The last couple of days I realised that my Dog , Titch , was not going to get better and the quality of life she was heading for was not becoming to my brave pup . I got her from a rescue home a long long time ago and she has been my one true companion when all others were not around . A little Dog has brought a big man down in a big way . I carried her into the vets and stayed with her until it was over ...... in truth , whilst in the car , I wanted to drive us both off a cliff as that would have been easier to do . I never realised how much I loved my Dog until today . Her passing has affected many people , if I was out with you lot she used to stay with my mum and dad and always came back with something resembling Peppercorn Sauce on her whiskers ....... sauce that was smothering a steak or two . People have rang me all day in tears on the phone .... a little Dog with a huge personality that I am proud to have had for a quarter of my life . Sleep well my little Soldier

Sorry to hear this mate, looks like a lovely dog, they are not just pets but family, I'm sure you did the right thing, rather than letting her suffer.

I'm very very sorry to hear of the passing of your friend.

A loss such as this has affected me too in the past, so I have a tiny insight into how you now feel. That you are sad shows your strength of character and your ability to care.

Goodbye Titch.

Mate, I`m so sorry. Too many dont realise the bond, the loyalty and the love that we both give to and receive from our dogs. I lost a job once because I couldnt turn in for work because our family hound had gone. I know the feeling. In my case I went to a rescue centre the next day because our home just wasnt right without a dog and got another. For me, that was the best thing I did.

Take care mate.

Having had and suffered the pain myself I know exactly what you mean Badg. Putting it into context I cried more when my last dog Harvey died more than when my Dad died.

There will be more tears ahead my friend, but it will get better of course, remember the little lad with big smiles. Have fun with Harvey Titch, dont let him roll in fox's poo tho, it ruddy stinks!

Cromarty cat died a couple of weeks ago after I'd had him ten years and I'm still incredibly upset about it. I have his little urn containing his ashes on my bedside table.

The house felt so empty without him that I went up the the cat shelter 2 days later and picked out two new cats (or maybe they chose me) who are now driving me up the wall as they are quite young and seem to think 4am is an acceptable time to turbo launch themselves up and down the stairs while yowling their heads off.

They will never replace Cromarty, but they are helping me get over him in time. When one of them stole some chicken off my plater after dinner the other night I found myself saying to him in a stern voice 'Cromarty was never so ill mannered young puss, and if you want to fit in around here must learn to behave'.

So why not go along to the shelter this weekend and see if another dog connects with you who you could offer a home to as it sounds like your pets are as spoilt as mine. The new pup won't be a replacement for Titch, but it will give you a focus and there are so many dogs and cats needing good homes.

Spooky, just started reading this and getting moist eyed when Bess walked in, came over and stuffed her wet nose into my hand for a stroke. She's now laid with her head on my feet. She always knows when I'm sad and always comes over.

Really feel for you matey.

Best wishes, Bri

Really sorry to hear that mate, she looks like a great dog, it is always a hard choice to make, but unfortuantly i talk from experiance, it is not worth letting them keep going and end life in pain.

Such sad news and a brave decision to make. As per facebook "The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of its master" RIP Titch x

Aww Badger, as I said on FB I am thinking of you. I would hate to imagine not hearing the rattle of Samsons collar, this has put a tear in my eye xxx.

You have my mobile number, text anytime if you need a friend, you know I work silly hours so if I am up I will always reply.

Awww, so sad.

We currently have six dogs and I have already, obviously over a number of years lost 6 and it is without a doubt one of the most gut wrenching and painful things when one of the goes. I grew up alongside a black Lab that mum took in off the streets, the owner came forward and told her to keep him and told us his age.

We knew he wasn't quite a year old...I was a few months old. He was the most faithful pet and loved me to bits....we were both 16 when my dad had to make that horrible decision and I am crying just thinking about it. It is the only time I have seen my dad cry.

Take comfort in the fact that you gave her a good life and that you showed her the love she deserved. *hugs* xxx

RIP Titch, go and play with Ghillie, Meg, Jake, Max, Jan and Rudi.

I kept it together today in work , even talked proudly about her , I drove home feeling sad . Even women were looking at me in Tescos and gave me that look that they know I am in pain ..... I got home and there was no welcome home .... just an empty basket , then the snivelling started again .

Thanks for your comments folks , I never knew a Dog could get to me like this .

Claire`s quote has cemented exactly my feelings and another friend (well ... ex really) said "You saved that Dog twice , once when you got her from the rescue centre and the act you carried out today for her" ...... those are 2 quotes that help a lot and I thank you for them , and equally , the kind words from you guys on here . Gonna chip-off now as the pile of snot rags needs ushering into a skip .

Mate, I'm so sorry to hear about this.

I don't know what to say but chin up Badg, when you get sad just remember the times when Titch would come over to you for a cuddle as I'm sure happened.

Or possibly when you were out for a walk and had a sit on some grass to have Titch next to you under your arm for a bit of attention.

Sorry to hear your loss, having lost a dog that meant the world to me I know how you feel.

Here is a link to a poem that helped me come to terms with the empty space they leave.

http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html

We adopted a dog, which while never replacing him, helped heal the wounds.
