HA my weekend was rediculous to be honest,

Saturday - Took 4 hours to get to Manchester due to crazyness in the Peak District covered in another thread . The reason for going was because I was unhappy with a watch purchase of significant value, the nearest Watches of Switzerland to me is in Manchester, I originally bought it in Edinburg which added to complications. The watch is fully mechanical (as watches should be, no battery) and was loosing 1 minute a day. Some top end mechanical swiss watches are certified by COSC to be with +6-4 a day, so mine was way out and was ****ing me off. I took it back to get a refund and ended up spending more than a new SV on another watch (I'm a sucker for watches :( )

Sunday - Got involved with this lot...

watches are my weakness. i wish i had more money to spend on one. biggest regret was not buying one in the States when the dollar was 2 to the £. Had a TAG Monaco in my sweaty hands, was a tad over $2000 IIRC, only woulda set my back £1,000 :( gosh darn it

You see that's not actually the case. There are expensive watches that are specifically designed for the military, Navy etc... they are almost indestructible. One of the watches I just bought is for naval/sailing/diving use. It can withstand the pressure of 1000m and the chronograph will still function because of its unique design, the strap would have to break in 4 places before it would come apart but you would struggle to break one part, the list goes on. I think you either enjoy/get watches, or not though. At the end of the day your average person on the street can't tell the difference between a cheap watch or an expensive watch unless they really know their watches, it's about personal enjoyment and appreciation of a quality time piece. A fully mechanical watch with a couple of complication is a masterpiece that can take 1000's of man hours to put together.

I irritated the neighbours. They like the garden exactly as it has been for the last 40 years, ie huge shrubs and ivy everywhere., as it means that their dog can't jump over the fence. We don't, so we cut down all the ivy on our side the front fence, chopped our side of a bay tree that copped it in the frost, and started digging the front garden, which is now home to some hollyhocks, paeonies, bearded irises, and a giant scabious:flower::flower::flower::flower:

A stockbroker I know has a thing for watches, he went to London especially to buy a specific watch. A Romain Jerome Titanic DNA watch. Was kind of controversial when the guy started making them as he uses part of the actual ships hull on the face of the watch.

I was in the "a watch is a watch" camp until I saw this bad boy =P~

My father left me his gold Omega watch. It's a classic 1950s wind up thing with a gold buckle too. And you know what? I hate it. No, I detest it. I absolutely can't bear the sight of the thing. I don't wear it, it lives in a drawer and if I catch sight of it I shudder. I want to give it to my nephew as part of a 21st prezzie (next year), after all he's father's grandson - but whether he would want it is another matter. The watch itself is handsome (like me:cool:) but it's the memories I have that makes it so unwelcome in my house.

I'd love a new Omega, but £££££......

Yeah, they are quite 'unique'. If I was going to drop £10k+ I can of quite a few alternatives.

Watches are certainly addictive though, constantly thinking about what to get next etc. A top quality swiss watch that's serviced properly is a bloody good investment, a new SV will be worth 50% in a couple of years time, a good watch will be worth pretty much exactly the same or more if it's special or a ltd edition/ limited numbers.

...the front garden, which is now home to some hollyhocks, paeonies, bearded irises, and a giant scabious...

...as of this evening, add to that some catmint - we brought a big clump from the old house and have split it into 8 plants - the cats made a beeline for it and rolled in it:lol: lambs tongue, redbill geranium, sea holly, gas ring plant (it's called wild cornflower really but the flowers look just like a burning gas ring) again broken up into many smaller ones, and delphiniums. Pile more to go in yet:cool: but it got too dark to see what I was doing:(

Oh yeah, I've also planted up 4 bags of first early potatoes, and tomorrow morning at 5.30am ( I wake up at 5 every day without fail) I'll plant up the large pots that used to contain all the catmint etc with some more spuds. So in June when you are all paying £5+/kg for Jersey Royals, I'll be enjoying my own Shropshire Duke of Yorks for free:cool: I think the bag of seed potatoes was 87p from Trago Mills in Falmouth:D

I need to start 'The Horticultural Thread':D

As for the unofficial subjct of this thread.
I can't wear watches, or be near mechanical clocks.
The quit working if I am near them for any length of time.
Cheap watches will only run a few hours on my arm.

Strangely my Dad had a nice watch that quit working the day he died. (he did not have it on)
I put it on a few months later and it instantly began to run.
However it only lasted me wearing it 6 or 7 times before it stopped for good.

Just wondering??? Anyone else like this????

A good watch is likely to be mechanical, with a power reserve in the spring of around 24hrs. If you the wear it the the watch 'may' start working again but you would normally need to wind it.

That would explain your situation.
