I've arranged to drive quite a distance tomorrow to go check out this car:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2003-HONDA-STREAM-2-0i-SE-SPORT-7-Seat-REDUCED-/300531971238?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item45f919f4a6

Mileage is reported as 57000 in the ad, and the photos don't look to contradict that. I've just done an HPI check through the AA website and it suggest the mileage was 221000 in Jul-2007 :( Also a cat-D, but I'm less concerned about that.

The report says:

National Mileage Register

The mileage reading you have entered is inconsistent with other data currently held on the National Mileage register.

Mileages as recorded by the National Mileage Register

Date recorded Recorded by Mileage reading Total
20-Jul-2007 DVLA 221,000 221,000

So are these often wrong? Is it still worth driving to check it out, or don't bother?

Thing is the car looks far to tidy to have covered (presumably) a quarter million miles or more by now- and I'm thinking 221000 miles in it's first 4 years of life is an awful lot (55250/yr, 4600/month).

sounds like a NRM entry fault

check the MOT's and 221k the car would most likley be shagged and like you say the pics dont seem to show that?

Thanks guys. I've sent him a text (don't like ringing too late) to ask for the MOT/V5 info I need to complete the MOT history check.
