View Full Version : busted elbow
so just out of hospital. while in bruges in belgium i tripped over a low wall, fell almost 2 meters onto stone step and rolled down into canal. elbow took impact and dislocated as well as shattered. they did what they could with the metal and screws but too many small pieces to make a good job. my nikon dslr and iphone both got trashed but i am lucky to be alive as the water was chest deep and i can not swim. bike will be in for sale section in next couple weeks along with bits and pieces. wont be able to ride for a very long time if ever and will need an auto car now. if it was a clean break all would be different but unfortunatly it is a mess.
be warned... night photography is dangerous!

Just a thought, might be worth enquiring about a claim there, Walls have to be a minimum height when they are drops the other side.

Maybe not in other countries though...thought it was only us that did what Brussels told us to?
That sucks, I hope you recover well...and quickly. Right at the beginning of riding weather too. Tut.
Oh that's horrible. Hope you heal well, TC3.
well thanks for all the best wishes. when i tripped i was not looking where i was going and was looking at view points along the canal to get a few night time pics.
will scan a pic of the metalwork sometime sunday.
doc says i wont ever have same mobility as before but maybe one day i can ride a more upright position bike so hopefully next year i can get back in saddle.

sorry to hear that:(
My sister did almost the same last week but only tripped over a curb. Broke the radius bone into 8 bits so not enough to plate!! in surgury yesterday to remove the splinters and will only get about 80% movement back in the joint!
And they tell you Bikes are unsafe!!;)

hope she recovers well. i think one of the worst things is knowing you wont ever have normal movement back. they could not completely fix me up due to too many small pieces thatcould not be screwed. oh well could have been worse as some have said.

Don't give up - I shattered my elbow last year into 3 bits and had a bone graft and lots of metal work. Had the plate and all the screws removed in November and I now have full mobility and rode to the AR last August from Essex.
I was lucky, I work at Lord's cricket ground and our cricket physio is a good mate so he gave me physio 4 - 7 times a week which really helped. If you want a second opinion following your surgery then do try and see Steve Corbett at the shoulder unit of St John and St Elizabeth hospital next to Lord's. I think he also does NHS at St Thomas's. He is widely regarded as one of the best elbow and shoulder specialists going, and treats all the top cricketers, footballers, golfers and rugby players. I can PM his details if you like.

thanks for the offer and really good to hear you made a good recovery. they want me out of the cast after just 9 days as they want i start therapy on it as it should help the small pieces bond in place. i will see how i get on with the physio on the 28th.

ouch indeed mate, hope the pain stops soon,
my dad did the same many years ago and the removed the ball from the end of the arm and it healed quite well has nearly all the movement back.

I had my cast removed after 10 days, got squashed on a tube train, ripped the plate out of the bone and had to have the whole op done again - so try and avoid doing that!
See if they can give you an arm brace - it realy helps with getting the movement back. They cost around £600 so a lot of docs won't pay for it - and Bupa certainly won't under most policies but my lovely surgeon sneaked me one from his personal collection. I think getting him cricket tickets helped - he likes me!
It's cumbersome and looks a bit odd but worked.

Jeez, only read the first post but that's seriously bad luck. Elbows are really tricky and I totally understand what this could mean...but... GWS and don't sell the bike!

I've PM'd you my surgeon's contact details.
Here's my xray from last July. That involved a bone graft to glue together the big bits and he removed the smaller bits that couldn't be screwed back on. I have a big old scar but almost full movement. I ride the SV no problem. Even all the bumps and gravelly roads round Thailand on the ER6 this month were no problem yet the first surgeon I saw gave me much the same long term prognosis that you've been given: limited movement and no biking. So I saw someone different and made it quite clear that if Rossi could be back racing in 6 weeks he'd better get me ready for the AR that August (this was in April). And I got to Wales.
