(

Bad isn't it. There's parts of the video where you can see cars driving about probably desperately trying to get away. Must be horrific! They're pretty much definite gonners.

AAAHHHH GODZIWA!! haha, but in all seriousness, this is awfull, although the earthquake was smaller than thailand in 2004, that tsunami look 10x more powerfull and destructive. And the worry witht he nuclear reactors!!!! well that is a real worry.

lets hope that the tsunami manages to get a lot weaker before it hits anyone else!

Tell me about it, I'm bricking for my Fijian relatives...3pm or thereabouts our time I'll know the score...I am hoping that they will be spared being on a north-east coastline and south-east from Japan but there's no knowing for sure

Thanks guys, I am sure they'll be okay, just not knowing for certain is the problem...

These guys go out into open sea in a 16ft fibreglass boat riding the crests of waves on days when I would think twice about going to sea in things a lot lot bigger, they're a hardy bunch to say the least :)

Still can't get hold of my "cousin brother" who lives at sea level though, carp mobile signal there at the best of times. No doubt he knows it's on it's way and is busy securing things in the village and getting his wife and kids safe...The "coconut wireless" will no doubt have got word to everyone by now anyway

edit: half a metre high tsunami wave at the northern pacific islands...fingers crossed it remains that low...travelling at 500mph though apparently so that much energy could mean anything!
edit2: arrival times for locations listed here: http://www.weather.gov/ptwc/text.php?id=pacific.2011.03.11.123017

A cubic metre of water weighs 1 ton, multiply that up by the amount of water and the speed in which the tsunami travels and it really is something you dont want to be in the way of.

kaivalagi
12-03-11, 11:21 PM
Yeah, I've stopping watching the news now...it's just all too much tbh

The sobering thought is that the death toll being quoted is likely to be very unrealistic and that a considerable amount of those missing people could well be gone. There was no warning for the population when the earthquake struck and 10 minutes after that there was a wall of water coming inland sweeping up all those homes.....

My mum was chatting with a Japanese women playing online bingo of all things, the lady was scared for her children and couldn't sleep...they're still having serious tremors there all the time (see here, over 100 more quakes in the area since the big one (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html)) and there is still a real threat although you would hope the chance of 8+ on the scale is near nil...

All this makes you realise how fortunate we are living in this part of the world really where this sort of thing is unheard of

Friend's daughter was on a cruise ship missing off the NE coast of Japan. Just back from visiting and have seen at first hand the grief and shock.:(

Japan suffered an 8.3 shock a number of years back, and the death toll was 143,000. The one on Friday was 8.9, and had the Tsunami too. I dread to think what the final toll for this one will be.:(

Am following this nuclear business with interest. It just gets worse and worse. After FIL's awful experiences at the hands of the Japanese at the end of WW2 I have tried to avoid Japanese stuff - yes I bought a SV and a Hornet - but this shows how silly all that is - they are people, cut them they bleed, just like us - and they need help.

Sorry to have picked up on it and made something of it too really, I should have let it go as it's obvious you don't have an issue and were just making that point of others....The important thing is we are all no doubt deeply sorry for what has and is going on in Japan and whatever is said it wont change that!

Remember that devastation in Haiti? Funny as not much of the world seems to. Could it be due to the contribution that Haiti makes to the world economy,(practically zilch) or the fact that...heavens above....the majority of the people are black, that largely their plight has been forgotten.

China, traditionally Japan's biggest foe, has been one of the first to offer massive aid. Because you know, those economical wheels cant keep turning without our Japanese friends playing their crucial role.

I know what you're trying to say and agree 100% those australian floods were eye opening as it seemed to be the first natural disaster in my adult life which made me appechiate just how fragile our existance is even in the developed world.
But this by comparrison makes the aussie floods look like a burst water main, truely jaw dropping footage.

Watching stuff like this makes me feel so sympathetic to those caught in it, I cannot begin to imagine how one must feel to turn a corner whilst trying to escape only to realise its a dead end, quite literally for someof the most unfortunates. Regardless of thier nations past I wouldnt wish that fate on anybody otherwise Im no better of a person than those who carried out the atrocoties.

As for the rest, well Meh to that.

Its very unlikely that we will destroy the Earth.

We may make it uninhabitable for large mammals, but the planet wont even notice and it will all start over again.

What good does it do anyone to highlight the parrallels between this NATURAL disaster and that of a manmade one 60+years ago, the first pic is actually quite good and valid due to the monument still standing amoungst the rubble but ffs the others are just tenous at best, no difference between teh otehr images and any other quake around the world.

Scary, especially the part about wind reaching tokyo in hours from the site....I had a feeling the Japanese authorities were down playing the whole thing, I really really feel for the people there, it's just one life threatening thing after another it seems :(

Cost effectiveness will be the reason for the plants and where they are, a blinkered money driven decision in hind sight. But who's to say if they had placed the plants on the western coastline for example that it would have been viable or made a difference anyway, sods law and all that....bit too late now anyway though aye....

I keep using the word "scary" a lot but all of this really is isn't it...

No doubt all of us think that there might be 1 or 2 or several after shocks from something like this but if you look at the after shock count it's enormous from this one...

I posted further back the too where I counted more than 200 tremors for approx a day after the main biggy, so it is obviously settling if you can call 6 on the scale settled!
